Stonehenge, UK

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 8 miles north of Salisbury. Stonehenge is made up of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones.

It is believed by archaeologists that the standing stones and the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch have been dated to about 3000 BC. The site is a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument and visitors must stay behind a roped area surrounding the stones.  The possibility of vandalism and, more importantly, subsidance of the underlying foundation is reduced by crowd control.

Stonehenge itself is owned and managed by English Heritage; however, the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.  There is a fee to enter or the option to buy an English Heritage annual pass.

Mystic or Manpower?

Just how did Stonehenge happen?

There are many different theories about how Stonehenge was created and why.

Theories range from alien visitors to Druids to Satan. The scientific examination ruled out the Druid, due to the existance of the henge before the Druid culture. The idea that it was created as a Roman temple (possibly dedicated to Caelus)was also ruled out by the carbon testing.

The more scientific explanations include the use of Stonehenge as a solar calendar (the solstice shines through the stones every year). This idea is often questioned as how the ancient civilization had the mathematics to construct such a precise monument.

Some theories believe that it was built "just because" as a show of power, wealth, status, or property division.

Another, more widely accepted theory, compares Stonehenge to the religous practices during the same time in Egypt. In Egypt, the dead were taken from the East (sun rise) to the West (sunset) and laid in monuments of stone. The same may have been true for the ancient civilizations in England. The dead were taken from the wooden homes to the stone monument (Stonehenge) during the funeral procession.

Building Stonehenge - This Man can Move Anything

Wally Wallington has demonstrated that he can lift a Stonehenge-sized pillar weighing 22000 lbs and moved a barn over 300 ft. What makes this so special is that he does it using only himself, gravity, and his incredible ingenuity. www.theforgottentechnology.com
