- I love this lens! I toilet-trained my children using the star chart system. They were able to choose which stickers they liked best so they were able to be more a part of the whole process. It worked wonderfully. Except for the day I went into the bathroom and saw my son's chart full of every sticker he owned. :)

- What's amazing is that I've spent two summers in professional development training (I'm a teacher) and the current thought, at least where I was, is that you should never post anything like an achievement or goal chart anywhere. A few years ago, goal charts were advocated. So I say do what you think is right, you're probably more of an expert than most experts.

- I've used a variety of things over the years and change it up as needed. To me that is the key: being flexible enough to realize that one method isn't working anymore and being willing to use something new. Nice job on this, as always! :) Adding this to my lenses on parenting.

- I used to give my daughter reward cards every time she finished her home-work without a fight! When she reached ten, I would give her a treat or gift. It worked very well at the time, now she doesn't need it anymore. I still make sure she gets rewarded for doing well with her work, and she is aware of why!

- Fabulous lens. I believe that using reward charts prepares a child for success in life. Working towards goals for rewards is what a successful career is about, it's what successful relationships, health and all other aspects of life are about. Even volunteering is rewarded - although the person is not doing it for monetary payment, they're doing it for the emotional, social and spiritual rewards. :)

- We love everything about your lens! We've mainly used reward charts with smiley faces, but sometimes we have a sticker page and get to pick out our own design. We also have used different colored stars on charts following a path as we've made progress and learned different things. (P.S. We love praise and rewards, doesn't everyone?) Thank you for sharing a great lens.

- Very good lens. We use almost the same system, but use a marble jar. Each time one of our children get a certain amount of marbles, they will get the prize behind it. Could be video game, a new movie, a new toy just something they want.
We reward them once their chores are done, when they help when not asked. When all homework is done...many different things.
It has been very successful in our family. The chart idea is great and I would recommend it to any parent. Thank you for sharing!!

- I have to offer a different opinion: B.F. Skinner's Behaviourism theories (which he came at by rewarding lab rats, not children) have been debunked. The risk of star charts and the like is that the child will only "perform" when there is a reward up for grabs. I highly recommend the books of Alfie Kohn, partcularly Unconditional Parenting and Punished by Rewards.

- I agree that with some children there is a problem using a star chart as a performance tool. I prefer to use them as a way to teach kids to be organized or to track their success at reaching self-set goals. Some kids need more structure than others ... but no child should be a trained performer, for sure.

- I love the principles behind reward charts, it not only develops independance in carrying out tasks, but responsibility, my daughter used to love a reward chart, only to see how many "stars" she could collect. I worked in a school for children with behavioural difficulties and regularly worked at home on their reward charts, she wanted one too. It was great fun.

- Nice lens. We used one of these for getting our toddler used to sleeping in his own bed (a racing car). The problem though, is if they like the star chart so much they want to get out of bed to play with it! Potty training time soon, so we will probably use it again. Wish us luck!

- We got a magnetic star chart for our kids, and it really worked a treat! Everything from potty training to eating veggies. When they earned a star, we found that it worked best to let them pick a color and stick it on to the chart themselves. I think it gave them a sense of ownership over their accomplishments!

- Star Charts. I remember back when I was much younger that I'd boast around our house every time I got a star on my paper. The star seems to be the source of pride and fulfillment for children. Likewise it pushes them to work harder and strive to earn another star. Great lens!

- Star charts seem like a good idea but I have found that they often have a negative effect on the kids with the least stars. When stars are used by children to reward themselves for goals that they have set themselves, I find that they work very well, offering a visual reminder of all that he or she has accomplished.

- great resource here! a well deserved 5 stars.
What I'd like to see is some info/examples of when and how you reward and what the prize is after getting a certain number of stickers for example. Do you take away something for not doing a chore or behaving badly or do you just focus on positive rewarding?
thanks for the great lens.

- When I saw the title -- star charts for kids -- I was thinking as in horoscope or astrology. Positive reinforcement is such an important element in ALL of our lives -- start with kids and continue through adults and senior citizens to give us meaning and define our purpose.
