Stephenie Meyer's Vampires Better Than Anne Rice's?

I've been reading vampire books for many years now and Anne Rice is definitely my favorite one. Although I did enjoyed reading the Twilight Saga Books, I find the Anne Rice Vampires more erotic, scarier than the Stephenie Meyer vampires.

Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, are the best vampire books I'd have ever read, and I have read many. I mean there is no way you can compare Lestat, Armand and Marius with any of the Cullens. I'm sorry twilight fans, but that's the truth! I also like Twilight but the fact is that Anne Rice knows how to write about vampires better than Stephenie Meyer.

That's my opinion, now, let me know what you think. Do you prefer Stephenie Meyer's vampires or Anne Rice's?

Do You Like Stephenie Meyer's Vampires Better Than Anne Rice's?

I Think Anne Rice's Vampires are much better... What Do You Think?

Yes, you're right!

MillBucks says:

Anne Rice's all the way!

RJ says:

Ann Rice OWNS Stephanie Meyers, theres absoulty no comparison. Vampires dont sparkle in the sun, they're blood thirsty bastards that dont give a 2 cents about human life. Plus the thing that I really hate about the twilight series is that the whole story line is stupid. Its not only sexist against women but it tells young girls out there that its ok to have a stalker boyfriend that watches you sleep. CREEPY MUCH? AND, that young women always have to rely on men to take care of them. When we all know women can be independant. Anne Rices vampires are frekin seductive, they have an evil ora to them that attracks mortal humans til they kill you. Plus the way she describes them is just EPIC. Queen of the Damned OWNS twilight by a long shot!

dciacc says:

It is like comparing Shakespeare to South Park

Hellraiser says:

Why is this even a question?

Damien Gray says:

4 words :VAMPIRES DON'T FUCKING SPARKLE

IrmaCMD says:

Stephanie Meyer STOLE the ideas from Anne Rice and then made them WORSE by poor writing. Her writing style is so basic that were it not for the content it would be perfect for someone with a 5th grade level of reading. These are easily readable and digestible and forgettable - much like a McDonald's meal - and while Anne Rice is no 5 star meal, they have at least more nutrients, if you will, in them. They are more complex and satisfying and last longer.

asdasd says:

god, i hate people who comment "why compare?" you know why?? BECAUSE VAMPIRE DOESN'T SPARKLE WHEN THEY BATH IN THE LIGHT OF THE FREAKING SUN!!! i don't mind the romance, but seriously? sparkle?? vampire die when they they bath in sun's light. and the werewolf... oh god, it looked like an oversized gay narcist wolf

Heidi says:

Anne Rice. Meyer's books are written by an amateur who did absolutely no research whatsoever, and whose charachters show no real personality at all. They're simply awful. Anne's vampires are literature, which is probably why the Meyer fans don't like them- you have to have an education to appreciate Anne's books.

Pandora says:

In all honesty, I think that Anne's vampires are better; and she's a better author in general. She comes up with good plots and deep, 3-dimensional characters. Edward is angsty through out the entire Twilight saga, whereas Lestat, Marius, Armand, and the other characters, all go through a transformation. They have ups and downs, they differentiate throughout. The Vampire Chronicles aren't books just about romance and love, they're about what really goes on. They're about the human psyche, the heart and soul and the question of what really exists in terms of after death. Anne explores the very depths of the human intelligences and she brings to life a beautiful tale. I've been reading Anne's books since I was twelve years old, and though it's only been four years since then, I've come to see that I can't seem to find another author that can weave a portrait like Anne. I'll forever be a fan.

Vampfan says:

Meyers creatures are vampires in name only. I mean points to her for tapping the vamp craze to base a teeny bopper romance. But, Rice's series are simply better.

Whacked-Out-Inc says:

If you were to meet a random fan of Rice's work, you'd most likely end up with an individual who enjoys the books, but doesn't shove it into other people's faces.
If you were to meet a random fan of meyer's, you would either meet an annoying child who likes to type TEAM EDWARD at the end of all her messages and has little to no sense of reality or an adult who is trying to put synthetic meaning into her life because she never had any real meaning in the first place.
As for that failure of a spinoff, retelling the story in Derpward's point of view is just as pointless as having the story retold in a wet sponge's point of view.
Rice at least has the decency to not call her work a "saga". You can't call meyer's crap a saga because NOTHING INTERESTING HAPPENS. For something interesting to happen, you have to have interesting villians. Rice came up with a vampire clan posing as actors who feed (on HUMANS, by the way) in PUBLIC. Meyer's best attempt was a blonde dumbass who gets himself killed by the prissy, non-violent characters, black guy #2 of 2 (the first she depicts as being a moron who can't drive), an annoying redhead who only kills two people at most, and a vatican ripoff group who are easily talked out of anything.
So our vote goes to the REAL writer here: Anne Rice.
Meyer can use her books for tissues if she needs to.

Ming says:

Yes, Anne Rice is indeed better than Stephenie Meyer. She's more original than Stephenie and writes a great deal better. No flowery words or adjectives that make you sound smart or something. I cannot help but notice that the Twilight Saga's fans are teenage girls who rave all about how good-looking the characters are - please - read real literature. The Twilight Saga's characters are horribly flat, they lack development. Tsk.

rwoman says:

Stephanie Meyers vampires follow in a long tradition of vampire romance genres but Anne Rice offers a more original take

piscesryche says:

By far better than any other I've ever read

Myriam says:

Twilight is definetely a book written for teenagers. Neither Edward nor Carlisle have as much deepness as Lestat, Louis or Marius. Rice writes EVERYTHING that can said or felt by them. We can understand them and feel them. They are gods and they are not. The fact they're not perfect makes them more mysterious and interesting. And though I like Twilight, I don't feel the same towards Edward. He is above everything and lack the deepness Rice gives to her vampires. And how come this curse upon them lets them drink animal blood? What a lowsy curse. It's too easy, in my opinion! But then again, Meyer never gave importance to those fact. The real challenge in the book is how this impossible love between a human and a vampire can end well.
And why would a vampire fall in love with a human if not for her/his innocence or mortality? But that's not the case in Twilight. They're just attracted to each other. No real explanation except for the "Tua cantante" thing.

Derrick says:

Your absolutely right. I've read every book written by both authors. Rice is the better writer but Meyer isn't without her charms. Also I noticed that some of the vampires in the twilight series come from Anne Rice. Even their physical features

omnomnomagon says:

Vampires do NOT by any means SPARKLE

amerenth says:

Anne Rice's books are much more detailed and more into the pychology of the character. And they aren't fairies.

KatBar says:

Anne Rice definately - much scarier.

Nox says:

Twilight is defiantly a child's novel. It's a love story which is relatable to all the little girls reading it because Bella's a hopeless romantic and that pretty much summons up what girls are. Kudos to Meyer for trying something different with Vampires...but sparkling...no. (Sarcasm alert: Because every girl wants to date a guy that is wearing her body glitter)

Anne Rice is my favorite, but really Meyer and Rice shouldn't be compared. Twilight is for kids, Rice's Vampire Chronicles are not. Rice's vampires are men. No sparkles or weird aristocrats that use a small sadistic child to maim others. No. Rice's vampires do their own dirty work. :)

No way, Monkeybrain!

IrritatedEnglishTeacher says:

Quite honestly I think people are missing a crucial key here. Anne Rice, love her or hate her, writes on a level that is beyond anything Stephanie Meyer writes. I don't mean the woman is stupid, I mean that Stephanie Meyer would be better suited for writing Screenplays. She tells but she doesn't show, first off. Anne makes a point of giving a fully immersive experience; while Stephanie tends to be extremely repetitive in her wording and she isn't showing us- she's telling. An excellent example is, How do we know that Forks is dreary and desolate, weather wise? Well, naturally because Meyer tells us. In fact, I'm pretty sure those two words may be the words she used. How do you know that New Orleans, or Paris or Rome is in whatever climate? Anne tells us through clues- the warm fragrant sea air or the deep slush in the Paris streets. She shows.
Another thing is the fact that though Anne does spend quite a bit of time telling us what Lestat, Armand or Louis look like, she also does not spend chapters upon chapters describing them. Stephanie spends the majority of her time fawning over her characters and their appearances, leaving little time for their personality, dialogue, or plot.
My last problem with the comparison is that Twilight is obscenely easy to read. The first person format makes it easy to insert yourself and ignore the ridiculous purple prose and frankly lacking plot. Teenagers and aspiring writers think that this is the level they should be reading and writing at and it is sad indeed. I'm an English teacher and I simply will NOT allow my students to select Twilight as an option for reports or projects. It's not a fact of I personally despise the books, but it's a matter of it is simply far below their level. Naturally the content is mature, but it reads like a Junie B. Jones chapter book.
I've gotten a lot of angry phone calls from parents who want to know why exactly I have this "stupid" policy- many of them fans themselves. After carefully explaining, many of them call the principal and demand their child be removed from my class because I am "stifling" them; apparently I simply do not understand the pure poetry and literary genius that is Twilight. They are correct. From a teaching perspective, if my student handed this in to me as a graduation project, and I've had many students write books as their graduation projects, I would fail them. Poor punctuation and grammar, word repetition and the plot itself does not come into play until 3/4 of the way through the book.

Memnoc says:

If you are over 16 and read the Twilight series, I would think that says something about your intelligence in general.

Metronomic says:

There isnt even any comparison. None. Anne Rice created the modern vampire mythos. The Twilight books are written for teenagers and that is all well and good but what bothers me is that there are middle aged housewives that read them.

oooooo says:

meyer's vampires are like honey on my eyes.. sweet but fucking sticky....
Rice rules

Lestat Lover says:

Anne is clearly better. There is more description, and the guys are waaaay hotter. The plots are intersting and are unpredictable. Anne's charecters have CHARECTER!!

Damien Gray says:

4 words : VAMPIRES DON'T FUCKING SPARKLE

neutral vote says:

Myriam, have you read the unfinished draft "Midnight Eclipse" from 2008? It is from Edward's point of view, and explains why he falls in love with Bella.

Dianne says:

Meyer's vampire series are better. that's my opinion. but do you think vampires are real?

Jonesy says:

I am so sick of reading, and hearing about this. First it was Stephen King, and now it is Anne Rice. Saying that these two writers are the same is like saying that Coke and Pepsi are the same. They both have there place. The real problem is that once something become too popular, there is a group of people that have to hate it. Boy bands, Britney Spears, exe.

I personally believe that in the last ten years Rice and King have been putting out the same book with different names. Maybe the competition will inspire them to stop phoning in there work. Or maybe they are both just washed up, and wonder why Meyers and Rowling are outselling them.

As for Stephenie Meyers. I enjoy the work. She hasn't out wrote "The Stand", or the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Gunslingers by no means, but for the first time in a long time I am excited for a new book to come out. And I thank her for that. Let her have this. She deserves it.

ufuk says:

I like theme both :)

tdpierceall2002 says:

While I respect Anne Rice's talent (she definitely knows how to tell a story!), I find myself able to put down her books easily and not picking them back up. However, I read all of Stephanie Meyers' books in less than a week. They were engaging and gripping, and I was so very sorry to see them end. To me, Stephanie Meyers just does better character and plot development.

KARIVETHE says:

OF COURSE NOT!!!!!!!!! ANN RICE IS THE BEST NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!! AND YES I READ THE TWILIGHT SAGA BUT I HAVE READ 18 BOOKS OF MRS RICE AND I AM COMPLEATLY SURE SHE IS MUCH BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE

sockspoon says:

How can you compare Anne Rice's vampires homeophopic vampires of a latent society to the ongoing vampires of the Cullen"s?

lieselotte says:

I don't like stories of vampires that hurt humans. I am a big twilight fan, but I love vampires. No matter if they sparkle. That goes for werewolves too.

Twi-hard says:

stephienie myer!!
TEAM EDWARD!!!

Kelly says:

Seeing that neither vampires or werewolves exist, there are no actual definitions of what a vampire or werewolf should be.I, honestly, like Stephenie's a whole lot better. They're not traditional vampires, and I find that very refreshing. Not to see fanged, nightstalkers, who feed on innocent humans. Also to read a series that is decent. Not having it too sexual or bloody.

?why be affected says:

meyer breaks the usual perception to vampire. why should we compare the works of rice and meyer--rice is for the olds and meyer is for the teens. :) I dont think meyer wrote twilight saga to compete with rice. Duh. So to those who are rice and lestat fans, why you are so affected comparing twilight and rice's stories. Threatened. Oh yeah.

If you are not threatened, the shut up. :) just enjoy watching!

twilight and lestat lover says:

The rice's and meyer's sagas are two different stories...so why compare? These two sagas have different market or target audience. I love them both, but the Meyer's saga reminds me of childhood love. It is not action pack--it is just a love story.
comparing is mute and academic.

The Vampire LESTAT Book - The Vampire Chronicles Book #2

The Vampire Lestat (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (The Vampire Chronicles, Book 2)

Amazon Price: $12.37 (as of 02/16/2012)Buy Now

From Library Journal
Rice continues what promises to be a series with this fascinating sequel to her Interview with the Vampire. One of its characters, Lestat, encouraged by the telling of that story, narrates his own history, focusing on his boyhood transformation, subsequent wanderings, and constant attempts to rationalize his newly acquired immortality. Don't expect the usual stake-in-the-heart story; Rice is creating a new vampire mythos, mixing ancient Egyptian legends into her narrative, and weaving a rich and unforgettable tale of dazzling scenes and vivid personalities. This extraordinary book outclasses most contemporary horror fiction and is a novel to be savored. Highly recommended.

The Old School Vampires

Anne Rice's vampires have a very classic and elegant look, very old school. Anne Rice write about scary, horrifying but yet erotic and sensual vampires. She follows the same rules as many other have about vampires. These vamps are not someone to make friends with, these are not the Cullens. they would ripe you in pieces even before you could react.

The way Anne Rice describe her vampires is in a very dark and classy way. These vampires are very old, some are even more than 3,000 years old.

OLD SCHOOL VAMPS!

Modern and Chic Vampires

The vampires in Stephenie Meyer's world are very different from the regular, old school vamps we were used to read about. For me, vampires wore dark, classic clothes, but when I read Twilight I found that not only vampires were cool, but they dressed very modern and chic.

Stephenie Meyer portraits her vampires as very fashionable and very in style! They all looked like models wearing designers clothing!

Anne Rice's Vampires Are More Erotic and Sensual

Not only Anne Rice's Vampires are scarier and more dangerous, they are definitely more sensual and erotic than Stephenie Meyer's vampires. The sexual tension between the vampires in Anne Rice's books are incredible, suitable for real hardcore vampire fans!

The sexual tension between Lestat and Akasha was very strong, powerful and of course terrifying! i think their chemistry was better than Edward and Bella.

It's her time. Her place. The wickedly regal Mother of All Vampires is ready again to rule! Aaliyah plays the title role in this stylish shocker based on Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. Stuart Townsend portrays Lestat, the undead antihero previously seen in the movie version of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. This time, Lestat finds acceptance in a tattooed and pierced world. He's a rock star. And his intoxicating Goth-riffed sound rekindles the desires of all-powerful Akasha.

Twilight's Vampire Love is More Juvenile

I know Twilight was written for young teen girls, and that's why the romance is so juvenile. But still, young people don't act like that when they are in love. They are very immature and selfish at times. Twilight's romance was very unreal and that gives false hopes for young girls who are reading the books. They think all guys are like Edward and that's not true.

The fact that a vampire is so lovely dovely with his girlfriend is very funny to me. He is supposed to be a vampire, a scary creature, who only lurks his prey for one reason and one reason only... to KILL THEM!

I did enjoy reading twilight, but I think Anne Rice's vampires are far more erotic and sexual. Like vampires should be.

PoisonedHeart says:

Lestat's was way better. Edward's was just supid.

darkitten says:

Lestat and Akasha never had a "romance"... rather pure lust fed by wll for power :D Which is way better than all the wasted kiss moments i saw with Bella & Edward :P

AnnaleeBlysse says:

If I were 20 years younger, my answer might be different. ;)

Cutie-Patricia says:

wow i think Akasha and Lestat have a passionate moment on Queen of The Damned

I think Edward and Bella had the best romance - Stephenie Meyer

kadabug87 says:

lestat and akasha's relationship was way hotter but edward and bella's was more modern and the way a relationship should be nowadays

Stephenie Meyer's Vampires Sparkle In The Sun

Yes, they don't burn like we used to think, no, Stephenie Meyer's vampires sparkle in the sunlight. It's very different from what we were told to believe within the vampire mythology. Not only they sparkle, but they don't drink human blood, they called themselves vegetarians because they only drink animal blood. Which doesn't make sense to me. The whole reason they are vampires is to kill and drink human blood.

But of course, this is Stephenie Meyer's world, and she can make her vampires be they way she want them to be... I think!@

Vampires Are Supposed To Burn In The Sunlight

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure vampires could not be in the sunlight because they get burn. For many years, vampire folklore has been telling us this but, all of the sudden Mrs. Meyer decided that her vampires would just sparkle in the sunlight. Well I don't know about you, but this does not sound scary and terrifying like vampires should sound like.

I don't know, what do you think?

Product Description
TRUE BLOOD chronicles the backwoods Louisiana town of Bon Temps... where vampires have emerged from the coffin, and no longer need humans for their fix. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, Golden Globe(R)-winner for "True Blood", Academy Award®-winner for "The Piano") works as a waitress at the rural bar Merlotte's. Though outwardly a typical young woman, she keeps a dangerous secret: she has the ability to hear the thoughts of others. Her situation is further complicated when the bar gets its first vampire patron - 173-year old Bill Compton (Steven Moyer, "Quills") - and the two outsiders are immediately drawn to each other. Delivering the best of what audiences have come to expect from Creator and Executive Producer Alan Ball (writer of Oscar®-winning Best Picture "American Beauty", creator of the Emmy® Award-winning HBO® series "Six Feet Under"), TRUE BLOOD is a dark and sexy tale that boldly delves into the heart - and the neck - of the Deep South.

I like the idea of the vampire to BURN in the sunlight

MillBucks says:

They are condemned to burn by the light of day for sure!

Amadeo says:

BURN!!!
last word on the subject: vampires do not wear body glitter. End of discussion.

Ladyyuuki says:

Ok first of all. What kind of person wants to have a sparkly boyfriend or just a friend in general. >:U

And they don't have to technically ignite either. But they could be super sensitive to the light and sun burn easily.

Kl says:

not at all - just to hate day. to live in darkness. also? to have bad reaktion - but not burn at all! ok, well, everything depends on moral and physical strength)))))))

PoisonedHeart says:

Burn baby Burn. If you sparkle then you are a pussy.

boshemia says:

Is this a serious question???

Lestat says:

twilight vampires are not real vampires in every sense of the word. the novel/stories are for 12-year olds and who fantasizes loving old men. they have no class, no depths, no style, and most importantly no story to tell!

darkitten says:

if a wampire should be able to walk in the sunt, i should come from his sternght, age, power, as smth special about that vampire... (as Akasha was...) Not as a "curse" as the ppl can`t see them in the sun because their "glittery". Bleah... no sparkles, please!!

stacey says:

sunlight should burn them or at least they should have a strong dislike for it and avoid it at all costs, if not for simple hate of the warmth/light and remain skulking in darkness. they should become weaker or blinded, or anything. not friggen sparkle

lennon says:

lmao i agree with brian

I like the idea of a vampire to sparkle

Kelly says:

Vampires and werewolves do not exist. But I believe it is good to have a sense of imagination when writing.Stephenie Meyer brought in a different view of vampires, and made them interesting. They're not traditional, that's what makes them interesting.Twilight's vampires' teeth are supposed to be as hard as steel...so they would have no need for fangs. What's wrong with having them walk about in the daylight?

AnnaleeBlysse says:

My vampire story has both day walkers and night walkers. A vampire that can wander around in the daytime too is ultra scary.

sara says:

no

Anne Rice's Female Vampires Are Stronger Characters

I have to admit that Anne Rice's female vampire characters are much stronger than Stephenie Meyer's. For example: Stephenie Meyer's female vampires, Rosalie and Alice are very simple and almost fun characters. They don't drink human blood, they don't kill humans, at all! and they even make friends with the humans.

On the other hand, Anne Rice's female vamps, like my favorite one of all, Akasha, could vanish Stephenie Meyer's girls in one breath. This character is so strong, so powerful and so evil, it makes her the most terrifying vampire alive! She is to be the oldest of the vampires and the first one to be ever created. Akasha is very powerful and lethal! She is THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED.

You think you can change my will? I've had enough of this discussion. Join me or die! ... Akasha, Queen of the Damned

I think Akasha is a stronger female character

Kl says:

now I shall ask: "Is it a serious question?"))) sertainly, the Queen.............
but what`s about Pandora? I prefere her))))

Robinharmony says:

Akasha is the ultimate form of power, there is no comparison

PoisonedHeart says:

Don't mess with Akasha. She will burn you to nothingness.

boshemia says:

The vampire history being traced back to Akasha was an interesting addition to the mythology. Akasha is a strong female character for sure... a little too strong.

annabelle says:

stacey!
you make me laugh the living daylights out of me!!!!!!
akasha can burn them in less than a jip!
oh please!

Brian "Darkone" A. says:

Akasha need I say more! True Vampires have FANGS!! and don't run from freakin' Werewolves.

I like Rosalie and Alice Cullen better

kadabug87 says:

akasha is stronger definately but rosalie and alice are my favorite

sara(h) says:

i dont now but maybe the male is stronger

Stacey says:

Now Akasha kicks major ass, but remember it is Alice that rips James head off in Twilight. And Rosalie isnt exactly a wallflower. I think if pushed to the breaking point the sisters Cullen might one up the Queen. And with mama bear Esme on their side Akasha doesnt stand a chance.

Amazon.com Review
Did you ever wonder where all those mischievous vampires roaming the globe in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles came from? In this, the third book in the series, we find out. That raucous rock-star vampire Lestat interrupts the 6,000-year slumber of the mama of all bloodsuckers, Akasha, Queen of the Damned.

Akasha was once the queen of the Nile (she has a bit in common with the Egyptian goddess Isis), and it's unwise to rile her now that she's had 60 centuries of practice being undead. She is so peeved about male violence that she might just have to kill most of them. And she has her eye on handsome Lestat with other ideas as well.

Anne Rice has a romance that was totally missing from Twilight... not the romance between Akasha and Lestat persay but the entire culture, the entire world... the whole mythology is romantic. If I wanted emo from a vampire I'd just read bad poetry on livejournal.

I liked reading the twilight series, but I actually prefer Anne Rice. I really prefered how she made a book for a few of the vampires, giving them a backstory and getting to really know who vampires, like lestat and armand really were. Yeah, Stephanie did this too, but it would of been nice to read about them some more(like alice :D:D:D) That would of totally been awsome. But since I read Anne Rice's books best, I really think she's the best. It just seems more realistic to me and the stories behing claudia and louis' relationship is awsome, but tragic...

Vampires have become less and less malevolent as they become romantic heroic figures. They are more like humans with superpowers and not the living dead. I remember a movie called "Old Dracula" where the vampire played by the late great actor David Niven had his butler use a stop watch when biting his victim. This protected them from becoming vampires or being killed.

I definitely like Anne Rice's works better, but was pretty confused when she started morphing from vampires to religious fiction. In any case, it was exciting recently to hear that she's releasing a video book soon and it will be from some of her older stuff.

Queen of the Damned was my favorite Anne Rice book and Eclipse is my favorite Stephanie Meyer book, but I also was really enthralled with Breaking Dawn and New Moon with all the Native folk lore. Stephanie Meyer has surely won me over.

Great job on your lens. Interesting the way you compare the authors' work. I enjoy both authors for what they are and how each of them writes. The Twilight Saga is definitely more appealing to the younger crowd.

This is great fun! I am very familiar with Anne Rice's vampires, but you've made a great case for the more adult and erotic versions of vampires. Personally I love them all!!
