What is Steampunk?...

Wikipedia defines Steampunk as "a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used-usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England-but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality.

Steampunk is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely.

Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual craftpersons into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk."

Steampunk jewelry art ...how to create your own Steampunk style

Steampunk jewelry and art is one of the latest crazes on Etsy and Ebay.

In this lens, I will show you where to get supplies and give examples as ideas for creating your own Steampunk jewelry and art. Create for yourself, friends, family or resale!

Possible Supplies Needed: (I say "possible" cause it really is up to the artist what they want to use)

watch parts/dials
vintage keys
metal filigrees
watch part images
glue
resin
jewelry parts like cuff links or adjustable rings.

Since there is no set way of creating an unique piece I will show pieces I have created and how I did them...your artistic interpretation will show in your unique creations.

To adhere metal to metal I hear E6000 glue is one of the best and to cover metal bits I use resin (glue gears into place 1st or when you apply the resin they will move around and float into a different position changing your art).

The above pair of steampunk earrings are listed on Etsy. I created them with diamond shaped metal filigrees, and watch dials which I crackled (click HERE for crackle lens)...then I finished them with earring hooks. They are similar to the crackled pair of earrings displayed above which sold on Etsy.

The above necklace and pendant was SOLD on Etsy. Again, I created them with the diamond shaped metal filigrees, placing them end to end and attaching with glue and a brad. I crackled and stained a large watch dial. For added texture and dimension I added an old clock hand.

This steampunk style pendant and necklace was created with a Victorian style frame filigree. I painted the center of it black (acrylic paint) so the various silver watch parts and gears would stand out. I arranged several different watch gears and parts within the oval center the way I liked, affixing them with glue. Once the glue was dry I sealed with resin. After 48 hrs drying time, the pendant was ready to attach to chain and embellished with a vintage style mini lock and key. This piece was later re-vamped into a pendant and SOLD on Etsy .

The Victorian style steampunk pendant and necklace shown at the very top of this lens was created with a Victorian circle metal filigree, crackled watch dial, clock hand and other gears and parts. It was sold on Etsy.

The above earrings are created with gold toned watch parts and clock hands. They are also available for sale but not yet listed anywhere.

Below are 2 different pendant/necklaces. They are a "work in progress". Look for them to be listed in my AlteredKat Etsy Shop. Both created with vintage watch casings, added gears and parts and matching chain. To finish them off I will add charms or additional watch parts below the main pendant.

I hope you have enjoyed my lens on steampunk jewelry & art. Maybe you are inspired enough to create some yourself! Happy Creating!
