Trotters and Pacers

Best known for harness racing, the versatile Standardbred is often retrained as a saddle horse and is able to learn several smooth gaits such as a stepping pace and a rack. Some excellent speed racking horses are full-blooded Standardbreds.

Many rescue groups exist to ensure that those horses that don't excel on the track, are not just thrown away but able to start new lives as companion animals, mounts for dressage and jumping, trail horses and other pursuits.

Standardbreds

Standardbreds are a breed of horse best known for their ability to race in harness at a trot or pace instead of under saddle at a gallop. Developed in North America, the breed is now recognized worldwide for its harness racing ability. They are solid, well-built horses with good dispositions that are also used under saddle for a variety of equestrian activities, particularly in the Midwest and eastern United States.
