A Brief History Of Star Wars Holiday Merchandise

If you live in North America, you know Star Wars. The first Star Wars movie was produced by George Lucas in the 1970s and the popularity of the franchise has grown ever since.

Six live-action and one animated movie later, Star Wars is a huge pop culture phenomenon around the world and, of course, the incredible popularity of these movies has helped spawn some great items for Star Wars collectors.

Until 1996, Star Wars Christmas-themed items were simply not available. The two holiday items that had been produced were "Holiday Special" a television show that aired in November of 1978 and "Christmas in the Stars" a record that was released in 1980. Neither of those productions was successful so Star Wars fans would have to wait awhile before having the opportunity to collect holiday-themed items.

A lot changed after 1995. Star Wars holiday-themed items appeared. Star Wars fans now have their pick of decorations with which to adorn their Christmas trees and homes. Manufacturers like Hallmark, Christopher Radko, Rawcliffe, Hasbro and Kurt S. Adler all produce interesting Star Wars memorabilia.

For some, one item will do as an indication of their love of Star Wars. Others, however, are working at building a complete collection. The wonderful assortment available today allows you to celebrate the holiday season in true Star Wars style!

Please do not forget to rate this page with the star system at the top and to leave your comments at the bottom. I look forward to reading your answers to my polls and duels! Unfortunately, I do not have any Star Wars Christmas items listed in my eBay store but I do usually have some other Star Wars items. Be sure to check them out at Treasures By Brenda.

Star Wars Movie Box Office Rankings

Just how popular are the Star Wars movies? Episode IV: A New Hope, released in May, 1977, is the all-time number 3 movie in box office rankings in North America. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released in May, 1999, is the all-time number 7 movie in box office rankings in foreign markets. Quite an accomplishment!

What do you think about Star Wars on your Christmas tree? Is it too commercial for you?

I love Star Wars and I think it is appropriate for Christmas.

Joan4 says:

I am happy to add anything the grandchildren want -- and this year, they have discovered StarWars - so yes, yoda will be on my tree!

MarketPipeline says:

I would love to have these but my wife would never go for it.

says:

It already is.

kab says:

It's all in good fun. I woulden't want an entirely Star Wars Christmas, but a fun ornament never hurt anyone.

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

Because our Christmas tree is an eclectic mix of ornaments gathered over the years which reflect our interests and travels, I think one or two Star Wars ornaments would be appropriate. It was, after all, a movie that was very exciting to the boys growing up in our house! So I am going to choose 'I think it is appropriate for Christmas' even though I would not want a tree decorated entirely with Star Wars ornaments!

I think it is too commercial to be a part of Christmas celebrations.

lisadh says:

I don't think it's too commercial, but it just doesn't say Christmas to me. Give me a snowman or angel over a wookie any day!

The 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special - Happy Life Day!

Here you have it, the two-hour Star Wars Holiday Special condensed down to just five minutes!

The Star Wars Holiday Special was a two-hour show set in a galaxy far, far away which aired on November 17, 1978. In this story, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Chewbacca's home world and celebrate Life Day. They are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire searching for rebels on the planet.

In variety show format, this special features visits from many of the Star Wars characters, an introduction to three of Chewbacca's family members and numerous celebrity guests including Jefferson Starship, Diahann Carroll, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Bea Arthur.

It is said that George Lucas was never pleased with the production and so the show has never been officially released in any format. Despite that fact, it has managed to become a cult phenomenon. The original print is held in the Lucasfilm archives and the show is available to us today only because someone who watched it in 1978 took the time to record it on Betamax or VHS. The only copies available today are bootleg versiouns that have been duplicated over and over again.

Because copies are bootleg, I have resisted buying a copy online to share with the Star Wars fans in my family. However, online file sharing now makes it possible to view pieces of this show including this much edited five-minute segment. I find it harder to resist now, so here it is, a small introduction -- finally a peek into that 'secret' galaxy far, far away. Perhaps George Lucus should have released this film years ago...
