Hong Kong's King of Comedy

Some of the funniest movies I've seen have come from Hong Kong. My favorite actor from these movies is Stephen Chow. He is a prolific actor, director, writer, and producer, often working as two or more of these roles in his movies.

A happy movie discovery

I discovered Stephen Chow's movies through my love of Kung Fu films. These movies introduced me to the other genres of Hong Kong cinema. Cable TV was also a big factor. I'd spend hours watching the Mandarin movie channel (with subtitles) watching comedies, martial arts, dramas and thrillers. I loved comedy the most. There was a little slapstick, sometimes the humor was in the facial expressions, and sometimes in the spoken lines. The barrier of having to read/listen to translated jokes was no barrier at all.

When I first saw this movie it was on TV and halfway through. I watched the rest of it and couldn't stop laughing. Later I was able to watch the whole movie and again could not stop laughing. What other movie has gods, Kung Fu, Shaolin monks, and cooking battles? I especially liked the judges running commentary during the final cook-off. Very funny movie!

This movie is hilarious. I love the sense of humor! It also helps that I'm a Kung Fu movie fan. This film blends traditional and new elements in a very funny and entertaining way.

Shaolin Soccer

Shaolin Soccer

This about a group of misfit former Kung Fu masters. Normal life hasn't been very good to them, and they band together to form a soccer team, and maybe rediscover themselves.
I was a little disappointed by this one. I didn't like the dubbing very much, maybe the subtitled version is funnier. I'm staying away from dubbed versions from now on.
