Stephen Briggs - Terry Pratchett's Right Hand Man!

Discworld fans should be aware of the name of Stephen Briggs, but may know little or nothing about him! Here we look at redressing the situation and exploring his contributions and work.

Stephen is the narrator of choice for Terry Pratchett on theunabridged  Audiobooks of the Discworld (Tony Robinson brings to life the characters in the abridged versions). He also is the perosn mainly responsible for creating the discworld companions, adapting the discworld works for performance, the licensing of the amatuer and professional performances and also responsible for producing much of the official discworld merchandise.

Stephen Briggs at a Glance

Stephen Briggs (1951-) is, in his own words, "a civil servant who dabbles in amateur dramatics". However, through his drama work, he has become heavily involved with the subsidiary works and merchandise surrounding Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

In 1991, Briggs adapted Wyrd Sisters for the Studio Theatre Club of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. with permission from Pratchett. He played the part of Duke Felmet in the production. This was his introduction to the Discworld. He greatly enjoyed the book, and the challenge of staging it, and went on to adapt Mort the following year, in which he played Death.

The Discworld Mapp

The Discworld Mapp

They said it couldn't be done. Well, it has been done, proving them wrong once again. After years of research, cunningly contrived in as many minutes, the Discworld has its map. It takes full account of the historic and much-documented expeditions of the Discworld's feted (or at leats fated) explorers: General Sir Roderick Purdeigh, Lars Larsnephew, Llamedos Jones, Lady Alice Venturi, Ponce da Quirm and, of course, Venter Borass.

Now travellers on this circular world can see it all: from Klatch to the Ramtops, from Cori Celesti to the Circle Sea, from Genua to Bhangbhangduc. The great cities of Hunghung, Pseudopolis, Al Khali and, of course, Ankh-Morpork are placed with loving care upon this world which is carried through space by Great A'Tuin.

A Tourist Guide to Lancre

Terry Pratchett & Stephen Briggs

A Tourist Guide to Lancre: A Discworld Map

Not only an artistic and breathtaking view of Lancre but also an interesting and informative guide to one of the Discworld's more, er, picturesque kingdoms.

Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick live there. Lancre could hardly be somewhere ordinary, could it?

Magic glues the Discworld together and a lot of it ends up in Lancre, principal Kingdom of the Ramtop Mountains. Between Uberwald and Whale Bay, the Octarine Grass Country and the Widdershins Ocean lies the most exciting and dangerous terrain in all Discworld. The Ramtops supply Discworld with most of its witches and wizards. The leaves on the trees in the Ramtops move even when there is no breeze. Rocks go for a stroll in the evening. Even the land, at times, seems alive.

The mapp may only be two-dimensional, but watch it very carefully and you might see it jostle about a bit.

The Complete & Unabridged Audiobooks

As read by Stephen Briggs

These are quite different to the abridged versions as read by Tony Robinson. The unabridged versions follow the book almost word for word and are several hours in length.
The abridged versions by Tony Robinson are much shorter and more like listening to actors playing the various parts due to the skill of Tony's acting in portraying the various characters. Also the abridged version will often have sound effects and dramatic music. For more details of the abridged versions click here (link to be added)
