St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day is a day of celebrating, a day of drinking, eating and wholesome merriment. St Patrick's Day is a day when we don't paint the town red, instead we paint it green!

March 17th is St Patrick's Day, the day to celebrate the life of Ireland's Patron Saint. March 17th was the date that St Patrick died and everyone wants to join in with celebrating his life (Irish or otherwise).

Anyone can celebrate St Patrick's Day and in my experience everyone finds some Irish ancestry (real or imaginary) to fall back on. Let's face it after a few pints of Guinness anyone can sound like they kissed the blarney stone!

This St Patty's Day why don't you let your inner Irish come out to play? A great St Patrick's Day party needs four key ingredients - drink, song, food and laughter.

Drinks

Guinness and Other Irish Drinks

A good supply of Guinness is a must have for any self respecting St Patrick's Day party. Luckily for us canned and bottled Guinness still has nitrogen bubbles in it which allows for the creamy head that Guinness is famous for.

Although Guinness is good no matter what you serve it in you can't go past these hand painted Shamrock glasses will really show your Irish side!

Now to be honest I'm not a huge fan of Guinness personally as I prefer the lighter stout of Kilkenny. My husband, however drinks a Guinness (or two) on St Paddy's Day.

An alternative for some people is to try Guinness in a cocktail.

If you don't want to supply Guinness you could try serving Green beer. You'll need a lager beer and some green food coloring.

Another option is to try a St Patrick's Day cocktail

Party Ice

Don't forget the ice!

Song

Music, Singing & Dancing

Any St Patrick's Day party has to have some good music. It really isn't an Irish party if there's no singing or dancing. Trust me whatever music you choose to play Danny boy will be sung as the evening wears on!

Food

St Patrick's Day Party Food

What do you serve at a St Patrick's Day party? As with any party it depends on what kind of food you want to serve.

Here are some great food ideas for your St Patrick's Day party.

Of course you have to have potatoes on St Patrick's Day! One option is just to have bowls of crisps other options are wedges, fries or jacket potatoes.

I personally like serving jacket potatoes. Pop the potatoes in an oven before the party and then bring them out with a selection of toppings and let your guests serve themselves.

Wedges are great with chopped bacon and cheese both melted on top and then sour cream added. Of course plain fries is a much easier for the host than the wedges. Cook them up and serve them with a side of tomato sauce!

Laughter

Fun & Laughter

St Patrick Says........Be Happy!

Laughter comes with good friends, good food, good music and a few good drinks! A few fun costumes does help add some fun intothe evening.

A fancy dress St Patrick's Day party - yeah baby! Leprechauns galore and everything green you can get it here!

Of course all good hosts need to have a pot of gold on hand. I love the idea of a couple of pots of beads so that any guest that aren't already donning green can have a string or two of beads to wrap around their neck!

If there's not enough laughter you can always start telling jokes! Brush up on a few beforehand courtesy of Poddys!

Remember Be Responsible

Let People Remember YOUR St Patrick's Day Party for the Right Reasons

A responsible host should make sure that they supply some non-alcoholic drinks for the designated drivers among your guests.

Serve Lime cordial or add green food coloring to lemonade for some St Patrick's Day party drinks that won't give you a hangover the next day.

St Patrick's Day Decorations

Going Green

Green is the agreed color for St Patricks Day so make sure you have lots of green balloons on hand. There are certain Irish symbols that are a must have for any St Paddy's Day party and they are shamrocks, leprechauns and a pot of gold.

Shamrocks are a three leaf clover (although very rarely you may find a four leaf clover, these are incredibly lucky) and are a symbol of Ireland

Leprechauns are little male faeries from Irish mythology. They are usually characterized as jolly fellows, but folklore show that they can be very impish! Usually portrayed wearing green they are reputed to be very rich and hide their gold in a pot buried at the end of rainbows.

Pots of gold are where the leprechauns' keep their wealth. I spent many a day in my childhood trying to find the end of a rainbow so that I can see if there really was a pot of gold buried there!
