The 50 State Quarters
program is the release of a series of commemorative coins by the United States Mint. Between 1999 and 2008, it is featuring each of the 50 individual U.S. states on unique designs for the reverse of the quarter and in 2009 will feature the District of Columbia and the nation's five territories.

The 50 State Quarters program was originally created to raise historical consciousness. It quickly became the most successful numismatic program in history, with roughly half of the U.S. population collecting the coins. Coin Collecting, specifically the US State Quarters
, are still hot as far as collectors are concerned. State Quarters are one of the most popular collectibles to come along in years and this non-fad collectible appeals to every age, gender and income group.

In early 2000, Market research by the U.S. Mint indicated that 106 million Americans were collecting the new coins. In April 2006, according to the US Mint, the numbers have grown to 140 million collectors.

The 50 State Quarters
Program Act became law in December 1997, paving the way for five new State Quarter designs every year through 2008. Each quarter will be produced in limited quantity during 10 week intervals and each will bear a reverse design honoring the state's unique history and traditions.

Quarters minted in 2000 are the most plentiful with almost six and a half million produced that year. The Iowa Quarter, Philadelphia mint, had the lowest production run of 213,800,000 coins, while the Virginia Quarter minted in Philadelphia had a whopping run of 943,000,000.
