HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Star Wars v Star Trek

This is the quintessential argument for anyone born between about 1960 and 1980. It's a bigger problem than simply Star Wars v. Star Trek -- it's nuanced including sub arguments such as Star Wars original trilogy v. Star Trek TOS or the Star Wars universe v. the Star Trek universe, etc.

Since the argument is so completely nuanced and complex, I open the debate to all forms of the argument and take a complex nuanced stance myself. As for me, the original trilogy of Star Wars is the best set of movies, but the Star Trek TNG series is the best overall space sci-fi series. If Lucas hadn't destroyed Star Wars by making prequels, this debate would have been simpler, but as it is, there is much to consider.

Tell me what YOU think.

Star Wars is better

ipalsyoutube says:

star wars is the best movie ever.

Chylerreck says:

NERD, that wasnt a fair test.

What about this: Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer Chimaera (powerful, at 1.6 km long) and a fleet of TIE Bombers and Fighters (Twin Ion Engine)
or Enterprise and (whatever star trek has for fighters)

Face it, Star Wars Society is about 200,000 years old-Earth is long forgotten.

Star Trek is a weaker, younger civilization.

Star Wars is also realistic.

Star Wars portrays things as they wouldmost likely happen in reality.

A nerd doesnt mean you like either of these. A nerd is a cruel term for one who doesn't owe any fault to society, right NERD?

And I'm not here to make anyone feel bad or angry--let the people decide, ok?

smiley says:

The prequels are all right, if you are a true fan and look at them the right way.

a person (I think) says:

Star Wars is the essential American mythology, it teaches us an actual moral story, and everyone can relate to it.

:D says:

Yeah, right on

Star Wars has a realistic story, that if we all listen to it, we can all relate to it. (opinion)

Star Trek is too militaristic, with little to no ordinary society. (fact)

Star Wars does explain itself and it's technology, ever look at wookieepedia? (fact)

Star Trek is better

Chuck Welch says:

Star Trek is the quintessential American mythology.

NERD says:

Star Trek is better:
Star Trek's UFP (United Federation of Planets) has more allies, enemies, and well, more science and tech.

Star Trek Enemies
Borg

(sometimes) Klingon

Romulans

Themselves

Other...various

Star Wars Enemies
Sith

Bounty Hunters

Jabba the Hutt

Also they have more advanced technonlogy (Phasers, tricorders, warp engines). The goals are more realistic, and there is no fantasy-like mysterious "Force", indistinguishable by name.

Also, what would win the Enterprise-E a powerful experienced, shielded , fast starship, or a bunch of random X-wings, weak, low shielding, unexperienced, and slow starship??

The Death Star is too powerful to exist without blowing itself up when firing, and if the engineers were experts, they would create no weakness. Warp is actually explained in Star Trek.

triathlontraining says:

I'd have to go with Star Trek for best overall as far as the series comparing to the Star Wars movies.

However, the original trilogy of Star Wars was better than any one or two Star Trek movies. *I think the Voyager series could have made a good movie, but it's too late now.

Topgunmommy says:

Most defeniatley Star Trek is the best! Having been born in the 50's, I got hooked on Scifi watching Buck Rodgers --don't ask Who? if its before your time, but it's a hulodeck program on Voyager! First of all- I couldn't help but notice the posts from Trek fans are longer then the posts from SW fans --Guess that means we're more eloquent!
Second; Star Trek is more realistic--easier to relate to for us Earth-bound folk --easier for us to dream of making the future a reality!
Thirdly: there have been hundreds of technological advances over the last 40 years that were a direct result of Star Trek inspirations. ie: flip-open cell phones="Beam me up Scotty!"
Can't say the same for SW!
Fourth: the characters in Star Trek are real -- have very human qualities and humour --even the Vulcans!
Finally: Star Trek will never end -the fans will see to that -- but mostly because we will grow into it! --SciFi will become reality! Much of it already has--how many of you have a BlackBerry - a computer the fits in the palm of your hand. In fact most of the Science fiction techonology on the original Star Trek is now obsolete!
Just my opinion -- But I do like the fact that I can sit with my college-aged sons and enjoy watching Star Trek movies over and over again- which we do about once a year at least!

Rae says:

Wow. Tough choice for me. I didn't discover Star Trek until it went into syndication, and Star Wars hit right when I fell into the impressionable age of 12-13ish. My choice of what to watch depends a lot on my moods, but over all I gusee I would choose Star Trek more often. It seems to have held up better, and had more staying power, as evidenced by the rather lackluster reception of the Star Wars prequels. Of the movies my favorite is "The Voyage Home" (#4), but I will willingly watch "First Contact" just for the music. Simply beautiful. I find it interesting that the TOS movies are usually identified but the number, and TNG movies by name. My fvorite series? ENTERPRISE!!! Tripp or Reed, Reed or Tripp. Decisions, decisions. :D
