Sint Maarten/St. Martin: A Tale of Two Countries

This island, divided between the Dutch and the French, is the world's smallest island divided by two countries.

Interestingly, the English left their mark on the island, and English is the most common language. The official language for St. Martin is French, and Dutch and English share that position in Sint Maarten. Other frequently heard language on the island are Spanish, French patois (a mixture of French & African languages), and Papiamento (most widely spoken in Aruba, Bonaire, & Curacao.

Due to a high rate of immigration, St. Maarten has become a melting pot for cultures of over 70 different nationalities.

Cruise ships generally dock in Philipsburg on St. Maarten, with the shore excursions taking place on both the Dutch and French areas.

This lens is one of a series that the author is providing on over twenty cruise destinations in the Caribbean. Each lens will include general information on the destination, suggested shore excursions, and video and photographic illustrations where appropriate.

Map of Saint-Martin/Sint-Maarten

Saint Martin is a tropical island in the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km (186 miles) east of Puerto Rico. The 87 km2 island is divided roughly in half between France (53 km2) and the Netherlands Antilles (34 km2); it is the smallest inhabited sea island divided between two nations. The southern Dutch half comprises the Eilandgebied Sint Maarten (Island area of St. Martin) and is part of the Netherlands Antilles. The northern French half comprises the Collectivité de Saint-Martin (Collectivity of St. Martin) and is an overseas collectivity of France.

On January 1, 2006 the population of the entire island was 72,892 inhabitants, 37,629 of whom lived on the Dutch side, and 35,263 on the French side.

Collectively, the two territories are known as "St-Martin/St Maarten". Sometimes SXM, the IATA identifier for Princess Juliana International Airport (the island's main airport), is used to refer to the island.

Culture of Saint Martin

The culture of St. Martin owes a great deal to its African, French, British, and Dutch heritage. Although St. Martin is a single island, it contains two separate nations: Saint Martin, a French overseas collectivity; and Sint Maarten, part of the Netherlands Antilles. Although each side's culture is influenced by their respective homelands, they share enough similar heritage and traditions that it can be difficult to tell where Saint Martin ends and Sint Maarten begins.

The native Creole population can trace most of their roots to Africa, France, Netherlands and the British Isles. Only some stones remain from the ruins of the two forts built by the Spanish occupation in its early take over. But during the colonial period, the British settlers and several military dominations left their idiom as the main language spoken on the island, also this make a large impact on St. Martin's culture.

Nowadays, due to a major influx of immigrants searching for better employment and living conditions, over the past twenty years the number of Creoles has been surpassed by the number of immigrants. Today, the island's population of 69,000 is truly a melting pot of people from 70 or more different countries.

With so many different nationalities present, quite a few languages are spoken, English being the most common one. However, the official languages are French for Saint Martin, with Dutch and English being official for Sint Maarten. Other common languages include French patois (a dialect mixing French with African and other influences), Spanish, and Papiamento (a language from Aruba, Bonaire, & Curaçao).Culture of St. Maarten. In French Saint Martin, the most popular religion is Roman Catholicism. Dutch Sint Maarten favors Protestant denominations, particularly Methodism. The island also has small Jewish and Seventh-day Adventist communities.

Perhaps in part due to French influences, the whole island is known for its excellent cuisine. Creole, French, and West Indian cooking are particularly renowned. Chefs trained in Europe elevate restaurant cuisine to gourmet level. Of course, with the diverse nationalities, plenty of international fare is cooked up.

Popular music on St. Martin includes a variety of styles beloved throughout the Caribbean. Calypso, merengue, soca, zouk, and reggae all contribute to the festive culture.

SNUBA at one site in approximately 12-20 feet of water and enjoy snorkeling "the old fashioned way" at the other two sites; all sites are situated along the beautiful southern coast and will be chosen on the day of your tour to ensure the best conditions. Enjoy, as this excursion is fun for the whole family, from the young to the young at heart!

Once past Marigot, the pace relaxes on the undulating highway and through the charming town of Grand Case, distinctive for its Creole architecture and culinary reviews. Take a break at the beach and enjoy a refreshing swim or just relax on the sand. After approximately one hour at the beach, you'll drive through the countryside back to The Village. Spend a few minutes shopping here and enjoy a complimentary beverage before boarding the bus for the transfer back to the pier.
