Your Guide To Owning Starcraft In Three Easy Steps!

That's right, three easy steps! A lot of people think Starcraft 2 is a complicated game that is very hard to master, but its not! If you follow these three easy steps you will find that your game will improve substantially.

1. Scout, Scout, Scout!

Starcraft 2The most important thing you must do in Starcraft 2 is scout your opponent. You should be doing this constantly throughout the whole game. The way to win in Starcraft 2 is to always counter your opponent, and the only way to do this is to know what your opponent is doing. To emphasize how important this is let me quote Force from ForceStarcraft2Strategy as saying "The game should be called ScoutCraft instead of Starcraft."

2. Macro Up

Starcraft 2The second most important thing to do is to work on your economy and always keep yourself busy. You have to constantly be moving and clicking, always doing something. Make scv's, expand, make fighting units, scout, etc. It will help to know the many hotkeys you can use so that you don't have to waste your time clicking around to get things done. Also never allow your minerals and gas to get above 500, this is a sign that your macro is slipping. Multitaskers will be good at this, but if you are not a good multitasker its ok. Below there is a YouTube video that shows you haw to get started with your macro. I have found the Mineral Drill to be very very helpful. You will be good at this with practice, which brings us to our last point...

You can also use a similar type of drill with Protoss (gateways/zealots) and Zerg (spanishiwa build).

3. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Starcraft 2As they always say, practice makes perfect. This is especially true with Starcraft 2. Never ever practice against a computer. Always practice against a real human being. Humans are much harder than computers because humans are more unpredictable. This will prepare you for anything you might come across. Also, practicing will help you learn build times, build orders, counters to certain builds, your races unique abilities, etc. There's no need to memorize anything about your race right now because you will learn it eventually if you practice enough.

You can also view your own replays and evaluate your gameplay. It really helps to realize what you are doing wrong and what you could have done better. It is also a good idea to see what other players are doing in their gameplay.

Starcraft 2 Cast Viewing

A note about watching casts

Watching replay casts by commentators such as Force, Day[9], HD Starcraft, and Husky on YouTube is a great way to learn new strategies, but don't go overboard spending all your time on them. Nothing is better than actually playing the game and getting used to the flow of it. A combination of practice, viewing casts, and viewing your own replays will give you the best results.
Hopefully this wasn't all too obvious. Even I find myself forgetting to do some of these things. Its always good to get back to the basics to make sure you are at the top of your game.
