Staghorn Ferns

In a shady spot in the garden, sometimes down the side of your house, in gentle filtered light , it is nice to have a fernery of sorts, which is where most Staghorn ferns grow best.

In these moist protected conditions, they will grow well and add an attractive yet unusual greenery, softening this out door area.

Coming in many shapes, sizes and foliage, there are different attractive ways in which to display these unusual plants, some grown in pots, on trees and some are mounted on boards and attached to fences and walls.

All giving a special atmosphere to your garden.

Growing Staghorns Inside

Staghorn ferns are found growing in their natural state in rain forests, attaching themselves to trees and fallen timber in the cool and moist conditions of the undergrowth.

They have tufted roots growing from their rhizomes so can be easily separated to create many and be cultivated in our backyards and gardens to add to our collection of growing plants.

We can assimilate the natural conditions and growth pattern, by potting up a rhizome, a young fresh shoot from the main plant, in sphagnum moss and then soil, giving them the shady moist conditions they like to grow in, placing inside in the house in cool light or outside in the shade.

Giving them a good water from time to time and a spay of water on leaves and foliage.

They look fantastic fixed to a wall or planted in a ceramic or glass pot.

Staghorns Ferns Outdoors

You can also grow your Sraghorn Ferns outside in the shade, the position I like best for them as they can grow wild, either mounted on boards and attached to walls or strapped to tree.

Maintaining the same method using sphagnum moss behind the plant in preparation gives them something to grow on to when first starting out, giving them a kick start on their growing adventure.

In time these plants will grow green, thick and lush and you can then gently remove the young to propagate more to add to your collection and give to friends.

Either way you choose to grow your Staghorn is up to you and the conditions and space in your garden.

If you have a fernery or very shading spot for all you other shade loving plants, this location is ideal for Staghorns ferns that are mounted on boards which can to be hang on walls and fences.

They all look wonderful to me where ever they are placed as I love these plants and the more varied the ways are in which they are grown, the merrier.

I think they're unique and different. They catch the eye, and after you really look at them, you see their beauty.

susannaduffy says:

They look so delightfully cool under the shadecloth

I don't really like them, too untidy for me.

Vladi says:

You can't eat 'em and you can't roll around on 'em. What earthly good are they?

Lovely ferns, and completely unlike the ones I have here... I do have a wide shady strip in back of my house, and one of these may just have to find its way in there!
