Top 10 Steampunk Movies

Steampunk movies are films set in a "retro-futuristic" society where imaginative fantasy and anachronistic technology go hand in hand.

In Steampunk movies pretty much anything can happen!

Steampunk was originally described as "Victorian era science fiction", but as the genre has grown, it has expanded to include many related forms of "speculative fiction". Mad scientists and imaginative inventors meet historical figures and literary characters and embark on wonderful flights of fantasy! Such rich imagery and scope has resulted in many entertaining and visually stunning films.

Here's my personal Top 10 Steampunk movies. Each of my film choices are followed with trailers from the movies so you can have a look for yourself! You may not agree with my choices so please feel free to comment, vote for or add your own best Steampunk movies or suggest other Steampunk films!

What Is Steampunk?

Steampunk = a "retro-futuristic" genre of fiction/fantasy featuring wildly imagined inventions and anachronistic technology

Definition of Steampunk

Best Steampunk MoviesJudging by comments in the Steampunk Soapbox (further down the page), it seems that quite a few people are unfamiliar with the term "Steampunk" and have wandered into this page on a voyage of discovery! Those already aware of the rich and varied delights of Steampunk can skip this bit as I'm going to digress briefly to give an insight into what constitutes Steampunk.

Steampunk is eclectic - it means different things to different people. Broadly speaking Steampunk takes elements of the following:

Speculative fiction ("what if an historical event/literary character/book etc had played out differently?"),
Anachronistic science fiction (shuffling things around in time - like introducing technology into a time period where it didn't actually exist),
Imaginative fantasy

Steampunk mixes all those ingredients up! Think Victorian "mad science", Jules Verne and H.G Wells, Time Machines and Captain Nemo, fantastical inventions, gaslight, air ships and steam powered computers - a "retro-futuristic" society which can encompass anyone, anywhere, anytime!

Steampunk now covers a vast genre of literature, films, music, fashion and even a lifestyle subculture!

1. The Prestige

Steampunk Movies - The Prestige

Based on the novel by Christopher Priest, this film is a superbly atmospheric tale of resentment and jealousy set against the gaslit theatres of Victorian London and the Colorado laboratory of a genuine historical figure: famed physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla (played brilliantly by David Bowie no less!!). Tesla made significant contributions to the development of electricity and The Prestige sees him aid Angier's quest to out-do Borden's "teleportation illusion" act by inventing a splendidly Steampunk machine which can teleport a human for real! An absolutely brilliant film and a "must-see" for Steampunk fans!

The City Of Lost Children

Steampunk Movies - The City Of Lost Children

What makes this film "Steampunk" is Krank's "Mad Science" including a sinister cult of blind men called "Cyclops" who he uses to perform the kidnappings. In return for giving up their sight, the cult members are given a mechanical "third eye" (called an "Optacon") and a device which makes their hearing supersensitive. I haven't seen this film, but so many people rave about it as a magnificent example of steampunk, that it's definitely on my "must see" list

What about the "Underworld" series? There's lots of steam AND punk in those! I, too was dubious about "Wild WIld West", though it's actually VERY steampunk--just a mediocre film at best, wasting four excellent actors. I'm glad you included "Time after Time", as it's one of the first of this "genre", though not that punk or steam, but definitely on the edge, like most things penned by H.G. Wells

I very much welcome the input of visitors to this page as I've discovered many amazing films on a Steampunk theme, so please keep it coming - what does get my back up is people getting all huffy, castigating me for omitting things they like and disagreeing with me! Great lens! I learn something new every time I go looking at other lenses. I never heard of this type of movie being called "Steampunk." I have seen a few of them and generally enjoy them all. The main element that is crucial for me in a movie or a book is that it makes me want to willingly suspend my disbelief. There is one that I didn't quite see among your lists and that is "The Fatherland" with Rutger Hauer. That was a pretty interesting movie. It is a murder mystery that takes place in a world where Hitler was never defeated. Hauer has to investigate the murder of a high-ranking Nazi officer. The premise is intriguing. Nice lens. Well done and in-depth. I like it.

It's not a movie but an excellent TV show that unfortunately got budget problems and was cancelled. But it's amazing: mechanical moles, steam vampires, balloons and all the cool stuff.

The best part of steampunk is the imagination that goes into it. The 'what if' question is in my opinion one the most fun, and steampunk often manages to carry it off with a touch of humor. And who else carries bronze and brass as mainstays of color? Very under rated.

A really good list of old and new. The Prestige and City of Lost Children are amazing...and of course Metropolis is a classic.

Thank you for putting a name to the genre that I find myself drawn to. Their inventive movies that I love and you named some very good ones. My favorite would have to be Time After Time and then Lemony Snicket. Thank you for the great post.

Sherlock Holmes is fantastic, especially the score by Hans Zimmer. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is an underated flick in my view, I really enjoyed it. But the one I hadn't heard of was Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidocq , so thanks for this list because now I have a new film to check out that I'd never heard of.

Seen about half of these - I think I was coverted when I read Professor Branestawm as a kid - though that was well before Steampunk was invented.

oooh love this lens! A few years ago I didn't know the term "steampunk" but i DID know that I loved that sort of look and aesthetic. When I saw The Golden Compass, I kept thinking how marvellous the set and costume designs were. In fact I watched the movie a couple more times only because of that! :D

I didn't know there was a genre for movies called steampunk and that apparently, I like it. Of your list I especially liked: The Golden Compass, Van Helsing, Hellboy, and The League Of Extraodinary Gentlemen.
