Star Trek's Tricorder
Three types of tricorders were used in the sci-fi series. The standard tricorder was used to check out areas that were new and unfamiliar to the crew. The Starfleet also had the medical and engineering tricorders.
You can see how far ahead of the times that Gene Roddenberry was by introducing scanners that seem so common now, especially in the medical field. But, in the 60's we did not even have MRI scanners! The first MR image was not published until 1973.

- There would have been many times when I was in practice that having a tricorder would have been helpful. They are getting closer to having something. It kind of looks like a very small ICU monitor.
