What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by mass of fine silver and 7.5% by mass of other metals, usually copper. This means that the sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925.

Fine silver (99.9% pure) is too soft for producing functional objects; therefore, the silver is traditionally alloyed with copper to give it strength while preserving the ductility and prized beauty of the precious metal. Other metals are sometimes used to replace the copper with the intent of improving various properties of the basic sterling alloy. The replacement metals that have been used include germanium, zinc and platinum.

What Is Art Nouveau?

Art Nouveau was at its height between 1880 -1910. It attempted to bring down the barriers between the "fine arts" and "applied arts"-- now the design of all objects, no matter how insignificant, was important.

The main characteristics of the style was the use of sinuous curved lines, together with the asymmetrical arrangement of forms and patterns. Forms most popular with Art Nouveau designers were characterized by flowing curves-- grasses, lilies, vines, etc. Other, more unusual natural forms, included peacock feathers, butterflies, and insects.

The works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha are very typical of the Art Nouveau style.

Amy Brown was born in Bellingham, Washington in1972. Although she has no formal art training she did begin drawing at a young age.

She has been painting faeries since 1992. It started while working at a small gallery. She was asked to paint "a Faery or something" to fill an empty space-- so she did. The piece sold 3 days later. So she painted another and it also quickly sold. She started focusing solely on fairies and her career took off! She has illustrated many books and her intriguing fairies, which sometimes show an influence of goth or manga, appear on all sorts of things! She has become so popular that she is often referred to as The Fairy Artist.
