Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket (1987) Nominated for the Academy Award for screenplay based from previous material. Referred to, as "the greatest war movie ever" and few will disagree. Straight out of boot camp and into Vietnam, the movie's soldiers are exposed to some of the most hideous and soul breaking situations imaginable. The film is set in two distinct parts, a style again used by Quentin Tarantino in his film From Dusk Till Dawn. Kubrick said in an interview that he tried to use the pace used in the referenced book The Short Timers, where the story was continually broken with war battles. This was an effort to make it frustrating for the viewer that just wants to get on with the plot; in effect saying that war doesn't just stop so you can make a film. Watch this one with your assault rifle and your mouse ears if you know what I mean. (Screenplay written and directed by Stanley Kubrick)

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange (1971) is a film based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess. The film stars Malcolm McDowell as charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge.

Stomping, whomping, stealing, singing, tap-dancing, violating. Derby-topped teddy-boy hooligan Alex (Malcolm McDowell) has his own way of having a good time. He has it at the tragic expense of others.

Alex's journey from amoral punk to brainwashed proper citizen forms the dynamic arc of Stanley Kubrick's future-shock vision of Anthony Burgess' novel. Unforgettable images, startling musical counterpoints, the fascinating language used by Alex and his pals - Kubrick shapes them into a shattering whole. Hugely controversial when first released,

A Clockwork Orange won the New York Film Critics Best Picture and Director honors and earned four Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture. The power of its art is such that it still entices, shocks and holds us in its grasp.

Eyes Wide Shut

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) is a erotic mystery film by Stanley Kubrick based on the novella Traumnovelle by Arthur Schnitzler. The film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were a real-life husband and wife at the time of the production. Kubrick died shortly after completing the editing of the film. After a long shooting schedule, the film was released to a mixed critical reaction.

Stanley Kubrick's daring last film is many things. It is a compelling psychosexual journey. A haunting dreamscape. A riveting tale of suspense. A major milestone in the careers of stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. And "a worthy final chapter to a great director's career" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times).

Cruise plays Dr. William Harford, who plunges into an erotic foray that threatens his marriage - and may even ensnare him in a lurid murder mystery - after his wife's (Kidman) admission of sexual longings. As the story sweeps from doubt and fear to self-discovery and reconciliation, Kubrick orchestrates it with masterful flourishes. Graceful tracking shots, controlled pacing, rich colors, startling images: bravura traits that make Kubrick a filmmaker for the ages are here to keep everyone's eyes wide open.

The Shining

The Shining (1980) is a film by Stanley Kubrick based on the novel of the same title by Stephen King. The film stars Jack Nicholson as frustrated writer Jack Torrance and Shelley Duvall as his wife Wendy. Although it can be seen as a horror film, The Shining defies many of the conventions of the genre.

Think of the greatest terror imaginable. Is it a monstrous alien? A lethal epidemic? Or, as in this harrowing masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick, is it fear of murder by someone who should love and protect you - a member of your own family?

From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel, Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre. In a signature role, Jack Nicholson ("Heeeere's Johnny!") plays Jack Torrance, who's come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has never been there before - or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder.

Spartacus

Spartacus (1960) Won the Academy Award for art direction/set decoration, cinematography, costume design, and supporting actor. Nominated for editing and score. Kubrick's only true "epic" movie is also the only movie where he had absolutely no control over the screenplay. The film is about, of course, Spartacus, a slave who was bought and trained to be a gladiator. Using his newly acquired battle skills, he leads a growing army of slaves that first defeats their captures, and later the Roman army. Despite the small degree of artistic freedom taken in all historical dramas, this film holds up very true to the actual recorded events. Of the twenty four-week shoot, a quarter of that time was spent on the final slave army versus Roman army battle. After completion, the scene suffered massive editing to censor some of its more violent moments. The film took even more butchering when it was rereleased seven years later. The whole experience soured Kubrick and he never took a project that he didn't have complete control over again.
