Who is St. Jude Thaddeus?
The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the twelve. They are described by St. Matthew (13:55) as the "brethren" of Jesus, probably cousins. The Hebrew word for "brethren" indicates a blood relationship. His mother, Mary, was a cousin of the Blessed Mother.
The Jewish people, proud of their lineage, kept exact records of their ancestors, and we see that St. Jude's father, Cleophas, was the brother of St. Joseph. St. Jude's mother, Mary of Cleophas, was a cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary: their mothers were sisters.
St. Jude was a tireless worker--he tried--he dared to try the impossible; and he was successful. Steadfastly pure in body and soul, Jude gave of himself not only in life but in death as well.
Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them.

The Ministry of St. Jude

After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude traveled throughout Mesopotamia, Libya, and Persia with St. Simon preaching and converting many to Christianity. For many years, St. Jude made missionary journeys, preaching, dispensing the Sacraments throughout Mesopotamia, Armenia, and even southern Russia.
Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and his feast day is October 28.
Saint Jude is known mainly as the author of the New Testament Epistle of Jude. This letter was probably written before the fall of Jerusalem, between the years of 62 and 65. In his letter Jude denounces the heresies of that early time and warns the Christians against the seduction of false teaching.
(Feast Day for St. Jude is October 28, 2009)

A Prayer to St. Jude Thaddeus for Hope

God of hope, come to me. Help me to know that your hope is alive in me as I offer kindness, forgiveness, and tenderness to others.
I seek the inner calm that comes from trusting in you. Give me the courage to be aware of your healing presence.
May I trust that St. Jude walks with me in times of trouble, and intercedes on my behalf.
St. Jude, fill my heart with hope.
Amen.

A Prayer to St. Jude

Most holy apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of.
Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of.
Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever.
I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.
Amen.

- What a lovely way to pay homage to a saint. I have asked God to allow him to assist me on several occasions. My personal favorite is Padre Pio passed away in 1964. His intervention has been tremendous.
This is a beautiful lens. I'll have to make one for Padre Pio someday soon.
