Banners, Streamers, and Flags for St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day flags, banners, and streamers are a great way to show your 'Irish colors'. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be used several different ways.
St. Patrick's Day Flags - mostly used outside. You can show your 'Irish colors' with these flags to celebrate the holiday, or they can be the "X" that marks the party spot. They usually come in 2 basic sizes; small garden flags, (usually about 12" x 18"), and larger pole flags, (usually approx. 33" x 42", or as large as 3' x 5'). But outside isn't the only place you can use them. The smaller garden flags look great as wall hanging decor' and the larger flags can also hang flat on the wall and be the anchor for your St. Patrick's Day room decorations.
- 12" x 18" Garden flags - Using ground-stake flag holders, these can be placed in any landscape bed, by your walkway entrance, or in a flower or shrub bed by your front door. They also make 'mini-pole holders that attach to a lamp post, outside wall, or porch column. They even make suction-cup holders that can be placed on windows or any smooth exterior or interior surface.

Banners and St. Patrick's Day Decorations
When they step in the front door, what do you want them to see

Banner and streamer St. Patrick's Day decorations and party supplies can be used several ways in your party decoration plans. Primarily they are used at the entrance of the party room to announce its location, but they can also be used on walls as part of a decorations wall grouping. You can also creatively use them on some of your St. Patrick's Day Party tables. St. Patrick's Day garland can also be used as 'swags', just like you would use Christmas garland.
- Party room entrances - 'Happy St. Patrick's Day' banners can be placed over the door or archway leading to the party room to announce to your guests that they are in the right place. You can use a flat banner, or you can use streamers that spell out 'Happy St. Patrick's Day' in a 'swag-type'
- Party Room wall decor' - Banners can be more than just signs on the wall. They can used used as part of a wall decor' grouping, over or under other decor' pieces, almost like the header or footer of a letter frames the body of a letter.
- Party Tables - Banners and streamers can also be used on your party tables. A flat banner can be used on the table top the same as you would use any other table runner, and streamer-type banners can be attached to the edges of non-sit-down tables, like snack or hors d' oeuvres tables.

Tip: Use 'Poster Squares' to attach your banners. They are double-sided sticky foam adhesive squares that will hold firmly but remove easily without harming surfaces or leaving any residue. They are available at almost any store that has a school or office supply section.

Shamrocks and Wall Decor' Pieces
Shamrocks. Leprechauns, and Pot-O'-Gold cut-outs will make your wall decor' as 'Irish' as you want it.
St. Patrick's Day decorations cut-outs, (flat pieces, usually paper or stiff fiber-board), can be used almost anywhere to carry your party theme. Use them on your walls, individually, or in groups, or on your party tables. They even make 'clings' for windows and nirrors!
Using the theme pieces; shamrocks, Leprechauns, and Pots-O'-Gold you can place a decor' piece here and there, or pick-and-choose pieces to put tohether to create a grouping of St. Patrick's Day decorations.
For instance:
- A piece here and there - Use a large shamrock on one wall, and maybe a pot-O'-gold on another wall. Or one at one end of a snack table, and the other at the opposite end. Or maybe just a rainbow with a pot-O'-gold over the entrance to the room. If you have multiple party tables, you could use different large cut-outs on the wall above the table, (or on the table itself), to call attention to the tables or designate them as 'stations' for whatever you are putting on them.
- Wall groupings - If you have the wall space, this is a popular choice that allows you to show your creativity. Use a large central item like a flag, or a large shamrock or pot-o-gold cut-out, as the focal point, and them add smaller associated cut-outs to complete your creation. An appropriately sized banner, or piece of swag garland can even be added over or under your grouping.
- Hanging pieces - Most of the St. Patrick's Day decorations cut-outs are two-sided, so you could also hang them from things like; cieling fans, doorways, lamps, and mantles. Just get some shamrock green, or gold ribbon and hang them wherever you want.
(ps. there are also several spiral hanging decorations availble too!)
These packages of decoration items will give you an idea of what is available, and maybe trigger a decorating idea too!
Tip:
Uhmm ... It's just an opinion, but you may consider something like the picture at right a little too busy for anything but a kid's St. Patrick's Day party. So when you are creating your wall grouping, give careful consideration to the pieces you need to use, and when you have the look you want, stop, and just use any leftover decorations somewhere else in the room.

- Larger Shamrock (and others too), cutouts - as mentioned above, larger cut-outs work well as focal points in your room, either as thenter of a grouping, or alone. Here are some more examples you could use for your decorating ideas.

Balloons for Your St. Patrick's Day Party
Use Balloons to add color, depth, and dimension to your St. patrick's Day Decorations
It is almost universal - balloons mean celebrations and parties! And you can use balloons to accent your St. Patrick's Day decorations, fill those spots that just don't work well with flat decorations, and add color to the overall look of your decorations.
Of course balloons serve their purpose when used singularly, but they look much more impressive when used as groupings - 3 or more tied together - at strategic locations. And even better - try to find balloons that match the decor' theme of your other St. Patrick's Day decorations and party supplies.
Here are some ideas for balloon groupings:
At the entrance or in corners
- Set the tone as soon as your guests see the entrance, frame the entrance to your party with a balloon bouquet on one, or both sides. Room corners would use just one bouquet. If you are using these from the floor, they should be approx. eye-level. If you have an entrance table, (like for name tags or favors), the balloons should be just above head level, approx. 6' above floor level.
- Groupings of 3 - 6 balloons usually look best, but that can be adjusted based on your idea of what would look best with the rest of your decor. Just make sure the size of your balloon bouquet doesn't overwhelm their location.
On your party tables
- at a sit-down table the balloons can be used as a table centerpiece and should be approx. 30" above the table-top so they don't interfere with the guests seeing each other across the table. If it is not a sit-down table, the balloons should be just above eye-level of a standing guest - approx. 36" 42" above the table-top. You could put a bouquet at each end of the table, as a centerpiece, or both.
Tips:
• You need helium to use balloon bouquets. Small party-size balloon helium tanks are available at most party supply stores, and department stores that have party supply sections.
• Use ribbons to attach your balloons. If possible - using the Irish colors of green, white, and gold - try to use ribbons that match your balloon colors.
• Your balloon bouquets look best using anchor weights, but they can also be tied to table legs if appropriate. You can buy weights to anchor your balloons, or make your own since they are so easy make. Just put some weight in some baggies - coins, sand, marbles, stones, sugar - and tie your ribbons around the baggies. Then wrap the baggie with some gift-wrap foil or tissue paper. Tie the wrap ends together with another piece of ribbon.
• To get a multi-level bouquet, vary your ribbon pieces by approx. 6"

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated to honor Saint Patrick, a missionary credited with converting the Irish to Christianity. It is believed that he was not even Irish. Some say he was born in either Scotland or in Roman Britain. When he was around 60 years old, St. Patrick traveled to Ireland and spread the Christian word. - BlackDog's St. Patrick's Day - History

- St. Patrick is supposed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Certainly, there are no snakes in Ireland. Though the Graeco-Roman writer Solinus had already recorded the fact that Ireland was snake-free a good two hundred years before St. Patrick was born! The story that Patrick banished the snakes seems quite simply to have been invented in the12th century by a Northumbrian monk named Jocelyn, whom the wife of the Norman John De Courcy brought to her husband's court in Downpatrick.
