Star Trek Simming

Before I came to Squidoo, I was very much addicted to Star Trek Simming.  I have since returned to simming, but I am still very active in the writing community too.

So What Is Simming?

Simming is also referred to as RPG. In the science fiction aspect of it, it is called simming. Don't ask me why, but that is what they call it. Obviously I call Star Trek RPG, simming.

What Types of Simming Is There?

There are a few types of simming out there. Some are more popular than others. There is live action, chat, forum, sms and I recently heard of wiki. Blogs are also an option too.

Can You Explain The Different Types of Simming?

Before I had explained that there are different types. Lets start with live action. That one is more like a play. If you ever seen people play dungeons and dragon and are acting out different characters. That is live action. That is something I don't do. Chat is done through a chatroom. Basically you do the actions of the character. Then there is Forum based which is what I had started on. This, I like to call creative writing as you write out what you character does like a book. The same can be done with sms, wiki and even blogs. I'm sure you could pull it off on a squidoo lens, but I won't at this time.

So What Type Of Simm Do I Play On?

I used to do play by forum. I have since switched to play by SMS which is similiar in nature except you don't have to scroll down for each post. Soon enough, the name will be changing, but I think people will still try to call it SMS. In this case, SMS stands for simm management system.

So How Do I Get Started?

Choose A Site And A Simm

The first thing that you have to do is choose a site and a simm to play on. Some sites are big and yet others are small. I currently play over on Bravo Fleet. I currently play two characters on there. One is a regular chief counselor/assistant chief medical officer and the other is the commanding officer which runs a ship. You guessed it. I am going to be plugging my ship here. If you like star trek and you love writing stories and you are willing to work with others, you should try simming on my ship; the USS Horizon. I could send you to the academy, but I can work with you and try to teach you the basics if you need it. Nobody taught me and I caught on. There is always room for improvement though. You may be surprise, you'll get the hang of it right away. The only rule I have on my simm really is that you post at least once a week which is common among all star trek simms.

Choose Your Position

Do you have a favorite position that you would love to play? Is it available. If not, you can go to another simm to look or just pick one that is available. I have personally tried most positions. I typically like the medical or command positions. When I first started simming, I had started in Ops.

Choose Your Character

There are many options when it comes to choosing your character. In star trek, there are many different species so you have a choice on that. I usually play human or human/betazoid hybrid. I do have one character that is a klingon/betazoid hybrid. You also need to choose the character's name. I usually do a search online if I not sure of the name under baby names and surnames to come up with a great name for my character.

Writing A Post

Getting Started

Simming is a mixture of reading and writing. In order to understand what is going on, you have to read. Now how do you write a post? It is really not that hard as long as you know how to read and if you have read books, you understand how to write a post. When it comes to writing, I usually write in third person point of view. That is past tense and the only time that you would write in first person is through dialog. Dialog is through the quote marks.

Rules I Go By

Simming is common sense for the most part. If you are new to simming, you may be clueless, but the more you do it, the better you will get. Each simm is different. Some simms like people writing for them and yet others don't. I don't only because my characters in the past have been abused. We treat our characters like our babies so a lot of simmers are attached to their characters. In most cases, people will joint post with each other. I have come across some that refuse which makes it really hard to simm. In order to write great posts that are relatively long, joint posting is a must. I do both solo and joint posts. You can still write great solo posts, but its easier to do joint ones when your character is interacting with another.
