If starting a bookstore is your dream, then here is a useful site for finding some tips you can use to get that dream off the ground and on its way to creating a successful bookshop business for you!
Starting a Bookstore Takes Time!
Here's the first tip: Allow yourself plenty of time to plan every detail. Don't dive in head first if you can't see the bottom. . .
the bottom line, that is!
Are you looking to open a bookshop to get away from the stress of working for someone else? Well, it is even more stressful to suddenly become solely responsible for the survival of your new business if you are not completely prepared to do so. You have lots to consider before you will be ready to welcome the first customer through the door.
Here's a list of some of the items you'll need to think about. Remember, it will take time to gather all of these details into a cohesive plan:
Are you looking to open a bookshop to get away from the stress of working for someone else? Well, it is even more stressful to suddenly become solely responsible for the survival of your new business if you are not completely prepared to do so. You have lots to consider before you will be ready to welcome the first customer through the door.
Here's a list of some of the items you'll need to think about. Remember, it will take time to gather all of these details into a cohesive plan:
- You will need to analyze the marketplace, and determine who your customers will be and how your bookstore will get them through the door and best serve them.
- You will need a place to set up shop. You'll need furnishings and fixtures for displaying your books. You may need building permits and inspections to create the space you want for your business. You'll need a business license.
- You will need inventory to sell, and perhaps employees to sell it. You'll need to decide what and who based on who your customers are.
- You'll need a realistic estimate of both income and expenditures. You'll need an operating budget.
- You will most likely need financing, or a private source of funding to get you through the start up period when you most likely won't see much money coming in.
- Finally, you'll need a business plan to pull it all together.
Good Advice Can Be Very Helpful When Starting a Bookstore
Tip Number 2: There's no need to reinvent the wheel or to stress over what details you should be investigating. Excellent guidance is available from those who have gone before you. . .
It can also be a bit overwhelming to consider all of the fact finding and research you will need to do in this phase. After all, if you have never started a business before, you may not even know what you don't know but need to find out!
One source I've discovered that is really helpful is this comprehensive guide called Become A Bookstore Owner. It is written by a woman who has spent much time gathering a lot of research not available online, and it includes passages from people who have successfully opened a profitable business doing something they love, selling books.
Writing a Business Plan is a Crucial Part of Starting a Bookstore
Here's another tip : Do your research, gather your ideas, then write it down. It's time to develop a business plan.
It will take time to pull of of your ideas together, but once you do, it's time to write.
Writing a business plan will help you organize all of the pieces of this puzzle together in a way that makes sense, and when you are finished, you will have clear picture as to the steps needed to open and run a bookstore.

Don't Forget To Plan For Taxes When Starting a Bookstore Business
They are a sure thing! Here's an important tip about planning for taxes:
Taxes will be a recurring monthly expense, and you absolutely must take this into account when starting a bookstore. Very early in the planning process, contact the IRS or an accountant and familiarize yourself with the tax code.
Confused about taxes?
One of these manuals may be just what you need to organize your tax strategy for your new bookstore.
Don't Quit Now: You are well on your way to Starting A Bookstore!
My last tip: Don't quit too soon. If you've made it this far, you are almost there!
You are almost ready for the fun stuff, like arranging the furniture, unpacking the books, and brewing the coffee. . .and making that first sale.
Although the planning needed is a bit mind boggling, the day you first hang your "OPEN" sign on the door of your new bookstore you'll know that it was all worth every thought you had to think and every word you had to write down to make it happen. Making a dream come true feels great, so if there are times when all the planning seems cumbersome and confusing, remember, there is help available!

- I used to be one of those people who thought I should open a bookstore...
until I really checked into everything that would be involved in running a real bricks-and-mortar storefront business.
I finally decided the best way for me to run my own bookstore was by listing my inventory of books online at Amazon.com and eBay. They bring me a lot more customers, with a lot less overhead than my little storefront ever could.
Now, my 'store' is open 24/7 and sells to customers around the world. And I can spend my time looking for more books to sell...
instead of sitting around in my storefront, waiting for someone to walk in the door.
