Defining the Sides: Star Trek Vs. Star Wars
Star Trek Vs. Star Wars
Science Fiction fans can generally be classified into two camps - 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek'.
'Trekkies' are often fans of using great restraint when possible and overwhelming in nature. Most of the aliens they meet look vaguely like humans* who had a bad experience with a wax factory.
Fans of Star Wars are gluttons for sci-fi punishment. They either love being the all-powerful evil being or the scrappy underdog. Trekkies are rarely underdogs. Star Wars aliens seem to have either scales or fur and are also roughly humanoid in nature*.
*Roughly human shapes for aliens are necessary or else conventions would be very boring.

Captain Kirk FTW! As much as I loved Star Wars IV,V and VI, the mere existence of I, II and III makes it hard for me to take George Lucas seriously ever again. Star Trek was hilariously campy when it began, because that was the style of the time, but it also delved into some interesting/serious topics.

Definately Star Trek. In comparisom, Star Wars seems like a bunch of froth--over-the-top special effects with no real depth. As someone mentioned that Star Treck has many references to literature and has greater depth of characters. I love the holideck also.
But, perhaps the main thing which influences my choice is my Christianity. Star Wars is based on Eastern mystical religion. God is replaced by "the force," which has its good and bad sides. This is entirely and Eastern concept. Of course I must admit that in some Star Trek episodes, the character of Q seems to be a God figure, although on closer examination, I feel he could as well be an angel or achangel. And God is mentioned in severlal Star Trek episodes. In the episode "Bread and Circuses," even "the Son" is mentioned, referring to Jesus. "It's not the sun in the sky, it's the Son s-o-n" And then Kirk says somethig like: "Yes, Ceasar and Christ--they had them both."

The differences between the two are implied in the titles themselves.
Wars: (action, over-the-top heroes, princesses/queens in distress, flashing lights, pop-corn fantasy)
Trek: (exploration, character development, pursuit of knowledge, intellectual/philosophical themes)
Star Wars has provided me with much fun but it could never compete with the much deeper satisfaction I gain from Trek.
I love how each of the Trek series has a musical theme to it: Uhura with the lyre and singing, Data and his violin, Harry Kim with the clarinet, the Doctor and 7 of 9 singing, Klingon operas, the singing of the genetically modified quartet (in DS9).
Also the Trek's many references to classical plays and literature, historical character, Trek has always endeavored to bring culture to people which is worthy of respect.
It has also inspired technological development (like automatic doors and cell phones), one episode of TNG even had Stephen Hawking on, how can you beat that? :)

Four easy ways for STAR TREK to destroy star wars.
1. Voyager with transphasyc torpedos. Fire 30 of them, the death star is destroyed.
2. Voyager with transphasyc torpedos and multiphasyc cloak. Cloak Voyager, go trought the death star in its core, decloak fire, cloak, warp.
(Or you can cloak a torpedo.)
3. 10 ships of species 8472. 9 of them fire at the one, and that one fire on the death star.
4. Q comes, snap his finger, and there is no more star wars.
The death star is dead!!!!
TREK IS THE BEST!!!

Just like everyone else here has mentioned, Star Trek is SciFi, while Star Wars is fantasy. Star Wars appeals to kids. It has a good premise, but at least the new trilogy was full of bad acting and WAY overdone special effects. Star Trek is a utopian future based in science. Science that is real NOW, and the technology of today. Star Wars uses techy words to make what it wants to accomplish happen. It sets up technology to make the story work. In Star Trek, the technology is part of the plot, the story, and its a much more organic evolution. Star Wars compares good and evil, black and white. Its very swashbuckling and noble, but its an opera. A drama. Star Trek explores the hope of a future where humans have figured out how to be a part of the universe, in harmony. Its about first contact, finding commonalities among markedly different beings and cultures. Finding out where we all came from. Its a broader, philosophical look at the human condition. Star Wars explores emotions, and good and evil, but it really never gets past its own characters. Star Wars in that sense is selfish, where Star Trek is all encompassing, universal. It is an explorer, and Star Wars is a hero, tragic, a drama. Taking all of that, Star Trek appeals to me. I have my Star Wars days, but Star Trek just takes my mind to the stars. Star Wars is an indulgent fantasy. Star Trek is a future, a viable future that I can work for. now.

I prefer Star Trek, because of the amazing psychological development of the characters and the overwelming amount of philosophical undertones in every episode.
I enjoy fantasy stories as much as the next person, but Star Wars dosen't do it for me. I admire Captian Piccard and Mr.Spock's use of intellect and logic over the balls out action that the heros of Star Wars provide.

dude are you stupid? you expect me to grab a stupid stick and play like that "star wars kid" in youtube? I'm sorry if i didn't make myself clear, the reason why i say star wars is like futurama is because star wars is fantasy and action. star trek on the other hand is more science based, and the fact that star wars stared with "long time ago in a galaxy far far away" doesn't help. also the fact that star wars never update itself as science and technology progress over the years also doesn't help. so don't give me the spec shit, it's more like you telling me your damn pentium 2 is 10ghz, if you are like star trek and say pentium 4 at 5ghz atleast it's more plausible. the "religious capital ship" you guys love so much does look like a sea-ship with rocket tubes on the back, ask anyone with eyes. anyways i watch star trek for the science and philosophy of it. if i want to watch a adtion movie i'll watch new blockbusters and if i want fantasy that is stupid i watch futurama or family guy. i dont' have anything star trek actually other than what i've learned. have fun with your battery powered stick though, i'm out.

reply to question 1-6, star wars is not even science fiction. since you guys so good at looking at specs maybe you guys should watch futurama and be like "oh no way", it "owns" or like "yeah dude" then like some "it rocks"? i mean atleast they don't attach rocket tubes to a 1980's destroyer and enlarge it and call it a space ship, and 1 more thing is the stupid laser tubes from the stormtroopers. lasers don't shoot in tubes, it's a beam. also most star wars guy will be like oh my laser gun in my issd is like sooooooo powerful. how you suppost to generate that much energy from that small gun, or that stupid 1980's nuclear reactor. atleast make it like a array to focus multiple guns like star trek. oh and so hyperdrive takes a ship into hyper space which a ship can go at anyspeed because the space is "unique", so once is in their rockets will propell them. i personally don't take any of these bullcrap, i swear even futurama's "space moves instead of the ship" makes more sense. but then again what do you expect from a longgggg timeeeeeee ago in a galaxy farrrr farrrrrrrr awayyyyyyyyy.

Star wars is like a a whole bunch of fantacy fanatics, the ship they worship is like a normal distroyer with pointing out guns but added a few rocket tubes at the back. Funny thing they never explian how their 1950's nuclear reactor powers all that stuff, and how a small laser gun can generate the massive power they advertise. Atleast don't be stupid and make it like star trek's phaser array, since is physically impossible to generate that much power through a small laser gun it make sense to gather generators focus it and make it into a array. But i suppost they will throw at me some futurama specs soon?

Star wars barely makes any sense whatsoever! I mean, the lightsabers, the dark side, blasters, lightsabers, the force....its just so ridiculous. And childish too. Star wars is just...overdone...
Star wars is barely even science fiction compared to star trek. Star wars is more like a mythological sort of thing.
Most of the star wars ships are made up of fighters...which is nothing compared to star trek.
The plot and story in star wars is even more ridiculous than the other aspects of it. Starwars is pretty much just a fairy tale.

Star Trek Kicks So Much @$$, it's unbelievable. simply put, star wars can't compete. (Not judging by the last 3 star wars films anyway) The last time star wars put out anything of even the smallest merit was more than twenty years ago, while star trek has kept going strong with series after series including the underrated series "Enterprise" and most recently Star Trek XI, the greatest sci-fi story ever put onto film. And as for the whole lightsaber thing, im under the impression that while it might protect against a hand phaser, it wouldn't stand a chance against, say, ship board phasers or a single photon torpedo. so suck on that.

Star Wars is fantasy. Star Trek is science fiction. Comparing the two is a false dichotomy. My personal take is attributed with these two distinctions clearly at it's base. The older I get the more I enjoy Star Trek. That being said as a youth in the 1980's Star Was was clearly something I watched, imitated and worshiped. It is ultimately a choice based on what is dearer to your heart Fantasy or Science Fiction. One is a double cheeseburger of fantasy with a slice of science fiction. The other it's polar opposite.
Claiming that either is superior is just an exercise in futility

Check out this list I made:1: the empire has the death star, but the cardassians made the star imploder, which is, obviously capable of destroying entire star systems.
2: look, i dont care how big a star wars fleet is, if you've ever seen any part of the dominion war, its a no brainer.
3: its obvious that hyperdrive goes at light speed. In star trek, thats warp 1. now, most star trek ships can go about warp 9.2 to 9.7, tops. that is at least 1649 times faster than the millenium falcon, supposedly really fast in star wars.
4: species 8472. if you haven't seen the voyager episode "scorpion", watch it, and you'll see what power they have over any star wars ship.
5: do you really think that 1 man fighters stand any chance against a ship like enterprise? or any star trek ship? that makes most star wars ships USELESS in combat.
6: this last one is better than anything, it makes the whole battle trivial and predecided. 2 words... The Q! one snap of their fingers, one little thought and BOOM! all the star wars ships are gone, vanished, erased from existance. not even the precious force wouldn't stand a chance against the mighty power of the Q! geek-girl says:
I definetly like Star Wars, nothing wrong with it. But more for just a good night with popcorn and coke, when I feel like watching any cool action movie. Star Trek runs so much deeper; there's far more technology in it, more science, more character-development, (and therefore better real-life characters, no cliché's) more emotions and more psychology.
For every alien shown has a reference, a background. Aliens are not just put around because they look cool, like "hey, we have a bar-scéne here... let's put some fluffy creatures here for background decoration". And the amount of fluffy aliens in Star Wars is way too much! I get so much a Jim Henson-allergie when I watch too much Star Wars at once... especially episode VI, Return of the Jedi... the last 45 minutes, skip, please, skip! On the other hand, I absolutely love Yoda, especially in the original episodes. He's cool, funny, charismatic, adorable and wise. But that Han Solo, throw him out of the first air lock, I've never seen a more arrogant, irritating, self-loving macho, iiiiiiehw. (Yes, I'm a girl. And if I we're prinses Leia I would've slapped him in the face)
So... Star Wars is more for the action, the fighting, the cool-looking characters (love Vaders cape), the cute fluffy aliens and isolated, hot burning or freezing cold planets.
Star Trek is more for the science, technology, good storylines, emotions, exotic beautiful paradise-like planets (count me in for a trip to Risa) and, well, let's face it... better equiped starships. Laserbeams vs Photon Torpedo's... need I say more?

http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/ is all stupidity. The facts are right towards the canon, but most of the Star Wars canon is impossible. Besides even going by that fact, all the star trek people have to do is beam the command crew off the bridge of an enemy ship, drop a few borg aboard, and that's it for that ship. Star wars would fail completely. So in an actual war, Star Wars might have the numbers and the power (so they say) but Star Trek has the brain. Besides, in that website's theoretical situation, a Wormhole has opened. The Federation know very well how to close a wormhole, and with that, problem solved.
Star Trek is for the mind, Star Wars is for the mindless.

Yikes.
John, I just re-read the post I made on August 8, and realized you thought that last paragraph(about puttng on the Spock ears, grabbing the lightsaber, etc.)was directed to you personally, when in fact *that* part was intended for any other people who might be reading all this and thinking, "what a couple of nerds". I should have clarified that better.
*headdesk*
As for the rest, it's all good You prefer Trek, I prefer Wars. No reason to let that difference spiral into a flame-fest; it's just too silly. So disregard my previous snarkiness, and Trek on.

To "John" and "v00"(who I suspect are one and the same)on August 7, 2009:
1. Right. Star Wars is merely set in space, and features spaceships and aliens. Nothing "science fiction" about that.
2. Futurama? Who said anything about Futurama?
3. Attach rocket tubes to 1980s sea-going warships, enlarge them, and call them spaceships? Tee Hee. I leave the awful, *painful* absurdity of that statement to speak for itself.
4. As you correctly pointed out, the characteristics of Star Wars rayguns bear no resemblance to lasers, therefore they *aren't* lasers, whatever label is slapped on them. If someone decided to call a modern M-16 assault rifle a 'musket', would that mean the M-16 is really a primitive, single-shot, 18th century black powder firearm? The word 'turbolaser' could simply be an outdated, 'holdover' term that has continued in use long after its actual relevance fades. After all, it's not uncommon to hear people talk about 'cranking their cars' or 'cranking up their music' even though cars and music players haven't had manual cranks for eons.
5. You generate that much power in a small gun by having highly advanced technology. To borrow a timeless quote from Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Besides, if we step *outside the sandbox* and look at things from a real-world standpoint, is it any more realistic to show Star Trek hand phasers supposedly capable of disintegrating people? Little, if any, of the exotic technology seen in either Trek *or* Wars is even remotely feasible in real life.
6.Star Wars power plants aren't "1950s/1980s nuclear reactors". They are described in official literature as 'hypermatter reactors', whatever that may mean. Besides, as with #4, capabilities are more important than labels. Even if they *were* described as traditional nuclear reactors, that is easily refuted by direct observation. They don't look or act like 20th century nuclear fission reactors, therefore they *arent* 20th century nuclear fission reactors.
7. Star Wars capital ships are studded with independent gun batteries from bow to stern, which can be coordinated to fire on a single target, or used to fire on multiple targets simultaneously. If you "channel all your guns into a single array" then that single array can be knocked out by a single hit, which we've seen happen to Trek ships on more than one occasion.
8. Your description of how hyperdrive works actually sounds a lot more like how 'subspace propulsion' is described to work in Star Trek.
By the way, I'm sure at this point *many* people are rolling their eyes and saying "get a life", or "its not real", or "what a bunch of pathetic geeks", etc. But if you are here, reading this, it's too late. YOU ARE ONE OF US. Don't deny it. Come out of the closet. Embrace your inner nerd, put on your Spock ears, grab your plastic lightsaber, and JOIN THE DARK SIDE!! Everybody needs a good dose of silliness once in a while. I promise...we won't tell on you. :)

This is a reply to the post made by "Liamo 14" on July 4, 2009, in which he lists six reasons why he thinks Trek is superior. You might want to read that one first, so you'll know what I'm replying to.
1. And of course, as we all know, this mysterious "star imploder" saved the day for the Cardassians during the Dominion War, allowing them to effortlessly crush their foes and emerge as the supreme, undisputed power in the galaxy, right? Oh, wait! Never mind, I forgot...that didn't happen, did it?
2.So it is a "no-brainer" that the Feddies and their little playmates would easily handle fleets of kilometer-long star destroyers, swarms of fighters, and Executor-class command ships the size of Manhattan Island? I had no idea Star Trek was so tough. But of course, this begs the question of why a fleet of forty Starfleet vessels got their buttocks handed to them by a single Borg cube at Wolf 359, doesn't it?
3.Wrong. You obviously base this claim on Han Solo's comment that the Falcon can travel ".5 factors past lightspeed" and have taken this to mean 1.5 c; however, the travel times in Star Wars are invariably depicted as a matter of hours or days, even when travelling between core and rim worlds. Because of the vast distances of interstellar space, this is manifestly *impossible* without speeds which are many tens of thousands, if not *millions* of times faster than lightspeed. Clearly, whatever ".5 factors past lightspeed" means, it *cannot* be a paltry one-and-a-half times c, and just as clearly, Star Wars ships would run rings around Trek ships. If you're still not convinced, watch Voyager. How long did it take them to get back home? Seven *years*, I believe?
4.YGBSM! The "organic" bio-ships of Species 8472, pitted against fleets of mammoth kilometer-long warships and hordes of fighters carrying missiles, bombs, and torpedoes? Can you say...'squish' ?
5.Do *you* really think that the Enterprise, or any other Trek ship, would stand a chance when confronted by *hordes* of those "1-man fighters" launching missiles, bombs, and torpedoes from all directions, which the Trek ships would be all but helpless to stop because they have virtually no fighters of their own?
6.Ah, yes. The Q. And obviously, the Q Continuum would surely come rushing to the rescue, just like they did against the Borg, and the Dominion, and the...oh, wait; I'm sorry, I forgot. The Q *didn't* rush to the rescue during any of those crises, did they? Whatever their powers may be, the Q are *hardly* a band of gallant knights in shining armor; if anything, they have come close to destroying humanity with some of their past antics.
You say you have 'a lot more' reasons why Trek is superior, but if they're all of this caliber, maybe you'd better just keep them under your hat. You *sure* you're not a warsie in disguise? :)

The Star Forge could produce a massive amount of Leviathens/Star destroyers and grunt fighters they all would eventually take the enterprise down. Exar Kun (the greatest Jedi who ever lived) would easily take the enterprise down by himself his lightsaber is made of life itself and i know it would be able to block a puny phaser toy gun Our shapeshifting species would also easily disguise himself as one of your trekkies. Boba fett would also deafeat captain picard and his whole crew and yes boba fett is still alive so if you are a trekkie who thought he died in the sarlacc no hes still alive a simple jawa would embaress data by shooting him with his stun gun used on droids/robots. STar trek Everyday technology(replicators, Holodecks, teleporting) could Change STar wars universe into a more peaceful position. only few Star wars techs would help Star trek like Droids. Droids have unique feel. Like DATA but they are more DIVERSE. That would Shake up things. I Realy hope that there Would be a DRoid planet in Delta Quantrant.

I prefer the story and technology of Star Wars more than Star Trek. I honestly could never get into ST as a kid because of how boring it was. Yes, at first that seems to support the "SW is all bells and whistles, ST has all the meat" argument, but that's not correct as what drew me into SW was the story. There was really peril for the heroes, and a good sense of morals. They were fighting oppression and annihilation, not just skipping about the galaxy and constantly running into trouble (which is how I saw Trek as a kid).
That said, I can appreciate both franchises, and I don't get upset when someone says Trek is better than Wars. It's all opinion, nothing more. What matters is that we all have a Star, be it Wars or Trek, that brings us entertainment and a good set of lessons.

Star Wars. Star Trek is to boring with the exception of the movie. The Star Wars novels, comics, games, movies, and both the animated series were much better in every possible way then Star Trek. Star Trek is unoriginal unlike Star Wars were they mix it up with the story line (or story lines if you've played one or both of the KOTOR games) and with their aliens. Plus, it's more in depth with the technology, character bios, fighting styles, actual fights, and just everything ion general. It's as if whoever make Star Trek did it in a half hour as if it wasn't half-assed enough

While star trek is about the federation and more about the enterprise. Neither one is better or worse but i will say this if you put a hudred borg in with one jedi they wouldn't last i mean come on people the borg couldn't last against a regular human being let alone a jedi? oh by the way you should watch fan boys. by the way im a fan of both!

Because it provides a much more compelling drama and myth cycle than Star Trek. Star Trek's vision of a galaxy filled with creatures that look exactly like humans with various and sundry facial ridges was always a bit off-putting to me. Don't get me wrong, I like Star Trek but Star Wars just has all the right ingredients for a compelling space opera. Even the "mystical force" is a plus for me, though it puts Star Wars much more into the realm of Science Fantasy than hard Science Fiction. I mean.. who doesn't want to be a Jedi!
For those that tear down SW's for it's lack of "science" I beg them to look into more of the literature, Star Wars has some basis in potential technologies of the future just as Star Trek with it's Treknology.
In the end, the original trilogy and expanded universe novels kept my young mind churning with fantastic lightsaber duels and daring space battles in a way that Captain Jean-luc Picard never did.
p.s. All respect to Captain Jean-luc Picard though, he's a damn cool dude!

I'm going to choose Star Wars but only because of the original trilogy. Those three movies gave me so much fun. I must have watched them dozens of times when I was a kid. Enough to wear out two sets of VHS, anyway. The prequels were garbage, IMO. Even ROTS. They were all boring and had some of the stiffest and underwhelming acting I have ever had the displeasure of watching.
With that said, I still love Star Trek as well. I'm not going to get into that silly stuff like, "Jedi's haev teh force so they would beat star track!1" because it's beyond inane. Just as pure entertainment I'd say they're both amazing. The SW OT just nudges ahead by a small margin, for me. But if the Trek franchise continues the way it has with the new Abrams film, that might change in the future. That movie was full of epic win.

Trekkie technology is way more outdated than Star Wars, for example, to destroy a planet , the death star needs minimal preparation, while the Klingons need to lower down an anchor, and go through a lengthy process which can easily be stopped at any time. Plus Jedi can use the force, while Kirk and others can only use basic instinct, and "time travel", which seems kind of unnecessary.
