Star Wars Halloween

A Long Time Ago, in A Halloween Far, Far Away....

I am a self proclaimed geek and I love both Halloween and Star Wars. Since the Star Wars Blu-Rays just came out recently (and I watched all six movies back to back over two days), I decided to combine the two things and write this lens about fun ways to decorate your home for a Star Wars themed Halloween party. I hope you get inspired and have a great time!

You've Taken your First Step into a Spookier World

Star WarsThe first step in planning your awesome Star Wars Halloween is deciding what type of theme you want to base your decor around. You could have a perfectly good Star Wars party by just going with a general theme and including anything Star Wars related, but I think it would be fun to recreate one or more of the famous Star Wars locales and build your theme around it. I've listed a few idea below as jumping off points, but don't be afraid to be creative!
  • 1Mos Eisley Cantina: What better place to have a party than the famous "wretched hive of scum and villainy?" Mos Eisley is a perfect party atmosphere, complete with music, interesting characters and lots of aliens for people to dress up as.
  • 2Jabba's Palace: Like your parties a little on the wild side? Know someone who would look great in a gold bikini? Jabba's Palace might be your prefect Halloween destination. Plenty of great characters to choose from, the sarlacc pit, R2 serving drinks, Han in Carbonite, the Rancor, Pig Men, the possibilities are endless.
  • 3Death Star Battle: This one might be more challenging to pull off, but I think there are a lot of creative possibilities here. Instead of pin the tail on the donkey, you could have hit the port with the proton torpedo! Great theme if you prefer to go for a general sort of space theme with lots of ships as decorations.
  • 4Hoth Battle: Again, another challenge to re-create, but lots of fun possibilities. Snow Speeders, AT-ATs, stormtroopers, the rebel base, taun-tauns, probe droids, lots of fun stuff to work with.
  • 5Cloud City: If you're looking for a fancier or more whimsical sort of setting, Cloud City might be perfect for you. Sure our heroes didn't have much fun there, but a city in the clouds seems like a great place to party, if you can avoid those pesky Imperial Entanglements.
  • 6Ewok Village: I know, lots of die hards hate Ewoks, but Ewok village could be a great setting for a kid's party or if you want to go on the darker side, get out all your Ewok frustrations and decorate your party with a few choice Ewok parts....
  • 7Dagobah: You can't really beat the eerie swamps of Dagobah for a creepy Star Wars location. Lots of jungle, mist, creepy crawlies, monsters and "the cave" would make a great sort of haunted house attraction.

That's no Jack 'O Lantern, it's a Space Station!

Now that you've picked a theme, you need to find (or make) some awesome decor to bring your theme to life. Here's some of my favorite Star Wars themed items:

You can't really have a proper Star Wars party without lightsabers. Whether you want to use them as part of the decor, make up some fun Star Wars theme party games or even just put out a barrel of them for party goers to have fun with, you've got to have some lightsabers.

The lightsaber might be a more elegant weapon, but sometimes there's no match for a good blaster by your side. Plus, everyone likes toy guns right?

This fun item would be great for candy or any other party favors you'd like to make available.

If you need some easy to come by small decorations, cake toppers or even party favors, Star Wars action figures are relatively cheap, plentiful and fun.

You can't set the proper mood, without the right music.

This particular one, is a bit pricey, but if you can find or make a few reasonably priced Stormtrooper helmets, a great addition to your Ewok village theme or general Star Wars party would be a recreation of the Stormtrooper helmet bongos. Helmets also would make fun serving bowls for snacks, candy, etc.

Star Wars Episode IV Imperial TIE Fighter Replica

This detailed replica is probably a bit of overkill for the average Star Wars fan, but I've often considered decorating a room in my home with Star Wars vehicles hanging from the ceiling and I think a few Star Wars vehicles would be a great addition to any Star Wars theme party. For cheaper options there are reasonably priced toys and models at Wal-Mart, Toys R US or online that could be incorporated into your theme in a variety of ways.

A simple and fun way to add some Star Wars pizazz to your decor is to hang some Star Wars posters.

For you brave souls who like to make your own decorations, here's some resources you might find useful as reference or inspiration:

For those ambitious enough to try and build their own Star Wars vehicles, this book takes a detailed look at some of the most famous Star Wars vehicles.

I Feel Like I Could Take on this Whole Party By Myself!

Star WarsHere's some do it yourself decorating ideas.
  • 1Jack 'O Lanterns: There's plenty of examples of some pretty nifty Star Wars themed Jack 'O Lanterns that would be a great addition to any Star Wars party. Patterns can be purchased from party stores or downloaded online.
  • 2Paper Mache: Not just for grade schoolers! The Death Star, various planets, Stormtrooper or Darth Vader masks should all be very doable and the more ambitious might even want to attempt characters and vehicles.
  • 3Construction Paper: If paper mache is a bit ambitious or time intensive for you, you can always find good pictures to trace in children's coloring books and create your own Star Wars characters, ships, etc out of paper. If you're having a kid's party, it might even be fun to let them make their own.
  • 4Tabletop scenes: Cotton or fake Christmas tree snow, toy or handmade trees, sand or sand colored table cloth, a few Star Wars toys and/or creatively used costume masks and you can create your own Star Wars scenes. If you want to get really creative you can even incorporate your party food into the decor by making a swampy looking punch, some Sarlac pit nachos or maybe even some refreshing blue milk!
  • 5Homemade outerspace: Drape some black cloth with some holes punched in it over some lamps, hang some tin foil stars and styrofoam planets and you've got your own space scene. Jazz it up with a few paper, toy or model ships for that extra special touch.

Use the Force Spook!

Star Wars - Saga CollageYou can go as simple or as elaborate as your time, budget and creativity allows with a Star Wars Halloween theme. Here, I'll outline what I would consider a middle of the road approach using the Mos Eisley Cantina theme.

What you'll need:
A few toy lightsabers and laser pistols
Some star wars themed cups
A few Star Wars posters
Some Star Wars themed food & drink
A Star Wars jack 'o lantern or two
Some Star Wars masks
A couple tables
Portable CD player or iPod

The Plan
Jazz up the entrance to wherever you are having the party with a Star Wars Jack 'o Lantern or two. If you can pipe some Star Wars music out there to set the mood, all the better. Somewhere near the entrance set up some swag bags or a goodie table with snacks, candy, your toy weapons and any other fun little Star Wars trinkets your guests might enjoy playing around with. Decorate the walls with your posters and masks. To achieve the cantina effect, if you have a dimmer switch turn the lights down, if not maybe remove a few lamps to try and dim the room. Set up a portable music player to play some Star Wars themed music. If you want to go authentic you can play that one song the band seems to play throughout the party, but your guests might prefer a bit more variety. Set up a table to serve as the "cantina bar." If you're having a party for adults, serve some Star Wars themed cocktails. For kids or non-drinking grown ups, some punch and snacks will do. Get your friends to come dressed up in their favorite Star Wars costumes and have a blast!

Awesome :) I once considered decorating a Christmas tree with star wars action figures and leaving it up year round, but decided against it. I might still do it someday though ;)
