How To Upgrade Gear in STO

Your Unofficial Guide to beginning crafting in Star Trek Online.

The scientists at Memory Alpha, in the Alpha Centauri Sector, will upgrade your gear in exchange for the samples obtained from anomalous readings. It's a complex system, so here is a bit of a guide for new players.

Where to Begin

Jenna Romaine and her table at Memory AlphaAt level four, you can get a quest from Lt. Commander E'Genn, located in the center of Earth Spacedock, asking you to take a sample to Commander Jenna Romaine at Memory Alpha. Deliver this sample to her, and leave it on the table nearby (by the ramp closest to the transporter room), as your introduction to her and the upgrade system (most commonly called crafting, because that's what it's most like although it's not precisely accurate).

At this point you can access her Store option to see what you can upgrade and how many samples it takes. Samples you don't have enough of and items you don't possess are displayed as red.

As the other scientists say, you have to craft with her before other scientists will be unlocked. For most players, crafting about 7000 credits worth of gear unlocks Tier 2. There appears to be an element of chance, or something we haven't pinned down yet, as this general rule doesn't work for everyone. Some players report that they had to upgrade more gear. My Tier 2 has unlocked (on all my characters) by putting Critical Severity bonuses on exactly 5 phaser beam array Mk IIs.

Tier 3 is more complicated. Trade with the Tier 2 scientist in the same room as the Tier 3 scientist you want to unlock, in order to unlock T3. Again, there are reports that the amounts vary for players, but for many, Tactical Tier 3 unlocks at approximately 100,000 credits worth and Science and Engineering at around 350,000 to 450,000 credits.

All of these totals are the retail price of the final item, not the price of supplies.

Crafting ProTip

You don't need to be carrying your samples to use them. They can be used from your bank.

Anomalous Readings

Anomalous Readings are lootable spots on mission maps. They come in three types and produce a variety of samples. The grade of sample that appears depends on your level. Grade 1 begins to appear at level 1, Grade 2 at level 5, Grade 3 at level 10, Grade 4 at level 15, Grade 5 at level 20, and Grade 6 at level 25.

Here are the types and the samples you can obtain from them, in order of grade:

Anomalous Energy Readings:
1 - Radiation Sample
2 - Antimatter Sample
3 - Tetryon Particle
4 - Methogenic Particle
5 - Tachyon Wave Signature
6 - Chronometric Wave Signature

Anomalous Physical Readings:
1 - Mineral Sample
2 - Biological Sample
3 - Plasma Sample
4 - DNA Sequence
5 - Exobiological Data
6 - Unidentified Substance

Anomalous Technological Readings:
1 - Alien Artifact
2 - Unknown Alloy
3 - Encoded Data
4 - Genetic Sequencer
5 - Photonic Technology
6 - Technical Schematic

ProTip 2

Use your scanner to be sure you haven't missed anomalous readings on a map. The sweeping light points in the direction of the nearest anomaly.

Crafting Tiers

Commander Romaine is the Tier 1 scientist. You work your way up to the next tier by crafting. Grinding out a bunch of hypos and power cells is not the most efficient way to unlock the next tier, as total overall value of the items made seems to be the key factor. At this point, there's no notification you've achieved the next tier. You have to discover this yourself by talking to that tier's scientists.

Tier 1 upgaded items are green uncommons. Tier 2 and Tier 3 upgraded items are all blue rarity.

There has been lots of changes to the crafting part of STO since 4/19/2010. Most of the info is still valid, but due to Free to play coming (projected) Dec, 2011. Dilithium has come to the game has one standard currency and has turned crafting on its head. All high end items are going to require Dilithium and in Tribble's test server (current form) it will take you longer to farm for mats weather it be Samples or Dilithium. Granted as of this writing, F2P has not gone online yet 10.20.2011. But I fear as a player the stage is set for you will be put into a position that you will have to pay real world money to get enough Dilithium to craft your items in a timely matter (meaning, you won't get bored with the game) and rage quit. in frustration. STO is a good game and Crypitc has great people working on the game. But Free to play does put Devs in positions of compromise which causes some people to leave a game because of gates, road blocks , what ever you want to call it. I guess a necessary evil when you go F2P. We shall see.

The simplest but not cost effective way to get this done is to buy 2 Tac ships from each tier. example: 2 x Galaxy class will get you 6 x Phaser Bank VI and 2 Photon Torpedo VI as well as ship parts. So 2 sips get you a dozen Phaser Bank VI ship guns and 4 torp VI. You now have enough to get through that tier. Not only does this cost a far amount of energy creds, it doesnt get you the tiers when you need them. If you bought 2 Galaxy you want 8s and in order to get 8s you need to buy a Tier 5 ship. If you know and Admiral willing to buy 2 ships for you, then give you the weaps you should get 12 VIII phaser bank arrays and all the others. Enough to get you passed the tier requi. If its all about endgame none of this matters much. From what I saw, the 'crafted' stuff isnt purple so its not endgame anyway.
