Keep your kids safe with these 5 easy to remember rules

The internet is a fascinating tool opening our worlds up and bringing people together. Of courss, if we aren't careful, we open our homes to undesirable people and groups. Most of the people you meet online will be friendly and helpful, but you need to protect your family against the others.

The S.M.A.R.T. rules to follow to keep yourself safe online

The S.M.A.R.T. rules are recognised by leading web safety experts around the world. Check out some of the links later in this article for games and puzzles to help your children remember the rules.
  • SAFE - Don't share personal information when you are on the internet. Nobody needs to know your phone number, address or where you go to school. If they do need that information tell them to ask your parents!
  • MEETING - Never arrange to meet with someone when you are online. Even if you think you know the person you are chatting with - they may not be who they say they are. If it is a friend, ask them to call your parents - they should know your number if they are who they say they are.
  • ACCEPTING - Accepting messages, images or files from someone you don't know or trust might damage your computer or be upsetting. If you don't know or trust the person sending something to you - let a parent or whoever is looking after you, check it out. If in doubt - delete it.
  • RELIABLE - Some people pretend to be someone else when they are online. Just because they have a picture, it isn't always them. Don't share any personal information online - a real friend would not have to ask.
  • TELL - If you are ever worried, scared or upset by something you see, hear or read online, tell someone straight away. You could tell your parents, teachers or anyone you feel you can trust.

Whilst they're learning how to be safe online - protect your children with security software installed on your computer

Running security software on your pc will allow you to say exactly what can and cannot be viewed by your children. You can set a password so that different people in your home or office, can access different types of material.
