Stan "the man" Lee! 'Nuff said!

This Lens is dedicated to the "Man" himself. Stan Lee! Dubbed the father of comics, Stan Lee created numerous legendary comic book characters and is now himself a well known celeb, everyday hero and legend of sorts.

Some of the most fantastic and iconic superheroes like old Spidey himself, The Hulk , X-Men (just to name a couple) were co-created with other comic book legends like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko way back in the early 60s inevitably captivited the hearts of comic book readers with unique characters, bold characterization, fresh twists and many agree, uncoventional comic book storytelling for that era.

Stan, Jack, Steve (to name a few) along with Marvel Comics ushered in a whole new era of comic book literature and in the process created some of the most well loved comic book characters in the world. So we who enjoy, doth salute you Stan! You are our hero!

p.s- Hey Mr. Letterman, isn't it about time you had Stan come on your show? Enough Oprah already! ( If Stan has already been on David Letterman please let me know! )

LET'S CHECK OUT STAN'S CREATIONS!

You say you love Stan's superheroes? Check out the Legacy Handbook, (pictured top)and click here to learn more ..

The list is endless. As you know, Stan's created more iconic comic book characters than anyone else on the planet.

We'll take a look at some of Stan's best, wildest and most popular superhero and supervillian creations ever below-

SPIDEY

A character that needs no introduction, Spidey first made his appearence in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962. The picture on the right features cover art by Jack Kirby (penciller) & Steve Ditko (inker).

Co-created by the great artist Steve Ditko, Spidey is Stan's most famous creation. TV shows, cartoons, movies and just about everything that you can think of has starred or featured our famous friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

DAREDEVIL the man without fear!

Daredevil was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett in 1964, with a little help from Jack Kirby. Unique in his own right as a comic book superhero, Daredevil is blind and relies solely on his heightened super senses that he gained after a radioactive accident.

DD is actually Matt Murdock, a successful attorney-at-law.

Armed with a billy club, radar sense and heightened senses, Daredevil is also known as the Man without Fear!

IRON MAN

Starring in his very own live action movie next year, Iron Man appeared in Tales of Suspense, a series devoted to anthology science fiction and supernatural stories.

Co created by scripter Lieber, artist Don Heck- The Golden Avenger first wore a bulky grey suit of armour that's soon replaced by the sleek, more familiar red and gold suit which was revealed later in Tales # 48.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Debuting in Strange Tales # 110- 1963, Doctor Strange is Marvel Universe's leading master of the mystic arts.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Strange was once a surgeon although an arrogant one who suffered neurological damage in an auto accident. Humbled, he later learns the "arts" after meeting the "Ancient One" and becoming his disciple in an unrevealed location the Himalayans.

SILVER SURFER

Another great character that recently appeared in
the latest Fantastic Four movie was also created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.

The Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd) first appears in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966), the first of a three-issue arc fans call "The Galactus Trilogy".

Begining as a herald of the world devouring Galactus, the Silver Surfer surfs the space ways and cosmos- looking for suitable planets for his master to feast on.

Norrin became the Surfer after he had asked that his planet be spared by Galactus- in return, he would serve Galactus by becoming his herald. Galactus accepted and bestowed Norrin with cosmic powers- making him into one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

THE MIGHTY THOR

The Mighty Thor is based on the god of thunder with the same name from the Nordic mythologies. Thor was created by Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby.

"Goldilocks" ( a common reference to Thor with fans ) first appears in Journey into Mystery #83 (Aug. 1962). Unlike the Norse mythology, the Marvel comics version sports a blonde hairdo while the mythology version has red hair.

Why is Thor such a popular character with fans all over the world? Because he's an Asgardian warrior and a god of thunder- not to mention a long haired hammer weilding superhero would be my guess!

Another super hero set to finally make it to the silver screen soon.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK

One of the most popular and easily recognised comic book characters ever, the Hulk is created by legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby- first making an appearance in The Incredible Hulk vol. 1, #1 (May 1962).

Tells the story of a scientist caught in the blast of a gamma bomb that later creates a green skinned, raging monster capable of amazing abilities and feats of strenght.

FANTASTIC FOUR

The first ever family of super heroes debuted in Fantastic Four #1 (Nov. 1961) and was a huge hit immediately with fans.

Unlike the competition during that era, the comic book characters created by Stan seemed more human- (a common trait shared in all of Stan Lee's characters) and like any real family, the FF had realistic problems and issues to constantly deal with- which would explain the phenomenal success of the FF even in those early years.

The Fantastic Four has always been potrayed as a dysfunctional yet loving family.

X - MEN

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first created our happy go lucky mutants in The X-Men #1, published in September 1963.

As everybody knows, The X-Men are mutants, homo superior and the next step up in the ladder of evolution. The X- Men are protegees of another powerful mutant- Professor Xavier who is their mentor, friend and teacher.

These heroes fight the good fight against other evil mutants bent on destroying humans and while seeking to unite humans and mutants alike to co-exist peacefully.

The original X-Men first comprised of Cyclops, Marvel Girl ( Jean Grey ) Iceman, Angel, Iceman and the Beast!

AVENGERS

Avengers assemble! The famous battle cry for the Avengers, a band of heroes that all come together for the greater good to combat menaces that no one single hero can overcome.

These heroes comprise of flagship characters from the Marvel Universe and includes fatcats like Thor, Black Panther, Captain America and others- seemingly created by Stan and Jack after being inspired by DC comics' very own team of major superheroes called the Justice League.

Interestingly, it's also rumored that Stan created the Fantastic Four after Marvel Execs wanted their own super team after DC comics' own Justice League.

The Avengers first appeared in- The Avengers (vol. 1) #1 (Sept. 1963).

Quick, what do you think of Stan Lee? Please stand by for the polls to load....

This fantastic book collects some wonderful Spidey tales from the Amazing Spider-Man daily newspaper strips by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. A must-have for any comic book fan.

BRING ON THE BAD GUYS!

You say you wanna check out this "marvellous" graphic collection (pictured right..) and know more about your favorite villians as written by Stan Lee? Click here!

The bad guys! Where would our lovable spandex wearing super people be without them! The villians challenge our heroes, testing them to the limits- both mentally and physically, bringing out the best in our heroes!

Here is a list of the best and most unforgettable super villians created by Stan and most notably, Jack Kirby. ( and other great legends..)

Again, the list is endless, and there's just no way to fit all of them here.. but you can enjoy the most popular ones!

DR.DOOM

Shall we start out the list with our favorite tyrant and ruler of Latveria- accomplished sorcerer, genius, inventor, brilliant scientist and would be master of the world and universe! ( if he had his way..)

Victor von Doom ( Doc's name ) is probably the most memorable, complex and greatest supervillain ever created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for the Marvel Universe.

Doc first debuted in Fantastic Four #5 (July 1962) and remains as the Fantastic Four's number one arch-enemy and a hands-down favorite among legions of fans all around the world as their all time favorite Marvel villian.

So what's Doctor Doom's appeal anyway? Wizard Magazine rated him the number four favorite all time villian.

For one, Doctor Doom is not your average super villian- rather, Doom believes himself to be good, a true benefactor for mankind- thus his deeds are deemed "good" and "noble" even when it means that he has to destroy or kill some of our favorite superheroes to achieve his goals!

Once a classmate of Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four!

GALACTUS

His name is feared by all lving beings in every corner of the cosmos. Also known as "the devourer of worlds", "ravager of planets" and "destroyer of planets", Galactus is an unstoppable force, and must feed on planets to survive.

Yet another one of Stan and Jack's brilliant villian creation from the Fantastic Four comics, Galactus is a cosmic entity in the Marvel universe, and first appeared as our heroes' antagonist in Fantastic Four vol. 1, #48 (Mar. 1966). The first part of a three-issue arc that fans would later call "The Galactus Trilogy".

This issue also introduced another fantastic character, the Silver Surfer- the herald of Galactus whose primary function is to seek out suitable worlds for Galactus to feed on.

p.s- and oh yeah, forget the lame "Galactus" imposter you saw on Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer!

MAGNETO

You guys know him. You've all seen him in the X men movies.

Stan and Jack created Magneto in X-Men #1 (Sept. 1963), the very first issue about a certain band of merry mutants. ( as Stan likes to call his X Men creation )

The number one baddie and arch enemy of the X Men, Magneto is potrayed as one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe- once blanketed the whole earth with a magnetic field that caused wide spread destruction of catastrophic porportions.

Leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants and the Acolytes.

KINGPIN

The Kingpin is the undisputed underworld leader of New York organized crime. Trademarks include a ever-present cigar, a diamond-studded cane and a gigantic figure that more than equals any world champ sumo wrestler!

Begining as an adversary of Spidey, writer and artist Frank Miller made Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) a prominent villian in the Daredevil comics in his 80s run and the two have since become bitter rivals to the end.

THE GREEN GOBLIN

Possibly Spidey's most popular nemesis and arch-enemy, Gobbie ( Green Goblin ) first appears in Amazing Spider-Man #14 (July 1964) and is created by none other than Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the very same guys that gave the world ol webhead himself.

Although there have been several incarnations of the Green Goblin, the most popular Gobbie is the original Gobbie himself- industrialist Norman Osborn, father of one Harry Osborn- Peter Parker's best friend.

Endowed with superhuman strength that he recieves from a serum, ( which also drives him insane...) Gobbie relies on a wide variety of nutty high-tech weapons of his own designs like the "Pumpkin Bombs" and flies on a "groovy" bat-shaped glider he calls the "Goblin Glider"!

note: Wizard Magazine rated him the 19th greatest villain of all time.

DOCTOR OCTOPUS

Lucky Spidey! Did you know that Spidey has the best rogues gallery in the Marvel Universe? Apart from the fantastic Four series that spawned great villians like the Silver Surfer, Thanos and Doctor Doom- Spidey has some of the most exciting and memorable villians ever-, and almost every other superhero on the block have had to borrow Spidey's bad guy to spruce up their own title once in a while.

Take for example, the Kingpin aka Wilson Fisk. Orignally a Spidey villian, this baddie is now Daredevil's number one antagonist instead of Spidey's. ( Thanks in part also to the Frank Miller's thrilling storylines involving Fisk and Daredevil..)

Anyway, on to the good Dr. Otto Octavius, or better known to the world as Doctor Octopus or Doc Ock, if you prefer. Doc Ock is created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, and first appears in the Amazing Spider-Man #3 (July 1963).

Octavius is a brilliant nuclear physicist, inventor, and lecturer who later utilizes four powerful, mechanical appendages to terrorize the city and it's fair residents!

An accident caused his highly advance mechanical arms to fuse to his body, (an apparatus intially designed for use on his research into atomic physics) while the accident itself mutated his brain allowing him to control the deadly, powerful mechanical arms!

THE LEADER
This funny looking green guy with an elongated forehead is a villian from the Hulk comics and first appeared in tales to astonish # 62 created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Samuel Sterns was just a simple high school dropout, a never do well that ended up working in a chemical research plant after his mum asked him to- without any real ambitions in life and nothing really to look forward to.

Somehow, one day- while moving around some radioactive materials, the very same dangerous material exploded, charging Sterns' every fibre of body with gamma radiation and creating yet another gamma spawned villian to menace the Hulk!

Upon recovering, our villian soon discovers that he's turned green (yes, like the Hulk!) and quickly realised that the radiation had changed his life forever-, granting him superhuman intellect with a oversized elongated head which housed an equally oversized brain and an even bigger ego!

Suddenly possesing new found superhuman intellect which allowed him to impossibly build, create, anaylze anything he could dream of-, he became very ambitious indeed and quickly schemed up plans of world domination and other equally menacing plans to destroy and take over mankind to do as he wanted.

Classic villian!

MR.HYDE

Calvin Zabo was never a nice fella and had been fired from every single job he ever had.
With so much free time and unending hatred for everything, this evil genius craved power and revenge- creating a formula that allowed him to live his favorite story- you guessed it, of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Like his fictional counter-part, Hyde is sadistic, cunning and vile, not to mention dastardly evil - a true villian in every sense of the word.
Mr. Hyde is created by Stan and Don Heck. ( artist)

THE RHINO

In a similiar super soldier program akin to the one that created Captain America- (only this was a Soviet operation) a super-strong polymer was bonded to our super baddie's skin.

Being the simple minded criminal that he was, the Rhino mostly robbed banks and sometimes would work for other super villians that were more ambitious about their evil plans and world ruling careers! ( he's simple that way..)

You could say he was mostly a work for hire muscle bound super villian.

Once, he even decided that he wanted a normal life and did everything possible to make that happen including being a "good guy" for a while.

Later it was back to the Rhino suit for our giant villian after feeling vurnerable and missing the power the suit gave him. Oh well...

Rhino is created by Stan Lee and artist John Romita, Sr., and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #41 (October 1966).

Like the Rhino action figure? Click here..

NOTHING stops the JUGGERNAUT!

Cain Marko aka the JUGGERMANUT first appeared in X-Men #12 (July 1965) created by none other than comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. A popular villian in the X-Men baddie line up, he is actually the big bully step-brother of X-Men founder Professor Xavier.

Many comic book fans mistakenly believe that Cain Marko is a mutant like Xavier when in fact Cain was simply granted with the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak and thus endowed with great power rivaling The Hulk and Thor!

The Juggernaut would often clash with the X-men because of Xavier whom he hates for reasons unknown.

Interestingly, despite his fantastic power, Cain Marko was often more of a greedy thief and a thug than compared to his fellow supervillians cohorts who dreamt of larger conquests and sinister world-destroying schemes.

Like the Juggernaut Popup statue? click here..

LOKI

Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber & Jack Kirby, Loki (Loki Laufeyson)is loosely based upon the Loki of Norse mythology- and is probably Thor's number archenemy and a prominent villian in the Thor comics.

Interestingly, Loki was the very reason why the Avengers first formed, or banded together. Against a devious and cunningly devislish foe like Loki ( being a God of mischeif and all...) who can blame 'em?

Adopted by Odin, ( Thor's dad and the "big guy" in Asgard )Loki is actually the son of Laufey, the now dead king of the Frost Giants, the ancient enemies of the Asgardians. Thor and loki have clashed countless times and the fact that Loki remains one of the most popular villians in the Marvel Universe, he certainly deserves a spot here!

Sandman

You've seen Flint Marko in Sam Raimi's Spidey 3 so you know what this dude's all about! One of the oldest Spidey foe ever, Sandman was of course created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 (Sept. 1963).

His origins are pretty much the same as what you saw in the excellent Spidey 3 movie which saw Marko trapped in a big experiment gone wrong for him. And did you know that Spidey beat him using a vaccum cleaner ( yes, believe it! ) in their first meeting ever? You'd think Spidey would have invested in a portable vaccum cleaner by now...

Again, the list just goes on and on- so it's not possible to list them all here... but these are some of the finest super villians created by Stan and other equally fine comic book artists!
