Star Charts and Chore Charts Reward Children for Good Behavior, Learning New Skills, Meeting Goals
Everyone appreciates the value of a gold star or reward badge that says "I'm special!" or "I did it!". Kids really respond to praise and encouragement-that's why star charts, chore charts or progress charts offer parents and educators excellent tools for building positive behaviors and and boosting kids' self esteem or for helping children learn new skills.
Checklists, chore charts and star charts teach kids about sequencing, time management and organizing skills. Adults make lists of all sorts, so with a chart or list to check off, kids stay focused and look forward to goal completion; reward charts they design themselves for any project or purpose will help children learn to set goals, plan steps and tasks, and gain satisfaction from achievement.
Star charts work best when they're used as a positive reinforcing tool rather than competitive one. It's also best to keep rewards - if any - small and related to the charted activity. An interesting chart coupled with brightly colored stickers can go a long way to helping children reach goals, count down to future events or develop new skills.

Encouragement is not bribery, it's a reward and recognition of a job well done
When children are learning about responsibility, mastering a new skill or working to improve behavior it's important to provide positive encouragement. With behavior charts (also named reward charts or star charts), kids get visual positive reinforcement. As they work toward a specific goal they can track their progress quickly by referring to the chart's time line reward stickers or check marks as symbols of their success. With a younger child, start with a potty training chart (or a target for little boys), progress to a bedtime chart or tooth brushing chart - a single task is enough to chart at one time with a preschooler.
For older children, chart or checklist daily tasks such as making the bed, brushing teeth, feeding a pet, taking out the trash or completing homework by a specified time.
Use checklists for fun events, too: develop party plans, wish lists, movie night suggestions, or design a chart to countdown to the next family vacation.

Motivator or Problem?
Educators and parents have different opinions about chore charts, reward charts or star charts. Some feel that using these charts sets a poor example for children who will expect a reward for doing or learning things they must accomplish no matter what. Others feel the use of star charts helps children focus on goals and have a visual or tangible progress record.

- What's amazing is that I've spent two summers in professional development training (I'm a teacher) and the current thought, at least where I was, is that you should never post anything like an achievement or goal chart anywhere. A few years ago, goal charts were advocated. So I say do what you think is right, you're probably more of an expert than most experts.

- I've used a variety of things over the years and change it up as needed. To me that is the key: being flexible enough to realize that one method isn't working anymore and being willing to use something new. Nice job on this, as always! :) Adding this to my lenses on parenting.

- I used to give my daughter reward cards every time she finished her home-work without a fight! When she reached ten, I would give her a treat or gift. It worked very well at the time, now she doesn't need it anymore. I still make sure she gets rewarded for doing well with her work, and she is aware of why!

- It is really important to teach children how to set goals but it is harder to keep them motivated. A chart which they can see their success steps is the best way to remind them that they can do it. Great lens.

- Fabulous lens. I believe that using reward charts prepares a child for success in life. Working towards goals for rewards is what a successful career is about, it's what successful relationships, health and all other aspects of life are about. Even volunteering is rewarded - although the person is not doing it for monetary payment, they're doing it for the emotional, social and spiritual rewards. :)
