St. Patrick's Day Coloring Pages and Crafts

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day coloring pages and crafts help children understand this holiday.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated March 17 each year to honor Saint Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland. Legend says that Saint Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland, but that is not literally true. The reference more than likely refers to him driving away the pagan beliefs of the Irish people. The snake or serpent was worshiped by Pagans. Therefore, the legend of the snakes is considered to be symbolic, not actually true.

It is believed that Saint Patrick died on March 17 so that is why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on that day. Since the St. Patrick's holiday started in Ireland, on this holiday all things Irish are celebrated like shamrocks, being lucky, and the colors green and gold.

It is traditional to wear green on St. Patrick's Day, to eat Irish food like corned beef and cabbage, and for children to celebrate with St. Patrick's Day crafts like coloring pages and other crafts.

Sing an Irish Song

Sing an Irish song with the kids (and the cats)Kids love to sing so check out these fun songs: "Danny Boy," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," and "Cockles and Mussels". You probably know at least one of these tunes so belt out a tune with the wee ones in your life.

Make sure to be age appropriate by singing only the chorus with very young children. For older kids, provide the words so they can sing along. Let the kids stand and stretch and dance to blow off some steam before hunkering down to do more St. Patrick's Day crafting.

St. Patrick's Day Memory Game

Let the children make the game pieces.

Happy St. Patrick's DayMost children enjoy playing memory. This remembering game involves a stack of game pieces or cards in pairs. For instance, there might be two cards with the same image of a red ball or two cards with the same fish. For this version, the kids make the cards then everyone can play.

Ahead of time, cut index cards in half. On the blank side, draw or trace images related to St. Patrick's Day. Start with the following images and others as you like:

- pot of gold
- rainbow
- leprechaun
- top hat
- shamrock (three-leaf clover)
- four-leaf clover
- toadstool
- the words "Happy St. Patrick's Day"

Remember to make two of each card.

At the party, let the children color the cards. Then play St. Patrick's Day memory game.

RULES: Flip all of the cards over so the lined side is showing and the pictures are facing the table. Arrange the cards in rows.

Each child takes a turn where they flip over two cards. If they match, they keep the cards and get to go again. If the cards do not match, it is the next child's turn. The trick is to remember where the cards are.
