May The Force Be With You (And Mickey, Too)

Star Wars Weekends is a yearly Star Wars-centric celebration that takes place at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios.

Normally held in May, the event has been moved to June - which is, of course, a much "warmer" time of the year for Florida. This lens will provide you with some tips on how to get the most out of Star Wars Weekends and Disney World as well.

What Happens at Star Wars Weekends?

Star Wars Weekends isn't your normal fan convention. In fact, it really can't even be called a fan convention. For while Star Wars fans will definitely have a blast, the setting makes it easy for anyone to enjoy.

Star Wars Weekends consists of the characters of Star Wars taking over Disney Hollywood Studios (previously Disney-MGM Studios). There are parades, shows, trivia, special merchandise and celebrity appearances. It's loads of fun and if you're a Star Wars fan, it's a blast. If you're a Star Wars fan AND a Disney fan, it's an explosion of fun. Wow, was that cheesy or what?

Star Wars Weekends Dates - 2008

June 6, 2008 - June 8, 2008
June 13, 2008 - June 15, 2008
June 20, 2008 - June 22, 2008
June 27, 2008 - June 29, 2008

Star Wars Weekends admission is included with your regular park admission. There's no extra tickets to buy.

Celebrity Appearances - 2008

Celebrity appearances are subject to change without notice. Though, generally, they usually come through. Not all celebrity appearances have been announced yet.

Warwick Davis will be present all weekends of the event.
  • July 13-15 - Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Dave Prowse (Darth Vader)
  • June 20-22 - Matt Wood (General Grievous)
  • July 27-29 - Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett)

Must-Sees at Star Wars Weekends

There are a number of activities at Star Wars that you simply must see. These range from the cool to the all out cheesy, but they are all in the "must see and do" list.
  • Star Wars Parade - This parade begins at the entrance of the park and proceeds to the Star Tours area. Near the Star Tours area, the characters pose for a very cool photo op.
  • Hyperspace Hoopla - Cheesy, but oh-so-fun, this show that takes place at the end of the day allows guests to mingle with their favorite characters in an all out party fit for everyone.
  • Meet Darth Vader - Darth Vader is always ready for his close-up in an air-condition (hallelujah) area that allows guests to get their photo taken with the Dark Lord of the Sith.
  • Jedi Training Academy - This challenge allows younger Jedis to get their lightsaber on. However, you'd be amazed at how much fun this is to watch at any age. Some of the kids get *really* into it.

Should You Come in Costume?

While you will see many fans dressed up, you will see just as many who come in regular attire. You will also see plenty of fans wearing Star Wars apparel such as Star Wars t-shirts, caps, etc.

The thing to keep in mind is, obviously, the hot Florida sun. While it was always hot in May, the festivities have since been moved to June and it's that much hotter.

However, it's all about fun. Just keep in mind the temperatures when choosing your costumes and be prepared to take breathers and precautions so you won't overheat.

Because of the heat, many extensive make-up jobs can become somewhat runny. However, there are also make-up artists on hand that can (for a price) do your Star Wars make-up for you.

How To Keep Cool

  • Keep hydrated with water, juice, etc.
  • Pace yourself. If possible, plan your events over the course of a weekend so you don't have to rush and can take breaks.
  • If you feel yourself becoming too hot, step inside a shop or restaurant or even a less popular attraction (sometimes The Great Movie Ride provides a great reprieve from the heat).
  • Wear sunscreen.
