Starcraft : Brood War

StarCraft is a science fiction real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Brood War, is the most popular of the 3 expansion packs, it features new units in each of the 3 races (Terran, Protoss and Zerg) as well as a new campaign, music and upgrades for the Terran, Protoss and Zerg races.

Absolutely everything you need to know about Starcraft is here! Single and multiplayer tactics, strategies, hints, tips, tricks - for every race, unit, structure, mission, and campaign!

What's new and what's different?

Brood War's gameplay remains fundamentally unchanged from that of StarCraft, however, it introduces fine-tuning to unit costs and some abilities for strategic and balance purposes. It has also been noted by various video gaming critics that Starcraft : Brood War, seems to have changed the ability for players to rush and the general increase in AI and Campaign difficulty. This didn't defer reviewers from highly rating the game.

This game is exceptionally popular in Korea, where players form teams and compete against one another on regular basis. Matches are also televised and shown to the public.

Play Starcraft Better

There's no excuse as to why you cannot be good at Starcraft (although having Korean blood surely helps). But listed below are several tips that would help anyone.

  • Know the build tree of the race you're playing! If you don't know how to build a unit, how they are best utilized you cannot get the best out of your race.

  • Think tactics, its called RTS for a reason, its not just a mindless unit grind.

  • Micro and Macro well, having a good economy while maintaining a great army would do you a good deal.

  • Know your enemy, know their weaknesses and abuse it.

  • Upgrade, upgrade and upgrade, by upgrading you are getting more value from each unit that you construct.

MORE WAYS TO IMPROVE

Play the Campaign

The campaign is a really, really, really good way to get to learn about individual units and how they are best used and countered. By playing the campaign, I don't mean cheating, if you use cheats, then you really shouldn't be playing this game, there isn't much of a point anyway.

Just remember that while playing the campaign, keeping your units alive is a great idea because resources are limited.

  • Protoss should use Shield Batteries

  • Terran should use SCVs to repair and Medics to heal infantry

  • Zerg can just leave their units there as they auto heal, burrowing to protect them while healing is also a viable option

It is always satisfying to have a bunch of veterans who have all accumulated over 20 kills each!

Build Quickly!

Building quickly cannot be emphasized enough, by not building fast enough you can be caught without a sizable army when attacked. Not developing your economy would mean that there's no resources to support all those buildings you have!

Remember no one loves hearing REQUIRE MORE VESPENE GAS or REQUIRE MORE MINERALS.

While it is emphasized that it is important to build quickly, having a build plan maybe detrimental to your playing style as you would lack flexibility.

Multiplayer vs. Single-Player

The difference between playing humans and computers is that human players are often more intelligent and more resourceful than computers. Humans are also capable of using sneak attacks and building bases in places where you tend not to look.

CPUs however seem to love hitting you with a sledgehammer and puts bases and armies out in the spotlight. CPUs, are however better at micro and macro as they are omni present in the game, meaning they are able to execute strategies more efficiently.

Human Rivals

Think offensively, act fast.

To beat other human players, you must work quickly. Gather resources quickly, build quickly, scout early and out think/ out smart him. Expansion bases are critical, as an overrun base would not mean losing but rather just loosing a base where minerals and gas is running short.

Attack early and often, this stops players from fully developing their economies as they divert their attentions to defending their base.

"If there are times when you remain idle during the fight, you are doing something wrong."

Never stockpile resources, theres always ways to put them to good use. Build more structures to pump units out! If you are always waiting for resources, then develop your economy further.

Climb the technology tree and out build your enemy for the wins. In some games gaining control of the majority of the resources would win you the game as your enemy would have nothing to work with.

CPU Gameplay

Dealing with the computer, on the other hand, is a matter that may be approached much more deliberately, at least with respect to the campaign missions. While you will almost always be under pressure to set up your defense as quickly as possible, once you manage to produce enough units to hold your ground, you will likely have plenty of time to consider your next move. The general rule is, matches vs. human opponents stress offense, while matches vs. computer opponents stress defense. Keep this in mind.
