Steps to take after you have removed PC infection

Install the Firefox browser and harden it by installing 2 plug-ins:

WOT Plug-in - Web of Trust
NoScript Plug-in

This browser and two plug-ins safeguard your internet browsing experience and reduce significantly your chance of getting a PC infection.

See my lens How to avoid computer viruses for more explanations on the Firefox browser, WOT and NoScript.

WOT creates a black and red shield skin that warns and protects you once you've entered a malicious site and gives you the opportunity to not proceed. The WOT icon sites at the top left of your Firefox Browser, left of the url address.

WOT icon is a round green circle with a Sun in the top left.

NoScript disables scripts. Some scripts are quite malicious. You'll find it a bit of a nuisance at first, but after a few days you'll realize how much it is protecting your PC. Once the NoScript Plug-in is installed it will have an icon that sits at the bottom right of your Firefox Browser.

If you enter a site and WOT is green and says all is clear, then click on the NoScript icon (it has an S with a diagonal slash through it) and a menu will come up. Pick 'allow scripts for this page'. You can also program NoScripts to always automatically allow scripts on sites you trust.

Buy Malwarebytes - it does everything. You don't need any other anti-viral, anti-spyware, anti-adware, anti anything. It does it all!

With these three additions to your PC arsenal you will limit your PC infections by 99%.

How to Show Hidden Systems Files and Hidden Files and Folders

You need to open these hidden system files and folders up so that your anti-virus or anti-malware program can access them and destroy the viruses, trojans and worms that are in these hidden files. Once unticked you can leave these files unticked. I realize they are system protected files, but they must be opened up if you have a resistant pc infection.

Set System and Hidden files and folders to show:

Vista:

* Click the (Vista Icon) and click on Computer.
* Click Organize and click on Folder and Search Options.
* Click on the View tab.
* Un-check the Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended) box.
* Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
* If you see a warning message, click Yes.
* Click Apply.
* Click OK.

XP:

* Right-Click My Computer choose Explore, click on Tools, Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Place a tick next to Display contents of System folders, (answer OK to warnings)
* Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
* If you see a warning message, click Yes.
* Click Apply.
* Click OK.

98/2000/ME:

* Double-click the My Computer icon
* Click on the View menu, click Folder Options
* Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show all files.
* If you see a warning message, click Yes.
* Click Apply.
* Click OK.

Steps to Remove Resistant PC Infections - Disable System Restore

07/09/09

System Restore is a protected folder on your PC.

Why you should disable System Restore if you have a Resistant PC Infection ...

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file on your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Disable System Restore to prevent re-infection

Vista:

* Click the (Vista Icon) and right click on Computer and select Properties.
* Click on System Protection (click OK if you are prompted with a warning).
* Un-check all of the boxes in the list of Available Disks for Automatic Restore Points.
* Click Apply.
* Click OK.

WinXP:

* Click the Start button.
* Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
* On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.

WinME:

* Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
* Double-click the System icon.
* If the System icon is not visible, click View all Control Panel options to display it.
* On the Performance tab, click File System.
* On the Troubleshooting tab check Disable System Restore.
* Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

MalwareBytes is Best of Breed

Final Step:

Download and run Malwarebytes as follows

Download Malwarebytes.

* Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* Make sure a check-mark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.(The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.)
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Please Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and if asked to restart the computer please do so immediately.

If malware recycles then disable your Anti-virus Software and run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode. Once done restart in Normal Mode and turn your Anti-virus Software back on.

Reset System Restore back on.

MBAM the total package

A few months ago, I found Malwarebytes and was extremely please at how well it worked at finding malware. In fact, in comparing it to Trojan Remover, which removes Trojans, MBAM comes up with flying colors. Why, because it gets rid of all the Trojans it finds. I'd test it out, scan with Malwarebytes, eliminate the trojans it found and then run Trojan Remover next and viola, no more trojans. So why buy Trojan Remover that just removes trojans, when Marlwarebytes removes trojans, worms, viruses, and spyware!

In fact, I run Malwarebytes more often than my anti-virus program, because I find its success rate much higher. Malwarebytes is light weight and won't bog your system down.

MBAM comes in either the free version or the full version. The Malwarebytes site mentions that the full version has the following added features:

"The Real-time Protection Module uses our advanced heuristic scanning technology which monitors your system to keep it safe and secure. In addition, we have implemented a threats center, which will allow you to keep up to date with the latest malware threats. Activating the full version unlocks real-time protection, scheduled scanning, and scheduled updating."

The free version has met my needs but I still manage to download problems, well, maybe it's my husband. But since I can successfully handle getting rid of any trojans and other malware, the free version is fine for me. Still for only $24.95 US, the added benefit of the full version of Malwarebytes running on a computer in the background may be a good way to get some peace of mind, especially if you're not a computer geek!

Download Malwarebytes now for total protection and peace of mind.
