What Style to Study

Belly dance, or Oriental dance as it is properly called, is an art form which has developed through many different cultures. In the United States the most popular dance forms of belly dance have come from the cultures of the Middle East, Egypt, Turkey and Armenia. As belly dance evolves in the U.S. where diversity abounds, it can be difficult to distinguish the lineage of the performance style. In general there are several recognizable styles which can be described as American Restaurant, Egyptian Oriental and U.S. Tribal. The type of style you decide to study depends greatly on your taste, natural movement style and the teachers who are in your area. It's good to do some research about the history and styles of Belly Dance when first getting started. The information you gain will help you get into the flavor of the dance, and understand its cultural significance.

What to Wear to Belly Dance Class

Each teacher has different requirements. Some may require stricter dress than others. Most require some sort of dance wear like a leotard and at very least a hip scarf. A hip scarf is a sheer drape decorated with coins and beads which, when tied around the hips, makes noise and accentuates your movements. This is a very helpful piece of the belly dance costume to have when you're just starting out. Plus it's a lot of fun to wear. A full belly dance costume is not usually required when you are just beginning to learn, but if you decide to perform it's a must.

Find hip scarves, full costumes and much more on Amazon.

Learn Belly Dance at Home

A simple way to get started in the art of Belly Dance is to learn from a DVD at home. This may be less intimidating because no one is watching you and you can just let loose and have fun. Be aware that belly dance moves can be tricky, so when you get your confidence up invest in classes from a good teacher. A good teacher can keep you from hurting yourself and help you fine tune your moves. That said, you can still get the basics from a good DVD. And even if you are taking lessons, a DVD can help to reinforce your practice at home. Find belly dance DVD's on Amazon. Read reviews and pick just the right one to help you get started.
