The Coolest Airplane of the Face of the Earth!!!
Aircraft Association.
Every summer, they would take my siblings and I on a drive around the EAA grounds during the annual Airventure fly-in. I was always fascinated with the tens-of-thousands of winged beauties parked on nearly every square inch of the airport.
A couple of times, I actually had the amazing opportunity to cross to the other side of the fence and walk, with my dad, onto the flightline. And every time, my eyes were drawn, over and over again, toward those beautiful biplanes. There was just something mesmerizing about them.
So one day, when I began looking into building my own airplane (that's right, building my own airplane!), I had to have a biplane.
And I found the perfect one. It's called a Steen Skybolt. This lens is dedicated to the legendary Steen Skybolt.

Build Your Own Skybolt
Believe It!
The Steen Skybolt is a two-seat aerobatic biplane. It was designed in the 1968 by Lamar Steen. As the story goes, he really loved aerobatic airplanes (like the Pitts) but had a hard time fitting into them. So he designed the Skybolt as a slightly larger option. The Skybolt is an amazing balance of raw power and incredible beauty. I love the look of just about any biplane. But there's something special about the Skybolt. What I really love about it is the huge, curved vertical and horizontal stabilizers (the tail).
Plans for the Skybolt, along with everything else you could possibly need to build one, can be found at the Steen Aero webpage (www.steenaero.com).
Building one isn't nearly as difficult as you might think. It can be built using relatively simple hand tools. To prove it to you, I'll upload photos of my own project (as soon as I figure out how to do that...advice welcomed!).
There's even an entire online community of people working on building Skybolts and other similar biplanes. Their website is www.biplaneforum.com.
If there's anything you would like to know about the Skybolt, please leave a comment and I'll try to find answers. And...of course...I would love it if you would rate this lens!
Enjoy!
