Everyday as a Stay at Home Parent

Lets get this party started!

First and foremost,it is ESSENTIAL to create and maintain a routine. Children thrive on routine. If a parent is always surprising their child with variations on their daily activities then the child is constantly having to adjust to new things,at a time when they are already haveing to adjust to their changing bodies and minds.I'm not saying by any means not to expose children to new, exciting, and most importantly, educational things.Children need to be challenged to aid in mental, physical AND emotional development. However, the challenge should not extend to guessing when their fundamental needs will be met. Save surprises for birthdays and Christmas. They should usually know what to expect.

Secondly, make sure you allot time for learning even if it is only for a few minutes, several times a day. I typically make sure to use educational time before nap and bedtime. STUDIES It seems like post sleep from education allows what your child has learned to absorb.

Third, NAP. Nap is a sore subject in many households. I'm sure that many of you have experienced tantrums, arguments, etc. when it comes to naptime as have I. Just remember that this should be the most routine thing each day next to meals and bedtime. There should never be a compromise unless you are away from home. Sometimes this is inevitable. You may experience crankiness during this time afterwhile if you are out of routine for a day or even a few hours during the nap period but it is truly a small price to pay next to your daily routine running smoothly. Naps should NEVER be up for negotiation.

Now that these staples are in place, lets start a list of things that you can do to occupy much of your child's time throughout the day.

In no particular order...

  • Swimming lessons - Your child and even you can never have to many swimming lessons. Swimming

  • Dancing - Find some fun music that both you and your child can enjoy and dance with them. This time with your child is priceless for many reasons such as excercise and bonding. (A great oppuritunity to be silly.)

  • Get Down - Get down on your child's level as much as possible. Play cars, army, barbie or whatever keeps your child's interests thriving. Afterall, children are not born with the knowledge of how each toy works. Teach them to play.

  • Alone Time - Each child could benefit from some alone time. This is a time for child and parent to reflect.

  • Reading - Age appropriate books are made to satisfy intersts of children. Rotate a few age appropriate books. Weed out books that do not interest your child and share books often that do. Even at a younger then average reading age, children have the capacity to recognize words that are regularly shown to them. STUDIES

  • Creative Time - Even if you have less than poor ability to draw or color, it is important to do activities like this with your youngen. STUDIES

These are only a few ideas to allowing you to plan out an exciting day with your children. As you continue to progress in different activities, you will open new arenas for you and your child to explore. Be consistant, and always find time to laugh."

Books Can Mean a Brighter Future

Age appropriate books are a great way to bond with your child and educate them at the same time. Children thrive off of the bonding experience that is shared between a parent and a child when you read to him or her.
It is of the utmost importance to stay within age appropriate content. for example, I read "Peep and The Big Wide World" books to my children and they are perfect for children of all ages. The colors are simple, the shapes are bold and geometric. Everything is simple except the level of educational information a child can gain from watching this show. The kind and soothing voice of Joan Cusack adds a sweetness to the show.
Education is one of the most important things you can offer your young children. Sign up for Upromise to help pay for post secondary education. We can't always rely on scholarships and loans have to be paid back. It's pretty simple what to do here.

Toys that Teach

Get Down

Toys that teach can not be pushed over to a child and abracadabra, they know how it works. Remember that unless you direct the younger child to follow the instructions the machine is verbalizing, then as far as they are concerned, they have a noise box with lots of crazy lights and music. That is not to say they won't catch on but let's get serious here. You need to guide your child through life a lot to begin with. eventually, from your guidance, their autonomy level will increase and all of the education you have been pushing on them, they will actually seek.

Pets

My wifes belief on how to instill compassion

When a child has a pet, there are so many valuable things that can effect your child. STUDIES A child that loves a family pet growing up is more likely to develope a more compassionate heart. I know this first hand. My 3 year old is the most compassionate person I have ever met. He is caring for animals, as well as people when they show emotion consistant with sadness. He has always been a great shoulder to cry on and it is my belief that it stems from our plethora of animals and his involvement in their lives. STUDIES

The MOST Important Thing

Love. These little ones will grow so fast that you do not know what hit you. Be careful of the things you inadvertantly teach your child.

  • Watch the potty mouth around them. They almost overhear better then they directly hear so be sure to watch your mouth even if you can not see your child.
  • Dont take the easy way out. Giving your child EVERYTHING they want in actuality is taking away a sense of value. Everything from that perspective is theirs. This subtracts a need to earn

My disclaimer

just so you know...

The only expertise I have on the subject is the fact that I have been raising my 2 boys for the last 2 years. When I started, there was only one boy at the ripe old age of 10 months. Now he is almost 3 and I have another that will be 11 months in about a week. We have been through teething, bumps, bruises, crawling, walking and back to crawling again while the big one tears through the house with a gigantic dog. Today is completely different then it was for me the day I began these responsibilities. I love every single minute of it and would not change what I have the gift of doing for all of the money in the world.

Great Stuff on eBay

Why pay full price when you can choose what you pay

Kids are ever growing, moving from 3-9 mo. to 9-12 mo. clothes. It hardly seems reasonable to buy EVERYTHING brand new, OR just at full price, that is why I get a lot of my kids things from yardsales, and ebay. Aaaaah, just try it out. You will find some of your more expensive items at a much better value.
