Music to Calm NICU Babies and Parents
Music in the NICU
Music is one of the many things that NICU Parents can used to help their premature babies and sick newborns. We brought in music and her own CD player for my daughter to listen to when she was in the NICU in 2002. It was something that I had intuitively done to help my daughter in her healing process, believing that the music would calm and comfort her.Since my daughter was in the NICU in 2002, music has been incorporated as a healing modality and as music therapy for NICU babies. Research has shown that music is a way to positively alter the environment of NICU premature babies and sick newborns.
Some of the desirable effects of music on NICU babies include: aiding in brain and language development, conveying a sense of security (comfort), improving oxygen levels, helping babies to sleep, decreasing pain, increasing weight gain and shortening the duration of hospital stays.
