Financial Freedom and Freedom from Your Business
Most small businessmen end up being slaves to their business. They cannot take a few weeks vacation, let alone take off for a year - or the business would fall apart. Yet, it should be your goal to build a business in such a way, that you don't have to be personally involved in day-to-day operations. Unfortunately, most of us, including most MBAs, are taught how to work in an already existing business - but are not taught how to create a brand new business structure. First book on the list - E-Myth Revisited - is written from the perspective of building a business system that will allow the owner not to be involved in daily operations - to own the business, yet be free from that business. If you want to build or buy a business, this may very well be the most important book in your life.

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It
Learn to build a business that supports you - the owner, not the other way around. Unique perspective, rarely mentioned
even in the best MBA programs. Learn to work ON your business, not IN your business. If you read only 1 business book - this is the one.
The E-Myth Manager: Why Most Managers Don't Work and What to Do About It
E-Myth Revisited looked at the business from the perspective of the owner. E-Myth Manager is a look from the perspective of a manager working within the structure set up by the owner. Great for getting a better understanding of how the managers need to act in your business. It's also great for managers who work for others - it will radically improve the way you manage - and what you manage.
The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
Practical application of the ideas in the E-Myth - taking advantage of the 21st century technology - including personal outsourcing. And funny too.
How to Buy a Great Business With No Cash Down
If you ever wanted to own a business - either to build one or to buy one - this one is for you. It will stretch your mind and give you mental flexibility that you have not thought possible before. I have read it and re-read it over the years. Truly a classic.
Starting on a Shoestring: Building a Business Without a Bankroll
If you haven't been blessed with a large trust account in your name, yet still want to own a business, you should read this book.
While it's primarily about retail businesses, the principles of cash flow management and conserving resources - and their practical applications - will be useful for anybody starting a business.

Internet Business
As a matter of fact, it's easier than ever to start a small business on the internet.
There are of course million books on how to do it.
You have already seen one - The 4 Hour Work Week -
but that stuff is actually pretty advanced.
For a more introductory, yet very practical text,
I can't think of a better book than Yanik Silver's
"Moonlighting on the Internet".
It shows 5 different internet businesses that anybody can build - with detailed examples and case studies. He is not promising you overnight riches - but once you get started, each could generate a solid income, and they would reinforce each other.
More important, from my perspective, you can start each one with very little capital.
If you want to start a business that has a potential to free you from the rat race, yet, like me, you are chicken about quitting your day job - get this book, pick a business that appeals most to you and get going.
