May The Force Be With You
En route to becoming an avid collector of stuffed animals, Chewbacca was, naturally, my favorite character. For a long time, I thought the Storm Troopers were robots. I wasn't quite sure how Han and Luke were able to rip out the machinery and wiring so quickly to disguise themselves when they were in the Death Star, but I let it go.
Light sabers seemed like the coolest things ever and my brother and I had toy versions, basically a flashlight that lit up a long tube of plastic. We had action figures (I still have Chewie, Obi-Wan, and a Jawa) and trading cards. My brother had the cool Star Wars sheets.
Three years passed and we saw The Empire Strikes Back together. Though it's probably my favorite now, I found it upsetting back then because it was unresolved at the end. Also, it has snakes and Jabba the Hut - ew!
Another three years passed and my brother was too cool to go to the movies with me. I was disappointed; I'd felt like seeing Star Wars movies together was our thing. Since he was seeing it before me, I made him promise not to talk to me about it until I'd seen it. I still loved it. I enjoyed the Ewoks despite the flak they were getting even then. Still liked Chewie better though.
"May The Force Be With You" became a phrase to sniff out like-minded science fiction/action-adventure lovers. Weren't too many where I grew up. But when I went to college, I found several new friends because of our mutual love of Star Wars.
Star Wars Movie Poll
Epic viewings
My freshman year of college, I experienced two epic viewings of Star Wars.
First was a marathon of the original trilogy one Saturday night in my dorm. Only two of us stayed for all three movies. It was so late, or early depending on your point of view, when Return of the Jedi finished. We were exhausted but refused to give up. The other person who stayed was a senior I hadn't known beforehand, but we each knew something fundamental about the other by the end of the night.Turned out he had lots of science fiction enthusiast friends that I came to know.
That was the year I took Italian 105-106. A majority of my classmates voted to have our weekly quizzes on Mondays rather than Fridays to my dismay. I got invited to a Sunday double feature screening of Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, both on pristine 70 mm prints at Lincoln Center in New York City, a couple of hours away from school. I was torn: I needed to study but it was two of my favorite movies.
Eventually one of my new friends talked me into going, and thank the stars for that! The theater's screen was massive and the prints were beautiful. The sound was also amazing though it was occasionally drowned out by a theater full of people reciting their favorite lines. Usually that would drive me crazy, but I'd seen it so many times that I could only think: my people.
And despite the few hours of sleep I got before I had to drag myself to Italian, I did fine on my quiz. Moral: study, but don't pass up amazing experiences when they come round.
Which trilogy do you prefer?
Original trilogy or New prequel trilogy?

Give me the original! Han, Leia, Luke, & Chewie!

Chazz: I've asked myself what Lucas was thinking often but can only come up with making more money.
---Chazz says:
No contest. The prequels are annoying and poorly acted. What was Lucas thinking?
Rankography says:
Seriously, you have to ask???
RocklawnArts says:
So true, Mac33. I do like the cleaned up film but not the added/altered scenes or increased effects of the original trilogy. Han shot first! I am tired of seeing Lucas rehash the same territory or trample new SW territory with poor story-telling.
Mac33 says:
The original original trilogy (not with the added scenes or "enhanced" effects) is my favorite trilogy. Lucas should stop the re-releasing nonsense and get busy on a postquel trilogy...that's what I've been wanting to see since Return of the Jedi.
fugeecat says:
I really like the original best, but I was glad when the put out the prequels.
Close2Art says:
Original all the way
Give me the prequels! Jedis in their prime!
RocklawnArts says:
BloomingRose: That's hilarious. Love it. :)
bloomingrose says:
I don't even really understand the prequels but your poll is very unbalanced. I have been watching Monk and it has made me even more likely to need to balance everything.

The prequel trilogy
Love it or hate it?
What did you think of the prequel trilogy?

I wanted to throttle Jar Jar and Anakin!
RocklawnArts says:
The moment Liam Neeson grabbed Jar Jar's tongue at the dinner table, I felt like I was watching Liam Neeson being disgusted with that character and even the story he was in.
Rankography says:
Marginal at best. I liked some of the performances, Liam Neeson, Sam Jackson but most of it was absurd and of course Jar Jar Binks was a complete insult to the entire Sci Fi Genre!!
Close2Art says:
it didn't prefer it as much a bit of a let down..
RocklawnArts says:
Very good assessment, Rewards4life. Lucas went overboard with back story that was better left to the imagination. Special effects do not salvage it.
Rewards4life says:
Not very good at all. They miss a lot of the family feel you get from the original, the innuendo and banter have gone to create a truly clinical and wooden feel of acting and story not helped by the overuse of special effects.
Loved seeing young Obi-Wan Kenobi and all the other Jedis!
goo2eyes says:
i don't like it but...
RocklawnArts says:
Yeah, I was really hoping for more too. I liked maybe the 1st 20 minutes of Phantom Menace and then it all went downhill.
Tipi says:
Guess I thought the prequel was a dissappointment.

- Very cool! The Lego Star Wars video games rekindled my love of the franchise after the prequels squashed it a while. I mostly pretend the prequels didn't happen now. ;)

- I like the original Star Wars movies best. There was so much camaraderie between the characters.
