The Master of Horror

Stephen King has been named by many as the Master of Horror. His dark mind has created many a world that has brought our darkest fears into reality, so to speak. I dare to say that his books have probably contributed to many, many nightmares as well.

A Stephen King novel grabs you and doesn't let go until the terrifying finish. His books will take you to places that you have only dreamed about in your worst nightmares. If you have not yet experienced the grip of a Stephen King novel, you don't know what you're missing.

Stephen King's Latest Novel

Duma Key

It would be impossible to convey the wonder and the horror of Stephen King's latest novel in just a few words. Suffice it to say that Duma Key, the story of Edgar Freemantle and his recovery from the terrible nightmare-inducing accident that stole his arm and ended his marriage, is Stephen King's most brilliant novel to date (outside of the Dark Tower novels, in which case each is arguably his best work). Duma Key is as rich and rewarding as Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption (yes, that Shawshank Redemption), and as truly scary as anything King has written (and that's saying a lot). Readers who have "always wanted to try Stephen King" but never known where to start should try a few pages of Duma Key--the frankness with which Edgar reveals his desperate, sputtering rages and thoughts of suicide is King at the top of his game. And that's just the first thirty pages... --Daphne DurhamSource

Why I Love Stephen King

As a young reader, I enjoyed writers such as RL Stein, Lois Duncan, and other authors of books designed for young adult readers. Eventually, wanting to expand my horizons, I turned to adult novels. Stephen King was my first foray into the land of horror fiction.

My first Stephen King novel was It. I fell in love with the characters and the storyline itself. The friendship and bond that Bill, Richie, Ben, Bev, Eddie, Stan, and Mike developed was heart-wrenching. And watching them battle Pennywise The Clown was excruciating.

My favorite Stephen King novel is The Stand. This one is very disturbing, but it is a wonderful read. In this book, the survivors of a worldwide plague take sides between good and evil. Stephen King makes it easy to connect to these characters and you really feel for them.

Stephen King is an awesome writer and has become a permanent part of my personal library. I own so many of his novels, and they are like treasures to me. Suffice it to say, Stephen King has a life long fan.

3. He is the Master of Horror!

Stephen King - At A Glance

Stephen Edwin King (born September 21, 1947) is an American writer of contemporary horror fiction, science fiction, fantasy literature, and screenplays. An estimated 300-350 million copies of King's novels and short story anthologies have been sold, and many of his stories have been adapted for film, television, and other media. King has written a number of books using the pen name Richard Bachman, and one short story, "The Fifth Quarter", as John Swithen.

In 2003 the National Book Foundation awarded King the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

The Dark Tower Series

The Dark Tower is a series of seven books written by American author Stephen King between 1982 and 2004. The series incorporates themes from multiple genres, including fantasy fiction, science fantasy, horror and western elements. They describe a gunslinger's quest toward a tower whose nature the books call both physical and metaphorical. King has described the series as his magnum opus. Besides the seven novels that compose the series proper, many of his other books relate to the story, introducing concepts and characters that come into play as the series progresses.

The series was chiefly inspired by the poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" by Robert Browning, whose full text was included in the final volume's appendix. In the preface to the revised 2003 edition of The Gunslinger, King also identifies The Lord of the Rings, the Arthurian Legend, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as inspirations. He identifies Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name" character as one of the major inspirations for the protagonist, Roland Deschain. King's style of location names in the series, such as Mid-World, and his development of a unique language abstract to our own, are also influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien's work.

Stephen King - A Brief Bio

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. He made his first professional short story sale in 1967 to Startling Mystery Stories. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels. In the spring of 1973, Doubleday & Co., accepted the novel Carrie for publication, providing him the means to leave teaching and write full-time. He has since published over 40 books and has become one of the world's most successful writers.

Stephen lives in Maine and Florida with his wife, novelist Tabitha King. They are regular contributors to a number of charities including many libraries and have been honored locally for their philanthropic activities. Source
