Get Your Star Trek Costumes Here - Spock, Captain Kirk and Other Members of the Fleet

With the release of the 2009 reboot movie, Star Trek, interest in all things Trek is once again resurfacing. While some would argue that it never went away, one thing is certain: we will be seeing lots more Captain Kirks and Spocks this Halloween than in recent years.

If you're looking for a Star Trek costume and can't decide which incarnation to choose: Star Trek: The Original Series, The Next Generation or the 2009 movie, you've come to the right place. This lens is all about finding your way through the fleet's uniforms.

Spock's Costume - The Basics

In Star Trek: The Original Series, Spock's costume consisted of a Robin's Egg blue tunic and black pants. The tunic featured gold rings around the sleeves and the trademark insignia on the breast. Underneath the blue tunic was a black shirt.

For Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the uniform was toned down from its Robin's Egg blue to a uniformly blue uniform. This particular uniform almost resembled a Northern Civil War soldier's blue uniform. This is a personal observation only.

For the remaining original movies, The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country, a mostly burgundy uniform was introduced for Spock as well as the rest of the Fleet.

For the 2009 Star Trek film reboot, Spock returned to his roots with a blue tunic with black pants. However, unlike the light the Original Series, Spock's tunic is now a darker blue.

Star Trek: The Original Series Uniforms

Star Trek: The Original Series Costumes

In the Original Series, the characters wore a solid color top, their color dependent on the crew member's branch. Command wore gold. Science/Medical wore blue. Security and engineer wore red. If you've ever heard the phrase, "Red Shirt," it stems from the fact that death toll on ST:TOS was highest among the security and engineering divisions. Or, at least it seemed so.

Captain Kirk's Costume - The Basics

In Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Kirk donned an Avocado tunic with his black pants. However, on film, this tunic took on a gold appearance and most costumers emulate the gold of the costume, not the avocado.

For the films, Kirk's uniforms were similar to Spock's in overall look and feel.
For the 2009 Star Trek film reboot, Kirk returns to the gold tunic with black pants. Albeit a darker gold than the original film look of the television series.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Uniforms

The most widely recognized TNG uniform is the jumpsuit that features the slant above the waistline. More like the uniforms from the Original Series, these jumpsuits were seen in various colors - the color depending on the character's division.
