Tips To Start A Photography Business In The Stock Photography Niche

The Stock Photography niche industry has experienced and is experiencing the most tumultuous (how's that for 'hoity-toity') disruptions and change than any other photography niche. For many photographers, that is grim news. For other photographers (usually the 'newbies' photographers) this is great news.

The grim photographers will tell you that the industry is now 'destroyed' because the 'bottom' has fallen out in the prices! They also point to how access to the photo-buyers no longer involves the 'long range campaigns' of the stock photographer. The 'value' of their 'hard earned' long-term relationship with stock photo buyers has diminished. Access is now 'just a click or two away!' To make matters worse, some of the grim photographers (re: fearful and intolerant of change) refuse to establish a 'web presence.'

'Newbies' aren't grim because they haven't been around long enough to know that there is 'major' change happening in the stock photography niche. Many figure, what the heck, I have a digital camera, I can 'point' it and shoot it as well as anyone else, I can then sell my photo online or 'wherever!'

The Stock Photography Niche Is Ready And Growing For Those Who Understand The Results Of The Stock Photography Market

Yes, things have really changed in the stock photography industry - but, so has the auto industry, the telephone industry, and the television industry, just to name a few. If you know what the changes are, or, more importantly, know the results of the changes, you're primed for success.

Digital Technology - that is a major change in this industry. Photographers that want to benefit and profit from the changes must understand that - digital - IS - the way of the stock photography niche. The technology drastically and cost-effectively reduces the costs of 'participating' in this niche successfully.

If you're an experienced stock photographer, there are (only!) a few things you may need to re-learn. Don't fret - it's accessible and learnable.

If you're new to stock photography, you're at a perfect point. Most of the disruptive changes are clearing up and settling. Most of the process and procedures are established and in place (this is an area that some experienced photographers have trouble with the 'changes') and they're accessible.

An example of a good result of the changes in stock photography is the ease of working with photo-buyers and stock agencies. Companies have been developed that provide multiple services: the photographer can handle the marketing, sales and delivery themselves or the company handles those tasks for a very small fee. Also, the better companies make it easier and simpler to work with agencies - something only dreamed of before the internet!

Manage Change: Research The Stock Photography Niche Business

I have 3 good steps to find out how you can successfully benefit from knowing the changes of the stock photography market:

  1. Do the research yourself: Do searches for "stock photography niche' "stock photography business" "changes in stock photography" etc. Of course, you'll get quite a bit of information to research. But, from my experiences, there is very valuable information that is very accessible and very helpful. Yes, it is like the proverbial 'needle-in-a-haystack.' But, the 'needles' are gold and worth finding!

  2. Spend quality time in online forums and various discussion groups. Upside - there is great, current and profitable information in the online forums. Downside - in some of the forums there are a lot of very angry stock photographers that refuse to acknowledge that 'things have changed.'

  3. And, of course, on the internet an informative ebook is just a click away! I highly recommend this Stock Photography Niche Guide. This informative and current guide will show you:

    1. How To Start A Stock Photography Business - you'll learn what you need to do to begin, to continue, or to revamp in stock photography today.

    2. The value of 'digital.' Many long-time stock photographers claim that they will never stop shooting with film. While that's fine, the reality is overwhelming - digital stock photography 'is the way of the world.' Learn the criteria your next digital camera should meet for your work to be better accepted among stock photo buyers.

    3. Find your 'stock photography' market - you'll learn where and how to find photo buyers the easy way; how to let them know about your stock photography; how to get them to take a look at your work; and how to cultivate their continued interests in you, as the dependable stock photographer and in your work.

    4. Strategies and methods to market you stock photos and suggestions how to do it yourself or work through an agency, instead. Strategies and methods include:

      1. Marketing to agencies; knowing that they expect; how they operate; how to work with agencies online; etc.

      2. How to effectively market and manage your stock photography website; why you need one; how to market with your website; how to get your own agency or company "web presence/space" if you don't want to create and manage a website yourself.

      3. How to scan your non-digital images. How to clean up and improve your scans. How your scanned images should be handled to meet the needs of most markets.

  1. And much more

The New 'Reality' Of The Stock Photography Niche Is 'Ease'

In reality, the stock photography world has gotten so much easier for the stock photography niche photographer, especially the stock photographer who markets their own work.

Even working with agencies has become easier.

Don't miss out. Do your research.
