Starcraft 2 Strategy Guide

In case you don't know what an expo is, let me tell you.

At some point you'll want to collect more minerals than the eight crystals you start next to.

You'll build your race's main base around some other minerals, this is referred to as having an expo, or expansion.

Zerg should expand early and fast on big maps, as a good rule of thumb. Terran should expand a little more cautiously, and so should Protoss.

The reason for this? Zerg need more larvae, plus the Zerg Hatchery is less expensive (by 100 minerals) than the Protoss Nexus or the Terran Command Center.

So Zerg should be more aggressive about putting up an expansion early.

Usually a Starcraft 2 game will progress into a battle within minutes of starting, so plan your expansion to build when the battle is taking place farthest from that location.

The key to a good expansion is keeping it hidden or defended. Keeping it hidden requires less resources, so building an expansion in an off-beat spot is a great strategy!

I could write for hours on expansions, and you'll get a feel for them as you play more and more. They are drastically important.

Knowing when to attack will make or break you in the realm of Starcraft 2.

Lots of knowing when to attack is in the gut, you feel powerful, so you make a move on that feeling.

Of course their is also a lot of strategy involved, like attacking when you've secured a significant resource of technology advantage.

You also must consider what sort of attack your doing, and what your retreat options will be. Can you afford to lose the troops your attacking with?

Another major decider is can I win without attacking? You'll often find in a Starcraft 2 game the decision comes down to attack now or be destroyed.

If your army is more destructive than your opponents, you might want to attack him as soon as he attacks your base!

Knowing you can kill him off first means it is time to attack! It's a mix of strategic thinking, gut feeling, and doing what is necessary to win.

Boy does my blood get heated when my opponent is favored, a great chance for me to show my improvements.

Don't try to force the win. Let the win come to you.

When I'm playing random team games, again in the Diamond league, I'm still dealing with players who force attacks at the wrong moments. Always think before you act. Don't push battles where you aren't sure you'll win, unless they are unavoidable. Keep a clear head about you at all times, never complain about losing or blame it on your partner!

Keep your focus. Don't get distracted. Don't give up. Think outside of the box, this is where greatness comes from.

Don't be afraid to lose. Play game after game! Watch as you improve more then those around you!
