Confetti are a collection of small items usually made from paper or other light materials and are thrown during celebrations, parades, sports games or parties. These are colorful and sometimes glittering materials thrown in abundance either manually or thru the use of machines or "cannons".

Making confetti manually will just require you to cut small pieces of paper and throw them all together during the celebration. However, with the use of machines or "cannons" will require you to use tubes or pipes filled with confetti and launched into the air using compressed air or carbon dioxide. The practice of throwing confetti was started during the end of the 18th century in New York City where it was done during the dedication for the Statue of Liberty. The practice was also called ticker tape parade as the confetti comprised mainly of discarded papers of ticker tape machines used by stockbrokers of those days.

Presently, however instead of ticker tapes, papers from punchers and shredding machines are now used in the so-called ticker tape parades. Especially during parades done at a busy business district some creative people even use the pages of telephone directories to make confetti. They throw these from atop office buildings to rain down to the parade or celebration below.
