If you are currently with a free blogging platform because its easier to set up (you don't need your own domain or hosting) that is okay but there are a few things that make having your own self hosted Wordpress blog worthwhile.....

1. You own the domain - it is your virtual real estate! And like real estate to can build it into a business that will increase in value as the years go by.

2. It is far more professional and represents your business business.

3. You won't lose your work! I had a free blog and woke up one morning to a notice that said I had violated their terms and conditions. I had no idea what I had done and I lost all my posts. So if you are using free resources then back up!

4. More flexibility - you can do far more with your self-hosted Wordpress blog because of plug-ins (extra resources that plug in to your blog). Your site can look more like an online portal, a magazine or even a membership site.

5. More opportunity. You can sell your blog if you wanted to after a few years of building it up. Or you can make your living flipping blogs (creating them and then selling them)

6. You can invite guest bloggers - You don't have to do it all alone. You can set up your self hosted Wordpress blog to include other authors.

7. You get the traffic juice/love! When you send people to your blogger blog then blogger get the kudos. When you send people to your domain then your domain gets it instead. Why build up blogger or Xango or any of the other free platforms when you can be building your own domain!

The first step is to decide the area/industry/niche you want to work in. Research (and all my past training) has shown it is better to serve a big niche, attract new customers and sell more products/at a higher price to the same customers rather than continually work in small niches!

Starting your blog means knowing what to blog about - otherwise you find yourself lost for words! This is a crucial part of making money from blogging (if you want to do that) so miss it out at your peril!  You need to spend time researching what the problems are in your target market and then work out how you will be the person to solve those problems.  Then you decide how you are going to deliver what you will offer to your market (e.g. via a blog, membership site, ebay store etc)

Once your blog is setup there will be a few other things you will want to do like taking a minute to look round Wordpress and setup your spam account (so spam goes where it belongs - in the bin!)
