StarCom: The U.S. Space Force could have been one of the greats among 80s-era toy empires: they had a huge line of toys, a Saturday-morning cartoon and even lunch boxes! It was like G.I. Joe in space, with the Young Astronauts' Council's official support to boot!
So why did they almost immediately fall into obscurity?
Maybe it was bad marketing. Maybe the plot was too realistic to capture kids' imaginations. Whatever the reason(s), my family didn't discover StarCom until the toys were clearance specials at Value City—and by then it was too late.
Too late to save, perhaps, but not too late to enjoy. So come along and discover the best 80s-era cartoon and toy line you've never heard of!

1988 Product Demo
Even though this is a demonstration of some of the last StarCom toys ever produced, it does a good job of showing what made them unique: MAGNA-LOCK®.
StarCom: The Toys
The key to understanding my childhood is a [missing] little plastic visor.
My parents found a huge selection of figures, vehicles and playsets on clearance at the local Value City® department store one Christmas, and my dad spent the next few weeks building us a 4'x8' Lunar base with landing strips, launch pads, and slots perfectly prepared for the two StarCom bases they'd bought! (I'll have to dig up a picture and add it here later.) You should have seen the eyes bulging out of my brother's and my sockets on Christmas morning that year, when they led us into the kitchen (it wouldn't fit in the living room!).
Starcom on eBay
You can still find StarCom toys on eBay... and look at those deals!
Fetching new data from eBay now... please stand byStarCom: the Cartoons
There was only one thing to do: we had to program our VCR (TiVo? C'mon, this was 1990!) and hope someone remembered to fast-forward our designated StarCom tape to the end of the last episode. (Sometimes we caught part or all of Record Breakers, because it came on right after StarCom.)
Little did we know then that StarCom would soon disappear from the Family Channel's lineup altogether. What we thought was a hardship (not being able to watch the cartoons when they aired) was actually a blessing, because we could now watch the series again and again for years to come!
So I guess I'm saying God wanted us to watch StarCom. :)
Anyway, as we grow older we also become more critical, don't we? Looking back on these cartoons now, I think the mattes and explosions are excellent... but boy, is the writing clichéd! So I thought I'd have a little fun and give you a tongue-in-cheek synopsis of each of the 13 episodes.
It's like this one saying in my family: "We only tease you because we love you."
Episode 1: Nantucket Sleighride
or "You Can Pick Your Friends, But You're Stuck With Your Family"

Ah, Jupiter-home to bright skies and some sort of floating jellyfish things imaginatively called "airwhales." Two floating research stations have been built to study these creatures, and the kindhearted Col. James "Dash" Derringer can't wait to ditch his mother, Amanda, and younger sister, Lianna at one of the doomed stations. (Oops, did I say "doomed"?)

Employing his tricked-out Starmax Bomber Transport Missile Cruiser ("chicks dig it"), Dash drops his mom and sis like a hot potato in a packing crate (technically it's a Transport Pod, but same diff). Look how much happier he feels now that they're out of his hair for a good, long time (he wishes). And can you blame him? His sister doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb in the box.

So how did Lianna get to where she is today? One look at that Pantene "swish" tells you all you need to know. (Tells the crew all they need to know, too.) Momma is smart enough to be a bit protective... it can get pretty lonely in a floating jellyfish observatory halfway across the Solar System.

But there's no time for romance to blossom-Emperor Dark's evil Shadow Force loathes both cuddly floating jellyfish and ditzy women who would build careers out of observing them. "Begone, foul observatory!" screams the robot droid, as he launches a barrage of missiles upon the unsuspecting researchers. (Not very observant, are they?) And just as Dash was about to kick back with the boys, the distress call is sounded and he's gotta go back and save his family. ("I can't leave you two alone for a minute!")

So Dash sets off with Col. John "Slim" Griffin and Col. Paul "Crowbar" Corbin, to save the research station with their F-1400 Starwolf Flexwing Astro Fighters! Will they make it in time? Will the Shadow Force make life difficult for nature-lovers across the Solar System? Tune in (on YouTube, below) to find out!

Episode 2: Caverns of Mars
or "How Politically-Incorrect Can We Be In Twenty Minutes?"

Mars is a creepy, creepy planet full of synthesizers... and the invasion has begun! Oh, wait—those are our people. Oh well, my bad. Anyway, Dash busts Slim's chops for confusing a wall for a whole city (oh, ha ha! hee hee!), but this episode's token "pretty face" Consuela (not Dash's sister, thankfully) concurs with Slim's astute assessment. Dash offers her a lunch of cow leather, and they skip off together, hand in hand.

A Martian dust storm shows up, and within seconds the whole excavation site is evacuated! Amazing! Consuela is either a total ditz or a robot, and we learn Slim has a niece and nephew who just happen to also be on Mars (what a coinkydink!) and are named after Tom & Jerry. This makes sense, because as we'll soon see, these two kids are about as impervious to real physical harm as that cat and mouse duo.

Some creepy white guy sporting a redneck moustache has Tom and Jenny (see? I told you!) riding his Laser R.A.T. because (and I quote), "You kids should know how to handle vehicles like this, in case there's ever an emergency." The thing has a freakin' laser cannon mounted over the driver's head, for cryin' out loud! "Bob" here must be Charlton Heston's great-great grandson or something. (And he's a Battlecrane pilot—what's he even doing driving a Laser R.A.T.!) Anyway, the kids fight over who gets to sit on Bob's lap, the storm reaches them, and they try to get back to Borough City (wow, those writers sure put some effort into that one) "before it's too late!"

Oops. Too late.

My mom and dad saw this mug listed here, and got me one for my birthday! Are they cool, or what?
Episode 3: Fire and Ice
A Study in Contrasts

Welcome to Jupiter's icy moon, Europa, where the planetary survey ship Houston has a problem: they've been probing the ice-covered planet, and after breaking through their surface have discovered... sounds! As in, animal sounds! Hooray!

Moving right along, come see Jupiter's volatile, volcanic moon, Io. Emperor Dark's robotic commander has developed a "foolproof" plan to destroy StarCom! (All while brushing molten lava off his suit? Dude's tough. Don't mess with him.)

Ah, yes, there's our heroes... who just happen to be heading directly toward trouble. Again. Yet somehow they think they'll be taking it easy on Ganymede. Haven't these guys learned anything yet?

And we'll introduce you to yet another girl (two of 'em, if artificial life counts, too): Lieutenant Kelsey Carver (Commander Brickley's personal assistant) and G.E.N.I.E. (General Efficiency Neo-Intelligent Entity).

Okay, okay, check this out: this right here is the absolute coolest use of Magna-Lock technology in the entire series: this guy literally picks up an asteroid and uses it as a shield as he flies over erupting volcanoes! That's a real man, there. A real man who's just stumbled upon the Shadow Force's latest operation...

- I played with the first-generation Starcom toys, and just looking at them now brings me fond memories of recreating canyons with blankets and flying my Star Bomber down it on the way to some kind of mission.
The toys were awesome. They had a variety of moving parts, and each toy had some kind of symbiotic relationship with the other - i.e. the Hove Crane would lift the cargo from the back of the bomber, and fly away using its flip-out engines.
Really cool stuff. Wish I still had them.

Special Thanks:
Since 1999, the StarCom Yahoo Group has been bringing together fans and collectors, and even some of the people behind the toys!Join the group to chat with other fans and collectors, and don't miss their animation cel gallery!

I couldn't hope to compete with the StarCom Resource Guide and Museum, a site put together by Gary Anderson, Patrick Stewart and Ward Schultz. It's hands-down the best resource out there for information on the StarCom toy line. So make sure you check out what they have over there, too!

I would have done anything to be an astronaut if it were really as exciting as advertised!
