Trading Stocks for Beginners

Learning to trade stocks for yourself is an exciting journey which can result in you taking control of your financial future and in some cases turning a greater profit on your investment than a professional could return for you. There are many resources on the web than can help you learn the stock market and help you learn and practice the art of trading stocks. In this article I hope to point you in the right direction to get you on your way to using the stock market to make money.

A starting point for people to learn about trading stocks

Trading stocks for yourself, like most activities that require a relatively large amount of skill and knowledge, has become much easier with the explosion of the world wide web. There is an abundance of tools online that can help you to learn and to make trading decisions once you've decided to dive in. A lot of the tools and knowledge found on the web are free, other tools and data come at a fee.

What is stock?

Selling stock is a means by which a company raises capital to fund its operations. A share is one piece of that stock. There are two main ways to make money off of owning shares of stock:

  1. By sale after appreciation of the share(s)

  2. By dividend, which is a regular payout the company pays to holders of their stock.

Stock Trading Resources

There is more than enough stuff on the web to keep you busy learning and experimenting for the first year or more, depending on how much time you devote to learning.

Free Resources
  • OptionsXpress.com

OptionsXpress.com is an online broker, however it is free to sign up with them and they offer a plethora of tools and educational resources. They also offer a stock/option trading simulator which strongly mimics the interface you would be using if you were trading with them for real.

  • Investopedia.com

One of the best free online resources to learn about trading stocks is Investopedia.com. There you can find tutorials, articles, definitions of terms used in trading and more. They even provide a free simulator so you can practice trading without having to risk real money.

  • Bloomberg.com

Bloomberg provides a lot of free news and tools for the stock market. One of the tools I use from Bloomberg is the Market Monitor desktop tool. It lets you add different stocks into it and you will be alerted about news about the companies that you enter.

You can make money but you can lose money too

Trading stocks can be a quick way to make or lose money. Real money should not be risked until you have spent a lot of time reading and practicing the art and science of trading stocks.

Beware of scams!

There are a million get rich scams on the internet and offline as well. It's no surprise that get rich quick type scams exist as well that are related to the stock market. You should always be very cautious whenever someone claims they know a secret of how to make you rich easily.

Summary

With a little bit of brains and a lot of dedication you can learn to trade stocks for yourself. There is an abundance of info and tools on the web to help and trading through online brokers is easy.
