Carrie
Stephen King's first published novel offers a warning to bullies in the person of Carrie White, a high school misfit who wreaks her revenge in a now-famous prom scene. While the story is no less fresh today than it was in 1974, this audio edition promises a "brand-new introduction from the author," which is not, in fact, included in the recording.
The story is narrated by Sissy Spacek, who played the title role in the movie. While Spacek perfectly understands the protagonist and amply projects both her hopes and misery, this listener found it unsettling to hear a story about Maine natives in a Maine town read in a clear Texas drawl. Spacek's consistency and acting ability somewhat make up for this incongruity, but King's "Mainiacs" still sound more performed than real. AudioFile, Portland, Maine

The Mist Movie Tie-In: In 3 D Sound
Sound so visual you're literally engulfed by its bonechilling terror! Stephen King's sinister imagination and the miracle of 3-D sound transport you to a sleepy all-American town. It's a hot, lazy day, perfect for a cookout, until you see those strange dark clouds. Suddenly a violent storm sweeps across the lake and ends as abruptly and unexpectedly as it had begun.
Then comes the mist...creeping slowly, inexorably into town, where it settles and waits, trapping you in the supermarket with dozens of others, cut off from your families and the world. The mist is alive, seething with unearthly sounds and movements. What unleashed this terror? Was it the Arrowhead Project---the top secret government operation that everyone has noticed but no one quite understands? And what happens when the provisions have run out and you're forced to make your escape, edging blindly through the dim light? The Mist has you in it grip, and this masterpiece of 3-D sound engineering surrounds you with horror so real that you'll be grabbing your own arm for reassurance. To one side---and whipping around your chair, a slither of tentacles. Swooping down upon you, a rush grotesque, prehistoric wings. In the impenetrable mist, hearing is seeing---and believing. And what you're about to hear, you'll never forget.

Wizard and Glass (The Dark Tower, Book 4)
Running time: 27 hours - 18 cassettes
Frank Muller, the recognized virtuoso of audiobook narration (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption), takes on Stephen King's Goliath tale of sorcerers, time travelers, and sci-fi love. Totaling more than 27 hours and spanning 18 cassettes, Wizard and Glass requires the listener to love Muller's Hannibal Lecter-like voice--either that or suffer in audio hell for the equivalent of three full working days.
While some might find his breathy staccatos irritating at best, others will find his voice the perfect accompaniment to King's creepy characters and nightmarish plots.
The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, Book 3)
The third installment in the offbeat fantasy saga involving the enigmatic Roland (the last gunfighter) and his quest for the Dark Tower. While the story (inspired by Robert Browning's narrative poem ``Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came'') is entertaining, what really makes it outstanding are King's unique, multifaceted characters. This is Stephen King at his best. School Library Journal

- I just love most of the stories and novels I have read as King or Bachman. The only one thing I dislike is his use of so much profanity. Not that I am prude but I think his use of language is superb and so much profanity just takes up space for some of his best work. I mean, even a kid can write one or all of the 7 words you can´t say on TV.

Stephen King Reading List - See below for direct Links to these books
Entertainment Weekly asked Stephen King what his favorite 2008 books are. This is quite interesting, it most likely will surprise you, we seem to have a somewhat squewed image of Stephan King:
1. The novels of Robert Goddard
Of this British mystery/suspense novelist he discovered throuhg 'Pale Battalions'. What attract his is the mix of are missing heirs, stolen fortunes, mistaken identities, raffish con men, hot sex, and cold-blooded murder that these books are about.
2. The Garden of Last Days by Andre Dubus III
He thinks that this book is both terrifying, unputdownable, and the best novel so far about 9/11.
3. When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson
This novel featurs private eye Jackson Brodie. Stephen Kins is staggered by Atkinson's narrative wizardry of writing a twisted plot that finally untagles well.
4. The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney
A search for a boy missing in the chilly Canadian wilderness of 150 years ago.
5. Nixonland by Rick Perlstein
Nonfiction. He says that it's the best history of the turbulent '60s he's ever read.
6. Heartsick/Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain
7. Hollywood Crows by Joseph Wambaugh
8. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
9. Old Flames by Jack Ketchum
10. The Good Guy by Dean Koontz

In the best tradition of British storytelling, here murder, deceit, family honor, and intrigue are intricately woven into a compelling drama of decadent British aristocracy set during World War I. Leonora Galloway, who has for 50 years meticulously shunned discussion of her unpleasant childhood at the family ancestral home near Portsmouth, reveals her past to her daughter. In a controlled and measured way, Leonora recounts her tale, which includes discussion of Leonora's own questionable parentage, the details of an unsolved murder that occurred before she was born, her father's desertion from the army, and the ignominious end of a revered family name and a noble house. Enthralling to the final page.

Dubus's follow-up to "House of Sand and Fog" is inspired by the rumored visit of 9/11 hijackers to a strip club shortly before their attacks. In the fictional Puma Club, in Sarasota, Florida, a twenty-six-year-old named Bassam al-Jizani watches Spring, a stripper, undress, and finds his "hatred for these kufar rising with the knowledge of his own weakness." We know he is entranced, because he does not imagine slitting her throat, as he does with most people he encounters. Bassam recoils from the hedonistic pursuits of the West, yet finds himself drawn to them; losing his virginity to a prostitute, he wonders, "How many years will she be given by the Creator before she will burn?" Imagining the mind of a terrorist, Dubus runs into a familiar problem: Bassam's thoughts are a case study in the banality of evil. "Hatred gives him strength," he writes. But it doesn't make him interesting.

When Will There Be Good News? - Kate Atkinson
When Will There Be Good News?: A Novel
Amazon Price: $15.74 (as of 11/26/2009)![]()
List Price: $24.99
Critics greeted the return of Jackson Brodie enthusiastically, and many stated that When Will There Be Good News? is the best installment of the three-book series. Atkinson's mysteries develop naturally from her charmingly flawed characters and display her keen insight into human nature. Her control of the plot is absolute: it ratchets up the tension while the narrative accelerates to breakneck speeds. Atkinson's razor-sharp humor and literary games add to the fun without distracting from the story. A few critics lamented the heavy use of coincidences and mistaken identities, but the Guardian perceived an added layer of meaning to such plot contrivances. Readers are forewarned: they may not be able to put down this riveting, entertaining, and clever novel until they've turned the final page.

Good read that is not easily inserted into any genre. This book was not getting any play in the States and this is one reason I am always on the look out for best selling UK books. The Central theme of the book is a murder mystery, but it is much more. The setting is Canada's far north in the second half of the 19th century. The author does a wonderful job of describing the people, The Scottish immigrants and the native people. She is also is in command of the country, the frozen north, which is especially amazing as she has never been there! As another reviewer commented, the book is a bit hard to get into with it myriad or characters, and it does drag in a few places, but offer all this is a worthy four star read. Molly Peters

Nixonland by Rick Perlstein
Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America

List Price: $37.50
Perlstein, winner of a Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus, provides a compelling account of Richard Nixon as a masterful harvester of negative energy, turning the turmoil of the 1960s into a ladder to political notoriety. Perlstein's key narrative begins at about the time of the Watts riots, in the shadow of Lyndon Johnson's overwhelming 1964 victory at the polls against Goldwater, which left America's conservative movement broken. Through shrewdly selected anecdotes, Perlstein demonstrates the many ways Nixon used riots, anti-Vietnam War protests, the drug culture and other displays of unrest as an easy relief against which to frame his pitch for his narrow win of 1968 and landslide victory of 1972. Nixon spoke of solid, old-fashioned American values, law and order and respect for the traditional hierarchy. In this way, says Perlstein, Nixon created a new dividing line in the rhetoric of American political life that remains with us today. At the same time, Perlstein illuminates the many demons that haunted Nixon, especially how he came to view his political adversaries as enemies of both himself and the nation and brought about his own downfall.

In Ketchum's by-the-numbers suspense thriller, divorcée Dora Welles, a New York City antiques dealer who's unlucky in love, decides to track down her old high school squeeze, Jim Weybourne, through a detective agency that specializes in locating lost lovers. When Jim turns out to be happily married with two children in California, the resourceful Dora finds a way to insinuate herself casually into their lives. Dora soon begins scheming how to supplant Jim's wife and reclaim him for her own. Though Dora makes an interesting study as a woman whose driven personality needs the least nudge to pitch over into violent psychopathology, this slim story offers no twists or surprises, especially for readers who have seen the theme treated countless times before in fiction and film. Ketchum (Joyride) reveals in an afterword that he originally wrote the novel as a screenplay; indeed, this might have worked better as a B-movie.

Big Tim Carrier maintains the lowest possible profile, but that tactic crumbles after he is mistaken for a hit man, and when the hit man arrives, poses as the client and tries to cancel. But no one aborts this guy's missions. Tim rushes to shield the prospective victim, writer Linda Paquette, and it soon becomes obvious that the killer has access to every auto-, phone-, and credit-tracing device known to law enforcement (is he a cop?). Moreover, he somehow can pressure law enforcement to be unhelpful, as Tim and Linda discover when Tim's police friend Pete Santo is warned off so firmly that he joins Tim and Linda on the run. For most of its length, this is white-knuckle suspense as gripping as any Koontz has ever written, and the principals all have intriguing backstories that are eventually, with the frustrating exception of the killer's, fully disclosed. Yet the climax and the denouement seem half-baked and perfunctory. This is, however, as politically passionate and common-guy witty as his other, better recent books. Ray Olson
