For the comic book, see Steampunk (comics). A rocket lands on the moon in Le Voyage dans la Lune, the film adaptation of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon. A rocket lands on the moon in Le Voyage dans la Lune, the film adaptation of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon.

Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in (or strongly inspired by—see fantasy-world steampunk below) an era when steam power was still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. It is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase but developed as a separate movement (though with considerable influence on each other). Their main difference beyond the chronological differences in settings is that Steampunk settings tend to be less obviously dystopian.

Nice site, many thanks for the list there are some books I hadn't heard of.
I love the film list, wondering if you have seen Dark City? Not strictly Steampunk but there are interesting elements in it.
All the best, if your interested here is my own Steam Punk Jewelry blog.

Yes I got both FireFly and Serenity for Christmas, which the whole family has enjoyed watching. RedDwarf is another hot favourite of mine.

N.B. I've divided the featured lenses on Victorian Culture into groups giving fiction which includes science fiction its own section.

Nice one. I like Science Fiction ? a lot. First time I've heard of SteamPunk although it looks does look intriguing, so I followed the link to Wikipedia for more information and was not disappointed. The story line is excellent, up to the standard of FireFly. It would really be nice to see it on the big screen one day, although I guess (as with so many other good ideas) unlikely.

Keep up the good work.
