Personality Types Are Languages

One day, on the phone, my friend asks, "so you're telling me he's a dominant personality?"

"Yes!" I replied.

Oh man, I wish I knew from day one. No wonder he is itching to leave the meetings because dominant people like it brief, to the point."

"Hey, no worries. Now you know but yes, you got to get the book what they love and dislike. Their strengths and weaknesses. If they are task orientated or not.

He knew how to inspire, motivate, communicate to each one. This knowledge is valuabe for CEO's, team leaders, sales people, everyone! Especially parents.

Some parents don't know their child's personality type and can damage their relationship with their children. They will see their dominant personality as stubborness, not doing what they are told. Instead of realising there's a bigger picture that needs to be revealed and learnt.

Personalities are languages. It is an investment not just for business, not just to understand your clients but also, to help your family especially children.

You'll know why by what I am about to show you and guaranteed, you are going to go, "Damn! I got it wrong," or, "Oooh, Aaah," and "No way!" Yes way. Learn this skill because it is vital for all the spheres of your life. Your life, this planet is full of people with different personalities.

You need to know their character traits, their personality styles to communicate with them effectively.

History Of Disc Personality

DISC is the four quadrant behavioral model based on the work of William Moulton Marston Ph.D.

(1893 - 1947) he examined the behavior of individuals in their environment or within a specific situation. DISC looks at behavioral styles and behavioral preferences.

Marston completed doctoral studies at Harvard in the newly developing field of Psychology.

In the early 1920's Marston first studied the concepts of will and power and their effect on personality and human behavior. These findings contributed greatly to the field of psychology.

Marston published Emotions of Normal People in 1928.[2] In this book he first formally presented his findings, though he had written about DISC four years earlier. Marston published a second book on DISC, Integrative Psychology, in 1931. Marston really wanted to develop a unit of measurement of 'mental energy'. He did not develop the DISC test or assessment.

In fact, he never used it as an assessment at all. However, in 1930, a friend did use it as an assessment in a book on success and it was published as one of the first in the newly emerging field of Self-Help publications. 9Reference from wiki)

You may think he was the first, right? The truth is, it goes right back to the greeks.

Hippocrates
He theorized that every boy has four fluids (humors); blood, phlegm (...respiratory secretions), yellow bile and black bile. He thought that these fluids affect human body in a number of ways.

Galen (190 A.D.)
Based on what Hippocrates, Galen explored the theory even further. He was the one that identified them as sanguine, phlegm, cholera and melancholy.

What we now know as the personality types called Dominant, Influence, Supportive and Cautious. This spells out as DISC. So if you hear someone talking about the DISC PERSONALITY then that's they mean.

The Story About Different Personality Types

Dominant Personality

The parents have four daughters and each daughter has a different personality. Things weren't going so well with the daughters and many a times, the parents would do know what to do.

Dominant Personality
The eldest daughter Sharon was the on your face type and if the parents said something wrong to her, well, an argument would erupt. No matter what they asked her to do, she would storm off. She'd still do the task but it was with a fight.

You see, what her parents didn't know is her personality language. Sharon is a High Dominant and this personality needs some care. Dominant people are outgoing and they are task orientated, doers and determined kind of people. Argue with a dominant personality and you will have a fight. They won't give into an argument until they win or until you walk away.

Dominant personality wants to always be right! When you understand this then you will need to figure out the best way to approach such a personality. They can seem to be egoistic and right on your face. Don't let that scare you. It can also be a front and to protect themselves from being emotional or attached.

They are direct, demanding, decisive, determined. I will explain more into detail regarding all personalities but let's say for Sharon - her parents didn't know her personality language. They didn't know emotional language and it just wasn't going right.

So when they TOLD her to do something then they fought against the personality she has. Don't tell dominant people what to do but ask them for help. Share with them how they can solve problems and that they are the best for the job.

Watch how they nod with you and do the job just like that and without any arguments.

Inspiring Personality

Also Known As Influence or Image

Inspiring Personality
Next is Denise, and she's the bubbly type. She loves to party and exaggerates a lot. She loves telling stories and entwining them with adventures and excitement. The thing is, she doesn't get along with her eldest sister Sharon.

Denise would always stop dancing or smiling, or feeling excited when Sharon walks in the room. She could feel the heat of negativity and anger. And Sharon just doesn't like long stories and likes everything to be brief. Denise is an I-Personality. 'I' stands for Inspiring or Influence, Image. They are inspiring people. Easily influenced and easy to hype up but they're also love to interact.

They are impressive and when they walk into your life, you will see colour and drama. They are interesting people. Through them in a boring room and they will die but bring them to a party and they will lap it up and party all day. They bring excitement but dislike negativity. One negative sound or a no from someone and they'll run a mile from you.

'I' personality don't like to be ignored, ridiculed, isolated and definitely they don't like repetitive tasks. It will bore them. They love Fun, they are responsive, stimulating, positive, upbeat and very enthusiastic. If you want a people's person who loves to interact with people and make the environment talkative, upbeat then 'I' personality is the one for your team. More on the 'I' personality later on.

Supportive Personality

The Stabliser And Making People Happy

Then there is Sarah who is an 'S' Personality. Again, Sarah is also reserved but not as much as Angel. The thing with Sarah is this she is supportive, so supportive that she becomes like one of those people who have no life. She'll work hard to support someone, be there for them, help fix their life's but her life can be in a mess.

Ever met someone like that. The world sometimes sees the Supportive personality as people who are taken for a ride and sometimes seen as suckers. No, not suck blooding people but people who can be taken for advantage. Very Reluctant decision making. I have met many Supportive personality people and what I love about them is they are kind, pleasant, caring, very patiant, gentle and understanding.

They just need to work on their dominant side because this can help them to speak up, not be used, start now, be aggressive in decision making. Now, when you know this is the case then you can create an enviroment every personality to shape up, strengthen their weak traits.

Supportive Personality Styles are motivated by helping others, you don't see them rushing in their lives much. They like to finish the job and enjoy team work. Now, the other side is that they are easily manipulated, and even they are the sweetest of people - they are poor starters but hey, great finishers! Very reluctant t

Each personality has a beauty, each personality has strengths and room for development but if a parent, or a business owner, or a team leader doesn't know each personality then there's going to be trouble.

For example, if you put a Dominant Personality with a C Personality, then you will meet trouble. Why? Well as we've realized, a cautious personality will not move until he or she has figured everything out to the detail.

And a Dominant personality is decisive! They are doer's and want to get things done..NOW! Can you see the problem here?

Cautious Personality

Reserved, Calculating and Conscientious

Cautious
Angela is the reserved type. You'd always see her watching Sharon and Denis at the corner of the room. She doesn't share much of herself until she knows you inside out. You see Angel is a High 'C' which stands for Cautious.

Cautious people are as it says, cautious, calculating and conscientious. They will first study an opportunity inside out. They'll research and do more research, ask for more information and keep going this way until they are satisfied and until everything is right. They think a lot and they are very careful.

You won't see them jumping over a fence but will first find the rule book and see if it's allowed and then do it. And yet, they are very competent, knowledgeable, fact figure and technical guru's if that's what you want them to be.

I am using this book as the basis for a personality experiment for my dissertation. So far, EVERYONE who has taken the questionnaire has been amazed at how accurately the personality descriptions have fitted them. I know there must be more than 16 different types of people in the world, some may argue that it oversimplifies the issue, but I feel it has provided the people I tested with useful insights about their character, which might help them to understand their behaviour.

Supportive Personality Explained in Detail

I have been in business for sometime now to meet many supportive personalty types. What I found and has become predictable is their personality is very indecisive.

They like to be spectators, unmotivated and selfish. They do have strengths too, which I wille explain below but they need to work on their dominant, go getting, action personality.

They support people and trust worthy but they can also been seen as suckers that many take for a ride. They will love to spend time healing the world, helping to solve other people's problems but forget about their own financial challenges, their own problems which is in disarray.

So what can we learn from the supportive personality? Quiet a few things.

NOTE
Can you see how this can cause great conflictions if you have a supportive personality and a dominant personality that don't understand each other?

The dominant is dominant in approach, likes to get things done, makes decisions fast and domineering. Now, if the dominant personality pushes, not showing emotions, and the caring attitude which is in that soul of theirs but needs work - then the supportive personality thinks they don't care.

And have I seen so many relationship mess up on not taking time to understand each other and the emotional language, the personality types of one another. It is essential to get this right for fruitful relationships with spouse, children, clients, team because that's who you will be meeting...PEOPLE with different personality types!

A Great Quote

Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster. Your life will never be the same again.
Og Mandino

Cautious Personality Type

The Cautious personality are Self-Consciousness. They they a lot about risks and what would someone think of them. They are very concerned about being ridiculed, criticised and slow on the taking with visions at times.

I have sat with Cautious personality and they want facts, figures, to the details and will not make decisions sometimes until they have everything. Which is why I don't bother at times just sitting down with them explaining but give them all the information, a thesis of my company, work, everything IF they qualify.

Then I leave them to it. That's the way you have to work with Cautious personality at times. I am a dominant personality and so, I like to make decisions now, today, this moment and move on, and go for it. Without worrying what someone else thinks, or opinions if something works or doesn't. So in a sense, I don't care about people criticising me or ridicule but if they face off at me, in presense, then an arguments can happen.

To rectify this, I learn all the personality traites and work towards serving towards these personalities without wasting my time and energy.

So what is it that we can learn from Cautious personality types? Well, like all the personality types, we can learn a lot.

About The Author Of 'It's A Zoo Around Here'

The Book That Made Positive Impact

The author Nigel Risner did an amazing job because I began to laugh my head off when I read the different personalities. It helped me to understand why someone said such things, why they behave in such a way, how they tick, how to communicate with them, how to advice each different personality and how to inspire change in their thinking.

So what's all this Disc Personality About?
People have predictable patterns of behaviour and specific personality styles. When you understand this personality styles and behaviour as languages then you are about to embark in the most powerful method of communication.

That's when you stop guessing but really understand the people you work with. It is crucial for developing teams, a company, a work force, a family and a community.

There are four basic personality types and when combined they shape your personality style. Understanding them or understanding your own personality, will help you to know why you think that way, feel this way and act in a certain way. So is the case with other people.
