an introduction to the world of Steampunk
What is Steampunk?
The gilded tome called wikipedia describes Steampunk like this:Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used-usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England-but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality. It is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely

- SteamPunk Magazine is a publication that is dedicated to promoting steampunk as a culture, as more than a sub-category of fiction. It is a journal of fashion, music, misapplied technology and chaos. And fiction.
It just may be the most spectacular magazine to ever fight against the spectacle, and it is free. Or as cheap as we can possibly get it to you. - The Steampunk Workshop

Second Life
What, exactly, is Second Life? Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its Residents. There are many "worlds" to play around in there and over 9 million people to meet."What does that have to do with Steampunk Dr. Dayafter?"
Well, as far as I know, there are currently two place with a Steampunk nature behind them. One of them is Caledon, a gloriously Victorian world that has many shops and a lot of fun and talented people living there. Most of the pictures you see of me on this lens were taken there. There are several wonderful restaurants, a steam powered public transit system, airships, boat rides, and a whole host of other things to do.
The other is Babbage (or New Babbage), which has a much more industrial feel about the place. I cannot attest to what attractions or events they have though, as I have been there only once or twice. I can tell you that there is a very nice clothing shop there that will do you right.
